What Is The Menstrual Cycle

The menstrual cycle is what your body goes through to get ready for pregnancy. This cycle is the time from the first day of your period up to the day before the start of your next period.

Ovulation usually happens during the second half of the cycle. This is when an egg is released from one of your ovaries. To get pregnant, the egg needs to be fertilised by the sperm.

Ovulation doesnt happen every month for every woman. There are some conditions that may interfere with ovulation, such as endometriosis and polycystic ovarian syndrome . If you are not getting a monthly period and are trying to get pregnant, speak to your doctor.

How To Calculate The Menstrual Cycle

Start with figuring out the days in your average cycle. To calculate your menstrual cycle, count the days between your last few periods. Begin counting on the first day of your period to the day before your next period.Do this for a few cycles, and add up the total number of days, dividing it by the number of cycles. That gives you the average number of days in your menstrual cycle.Besides this basic tracking, there are some other data points that you could consider that may help gauge irregularities and misses. Some of these include heavy flow, change in mood and energy levels, or a change in appetite. Keeping these details helps you closely monitor your health.

Causes Of A Long Cycle

The later into their cycle a person ovulates, the later their period will be. A long cycle may mean that a person ovulated very late, or did not ovulate at all.

According to the OWH , specific causes for a long menstrual cycle include:

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome : Sometimes, late ovulation is a sign of PCOS. Other symptoms of PCOS include irregular periods, unusual or excessive body hair growth, unexplained weight gain, and insulin resistance.
  • Hyperthyroidism: When the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone, it can cause late or missed periods. The OWH list other hyperthyroidism symptoms as feelings of nervousness, unexplained weight loss, a rapid heartbeat, and trouble sleeping.

A person with these symptoms should speak to their doctor. If a person has not had their period, they should also consider whether they might be pregnant.

How Do I Count The Days Of My Menstrual Cycle Do I Start Counting The Day I Start Bleeding Or When I Finish

How To Get Ovulation Without Going To Fertility Clinic?

Your cycle begins on the first day you have regular bleeding. Spotting doesnt count. For example, Cycle Day 1 is the first day of your period Cycle Day 2 is the second day of your period, Cycle Day 3 is the third day of your menstrual flow, and so forth.

As an example, create sample menstrual calendar for the month of January. Lets say you had spotting on January 3rd, but you didnt have regular bleeding until the next day. The first day of your menstrual period would be January 4th. The first day of your period is also called Cycle Day 1.

Now, create sample menstrual calendar for the month of February. Lets pretend your period started on the 2nd. In January, your period started on Jan. 4th and in February it started on the 2nd.

When your health care provider asks you: When was your last period? The answer is the date of the first day of your last period . Ex.= February 2nd.

To figure out how long your cycle is, start at cycle day 1 of your last menstrual cycle and begin counting . The length= the last cycle day before you started bleeding again. For example According to the January and February calendars, the cycle length would be 30 days, meaning your period comes on average, every 30 days. However, keep in mind that your cycle may vary in length.

Q How To Find The Safest Days To Have Sex Based On The Period Calculator To Avoid Pregnancy

Calculating the safe period days is very simple. You have to fill in the dates of your last period, duration of your period and the duration of the menstrual cycle. And your data is ready for the next months! The dates with white spaces in the calendar are the safe day. Generally, one to seven days of the menstrual period, and the days after ovulation are considered safe or infertile. However, remember that the calculator is purely based on the details you give, and can be inaccurate if the data is incorrect.

How Is It Done

First, chart the length of your menstrual cycle, starting with the first day of your menstrual period as Day 1 and doing so continually until your next period starts again, after which you start counting for a new menstrual cycle.

For this method to be reliable, you need at least four to six menstrual cycles to be able to predict when you are most fertile in your ovulation calendar. Know the duration of your cycles, and take note of the shortest and longest cycles.

How do you know when is the start of your fertile window, and when does it end?

Hereâs a little math:

Note your shortest cycle , and subtract 18 from the total number of days .

If the first day of your current menstrual period is May 4, add 9 days , and this will give you the approximate first fertile day in your ovulation calendar.

To know the last fertile day in your ovulation calendar, take your longest cycle and subtract 11 from the total number of days . From May 4, add 19 days to give you the approximate last fertile day .

Whether conceiving or avoiding pregnancy, look out between these fertile dates to either have intercourse or avoid doing so.

How Long Does The Luteal Phase Need To Be To Get Pregnant

Your luteal phase length should be 12 to 16 days. It begins after ovulation and ends with the onset of your next period. During this time, progesterone rises and signals the growth and thickening of your uterine lining where the fertilized egg will implant itself and develop into a baby. If your luteal phase is shorter than 10 days, the fertilized egg will not be able to attach, and you will experience an early miscarriage.

For Women With Irregular Cycles

Keep in mind that women with irregular cycles may not be able to predict when ovulation happens because the length of their cycle varies month to month. It is possible for some women with irregular cycles to ovulate right after their period, though this is uncommon.

Calculating The Fertile Days If I Am Regular

How to Count your Menstrual Cycle

If your menstrual cycle is regular and always occurs between 28 and 30 days, to calculate your fertile days you only have to count 14 days from the first day of your period.

For example, if your period starts on the 16th the calculation would be:

16 + 14 = 30. It is likely that you will ovulate on the 30th of that month.

Once the egg is released, it will only be alive in the body for 24 to 48 hours, while sperm can stay alive for up to 72 hours. Therefore, if you are not trying for a baby it is important to use condoms between day 11 and 16 of your menstrual cycle. This way you will avoid an unwanted pregnancy.

Practical Example Of The Use Of Conception Date Calculator

Let’s take Anne. She is 11 weeks pregnant, and still doesn’t know her conception day. The first day of her last period was 11 June 2018, and typically, her cycle lasts for 31 days . As mentioned before, we can assume that her ovulation began around 17 days after her LMP, on 28 June 2018.

11th June 2018 + 17 days = 28th June 2018

She conceived around her ovulation date , on 28 June 2018. However, instead of all this counting, she used our pregnancy conception calculator.

Next up is Maggie. She just came back from the doctor, who told her that the due date is on 19 September 2019. Now, she has one question: ‘what day did I conceive?’.

19th September 2019 – 266 days = 26th January 2019

You don’t have to do the calculations by hand! Just put the numbers into our conception date calculator based on the due date. It can also work as a pregnancy week calculator, giving you an estimated week of pregnancy and the first day of your last period.

Now, to ensure that both the mother and child are healthy during and after pregnancy, both Anne and Maggie should control their pregnancy weight gain.

Can I Use My Menstrual Cycle To Predict My Due Date

Can I get pregnant on 21 days of my period? Where do I ...

Yes. You can work out how far along your pregnancy is by counting from the first day of your last period.

This can be confusing because you probably didnt get pregnant until around 2 weeks later, after you ovulated. Even if do you know the date you got pregnant, this is counted as day 14 of your pregnancy , not day 1.

Your pregnancy is calculated from your last menstrual period because every time you have a period this is the bodys way of getting ready for pregnancy. It also gives healthcare professionals a standard to follow because its very difficult to know exactly when the sperm fertilised the egg.

If your period is irregular or if youve recently been on the pill it will be harder to try and work out your due date.

The most accurate way to work out your due date is to have an ultrasound scan when youre around 11 to 14 weeks pregnant. This is used to see how for along you are and check your babys development.

If You Dont Have A 28

But not everyone has a 28-day menstrual cycle, which is quite normal. Even if they do, they may not ovulate on the 14th day.

Scientist Allen Wilcox did a study with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences on 696 menstrual cycles. He found that among the 69 women with 28-day cycle, only about 7 women ovulated 14 days before their next period. Some ovulated 19 days before their period, and some just 7 days prior .

The Wilcox study also found that more than 70% women are in their fertile window before day 10 or after day 17.1

This can be owing to the length of your period. For instance, if it ends by day 3, it is possible that hormonal changes in your body that trigger ovulation to occur on day 10. There can be other physiological causes, like lack of sex hormones or their delayed release. There can be psychological causes like stress too.

Understanding The Ovulation Calendar

Taking the first day of your period as day 1, mark day 7 to day 20 as fertile phase. If day 7 also starts your fertile window, you will notice the following signs:

Day

If it starts on day 8, the signs will start showing a day later. But the ovulation calculator gives you a rather broad spectrum. To hit closer to home, look out for the physical and psychological changes.

What Happens After Your Period Ends

The complete shedding of the unfertilised female egg and your uterine lining symbolises the end of your period. After your menstrual cycle ends, the female genitals begin to prepare for another menstrual cycle. Your body begins to shift towards your most fertile period, where the chances of pregnancy are high.

How Do I Calculate My Fertility Window

How do you calculate your monthly cycle? – Dr. Phani Madhuri
  • Calculate your ovulation day. Take your average cycle duration, subtract 14 days from this value, and add the remaining amount of days to the date your last period began.
  • Sperm can survive inside a woman’s body for 7 days, so subtract 7 days from your ovulation day. This is when your fertile window begins.
  • As the egg can only survive one day outside of the ovaries, add 1 day to your ovulation day. This is the end of your fertile window.
  • This time between these two dates is your fertile window.
  • Check your results, as well as find them for the next 3 months, with the Omni Ovulation Calculator.
