Why You Can’t Have A Period While Pregnant
It is possible to have spotting during pregnancy, but any bleeding you may have while you’re pregnant is not actually a period. A true period happens when the uterine lining sheds at the end of a menstrual cycle. When an egg goes unfertilized, levels of the hormones that control the egg’s release drop and cause your uterine lining, which has thickened in the first half of your cycle as it awaited a fertilized egg, to slough off and shed in what we refer to as a period.
If you’re pregnant, an egg has been fertilized and implanted in the wall of the uterus. Pregnancy hormones tell your body to maintain the uterine lining, and since it’s not shedding, you no longer have a period. A missed period is why one of the earliest signs of pregnancy .

Why You Might Experience A Period During Your First Trimester
Though people stop getting their period during pregnancy, its possible that they may still experience some bleeding. This bleeding does not necessarily indicate an underlying issue, but its important to understand the cause of it and whether its time to see a health care provider.
Bleeding tends to occur more often during the first trimester of pregnancy than the second or third. Estimates suggest that about 25 to 30 percent of pregnant people experience spotting at some point during their first trimester. There are a number of reasons for this bleeding.
Implantation bleeding: This refers to the light spotting that occurs about 10 to 14 days after conception, around the time when your period is due. Many people havent yet taken a pregnancy test at this point, so its easy to mistake the spotting for a period. This bleeding is lighter than a normal period, however, and only lasts for a couple of days. It occurs due to the implantation of the fertilized egg into the uterine lining.
Cervical changes: Spotting can occur shortly after you get pregnant due to cervical changes, and particularly after having sexual intercourse. As long as no infection is present, theres no need to be concerned about this.
Other causes: Heavier bleeding that more closely resembles a period during the first trimester of pregnancy can indicate something more serious, including:

How To Distinguish Implantation Bleeding
Implantation bleeding differs from a normal period in that it is a smaller amount of blood loss than a normal period. It may be just some spotting, and should not be enough to fill several tampons. The colour is often dark brown or light pink rather than the bright red blood of a normal period, and there are no clots. The bleeding shouldnt last a long time, perhaps only a few hours, although it could be up to a week.
If your periods are regular, implantation bleeding happens a few days earlier than when a normal period is due, so it is often mistaken for an early period. There may be a slight abdominal cramp that occurs when the egg attaches onto the womb, but this cramping is generally faint and does not increase in strength over time. If you have severe pain associated with the light bleed, then it is unlikely that its due to implantation bleeding. Other signs of early pregnancy can occur with implantation bleeds, which include mood swings, breast tenderness and oily skin.
When Should You Seek Help About Ovulating Without Periods
Whilst ovulation without a period is usually no cause for concern, and can indicate a hormonal imbalance, it may also be caused by an underlying medical condition. You should consult your doctor if:
- You have not had a period for three or more months, and are not on any form of birth control.
- You have been trying to conceive for a year with no success, and are under the age of 35, or if you have been trying to conceive for six months, and are aged 35 or over.

Many moms-to-be experience bleeding while they are pregnant. In fact, the American Pregnancy Association says studies show that 20-30 percent of women experience some degree of bleeding during early pregnancy. But how do you know how much bleeding is normal and when its a cause for concern? It depends on how far along you are, and how severe the bleeding is.
First, know how to tell spotting from bleeding.
Spotting is very light bleeding. It is common in the first trimester. The blood will be light brown or pink, similar to what you see at the end of a period.
Bleeding is heavier. The blood is bright red and is more like the bleeding you experience when having your period.
If youre thinking about it, call your doctor.

In later pregnancy ultrasound scanning is used to look more closely at the anatomy and organs of the developing baby. This is usually done between 18 21 weeks.
Causes Of Bleeding During The First Three Months Of Pregnancy
Weve already mentioned two reasons why you might bleed when youre pregnant, which are not caused for concern. There are, however, four other possible reasons all of which are reasons to get quick medical help. The first is an infection, and the second, a possible miscarriage. If treated properly, there are no other complications from an infection and the miscarriage is stopped, most women go on to have normal pregnancies and healthy babies.
Bleeding, especially heavy bleeding is a sign that something is wrong like when the embryo implants itself outside the womb this is known as an ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancies are quite rare and develop between the 4th and 12th weeks of pregnancy.4 An even more rare cause of vaginal bleeding in pregnancy is if a fertilised egg doesnt properly develop into a separate embryo with a placenta. This is known as a molar pregnancy. The baby will not survive and the pregnancy either ends in a miscarriage or must be terminated.5

Can You Get Pregnant If You Have Sex During Your Period
Can you get pregnant if you have sex while you are in your period?
Yes its possible to get pregnant if you have unprotected sex during your period. However, its less common for this to happen.
Heres the deal: A woman is most likely to get pregnant from sex that happens just before and during ovulation . Ovulation happens in the middle of the time you get periods, usually about 14 days before your period starts. Its more likely that you could become pregnant from sex during your period if you have a shorter menstrual cycle.
All of this might sound really complicated, especially if you arent sure how long your menstrual cycle is, or when youre ovulating. During the first few years that you have a period, its pretty typical for your menstrual cycle to be irregular which makes this stuff even harder to keep track of. But if you use a birth control method like condoms or the pill every time you have sex, your chances of getting pregnant are really really low, whether youre on your period or not.

Finding Out The Cause Of Bleeding In Pregnancy
To work out what is causing the bleeding, you may need to have a vaginal or pelvic examination, an ultrasound scan or blood tests to check your hormone levels.
Your doctor will also ask you about other symptoms, such as cramp, pain and dizziness. Sometimes it might not be possible to find out what caused the bleeding.
If your symptoms are not severe and your baby is not due for a while, youâll be monitored and, in some cases, kept in hospital for observation.
How long you need to stay in hospital depends on the cause of the bleeding and how many weeks pregnant you are.
Being in hospital allows staff to keep an eye on you and your baby, so they can act quickly if there are further problems.

Why You May Experience Bleeding While Pregnant
There are many reasons why you may experience bleeding while pregnant, with causes ranging from minor to urgent. Bleeding very early on may occur when the pregnancy implants in the uterus, says Kate White, MD, MPH, OB/GYN, author of Your Guide to Miscarriage and Pregnancy Loss. Known as implantation bleeding, this can often seem very similar to a period, especially due to the timing. This bleeding may be lighter than a period but often occurs around the same time that you would menstruate, approximately 10 to 14 days after conception, says Dr. Roskin.

When Should I Call My Doctor About A New Pregnancy
If youve missed your period and gotten a positive pregnancy test, your next step will be to call your healthcare provider for your first appointment. While scheduling, your provider may ask if you have already started taking a prenatal vitamin containing folic acid. Prenatal vitamins are important in early pregnancy because they help in the development of the fetal neural tube. The neural tube will become your babys brain and spine. Many healthcare providers recommend that anyone who could become pregnant take folic acid at all times.
If youre planning a pregnancy, a preconception appointment with your healthcare provider is a good place to start. A preconception appointment is especially important if you take medication for a chronic illness or have other medical conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure or lupus.
During this appointment, your provider will discuss any current medical conditions, as well as your general health before pregnancy. This appointment is meant to get you into the best place for a new pregnancy.
