How Does Fertility Differ With The Pill

Birth control pills aim to prevent unintended pregnancy. The pill prevents pregnancy by releasing synthetic hormones that stop ovulation from occurring and the uterus lining from thickening.

So, even if the ovaries do release an egg, a fertilized egg would be unable to implant in the wall of the uterus. The pill also thickens cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to reach an egg.

According to the CDC , the birth control pill is more than 99% effective with perfect use but only 91% effective with typical use. This means that around 9 out of 100 women would become pregnant in a year of taking the pill with typical use.

What Does Fertility Actually Mean

Fertility is your ability to conceive children. Around 80% of partners will get pregnant within a year if they have regular sex without contraception.

Both male and female fertility declines gradually with age. A womans fertility declines significantly from about the age of 37. Male fertility depends more on sperm count.

What Is The Basal Body Temperature Method Of Determining Fertility

HOW TO CALCULATE YOUR OVULATION PERIOD â I.A.S Wellness Centre

Basal body temperature is your temperature at rest as soon as you awake in the morning. A womanâs basal body temperature rises slightly with ovulation. So by recording this temperature daily for several months, youâll be able to predict your most fertile days.

Basal body temperature differs slightly from woman to woman. Anywhere from 96 to 98 degrees Fahrenheit orally is average before ovulation. After ovulation most women have an oral temperature between 97 and 99 degrees Fahrenheit. The rise in temperature can be a sudden jump or a gradual climb over a few days.

Usually a womanâs basal body temperature rises by only 0.4 to 0.8 degrees Fahrenheit. To detect this tiny change, women must use a basal body thermometer. These thermometers are very sensitive. Most pharmacies sell them for about $10.

The rise in temperature doesnât show exactly when the egg is released. But almost all women have ovulated within three days after their temperatures spike. Body temperature stays at the higher level until your period starts.

You are most fertile and most likely to get pregnant:

Two to three days before your temperature hits the highest point 12 to 24 hours after ovulation

A manâs sperm can live for up to three days in a womanâs body. The sperm can fertilize an egg at any point during that time. So if you have unprotected sex a few days before ovulation, you could get pregnant.

What Does This Tool Help You Learn

This interactive tool estimates your peak fertility period, also known as your fertile window. This is when you are most likely to get pregnant. Do not use this tool to prevent pregnancy.

In the tool, you will enter the typical length of your menstrual cycle, and you will click on the first day of your last menstrual period.

  • To know how long your cycles are, track the number of days on a calendar for 2 or 3 months or cycles. Your menstrual cycle begins with the day your period starts and ends the day before your next period starts.
  • If you do not know the number of days in your menstrual cycle, you can use 28 days. This is the average length of a menstrual cycle. But if your cycle is longer or shorter than that, or if it is not always the same length, this tool will not predict your fertile window very well.

While Youre On Your Period

As any woman with a calendar and a bunch of best friends will tell you, the amount of days each woman spends menstruating can vary a lot.

Your menstrual flow may start to diminish and lighten in color, or turn brown towards the end of your cycle. It feels and looks like youre still menstruating, but your body is already gearing up for your next fertile time.

If you have sex towards the end of your period, you may actually be getting close to your fertile window, especially if you have a short cycle. Lets take a look at the math.

Say you ovulate early, about six days after your period starts. You have sex on the third day of your period. The sperm have no egg to fertilize, but theyre also in no hurry to die so they hang out, doin what sperm do.

A few days later, while theyre still swimming around, you ovulate and theyre drawn to that egg like a fish to water. One gets through, and there you have it fertilization has occurred as a result of period sex.

Want to know how fertile are you after your period? It could be that you are trying to get pregnant and it is taking longer than you thought. First of all, you should know that you can get pregnant or conceive at any time throughout your menstrual or right after your period if you are having sex without using contraception. You could also get pregnant if you are yet to see your period, during the first period or immediately after your first sexual encounter. You really dont have a safe time in the month to have sexual intercourse without contraception and avoid the risk of conceiving. However, you will be more fertile at certain times throughout your menstrual cycle and this is the period when you are more likely to get pregnant.

BEST TIME TO GET PREGNANT | Most Fertile Days

One of the most common questions among people trying to conceive is: How often should I have sex if Im trying to get pregnant?

The short answer is that it depends on your preferences as a couple, and whether there are any known fertility issues.

Overall, studies have shown that couples who have sex every day or every other day during the fertile window have the highest rates of pregnancy. Also, doctors often recommend sticking to just once a day during the fertile window.

If having sex every day or every other day isnt possible or enjoyable, set a goal to have sex throughout your cycle. This can get you and your partner into a regular sex routine, which can carry you into the fertile window.

Rhythm Method For Natural Family Planning

The rhythm method is also called the calendar rhythm method or just the calendar method. It is a natural family planning technique. You need to keep track of your menstrual history to help you predict when you will ovulate.

The rhythm method has been in use for many years to prevent pregnancy. It can also help you determine when you are likely to ovulate.

To use the rhythm method, you have to keep track of your menstrual cycle for 6-12 months/cycles. You have to note the day your period starts and when it ends. You will subtract 18 from the number of days in your shortest menstrual cycle. The result will represent the first fertile day of your menstrual cycle.

Similarly, subtract 11 from the number of days in the longest. The result will be the last fertile day of your menstrual cycle.

Understanding your menstrual cycle is crucial to defining when you ovulate and calculating when you are most likely to get pregnant.

Women should be aware that if they have an irregular period, it can make the ovulation days difficult to determine. Said Dr. Martinelli. When examining fertility, its important to realize that an egg can survive for about 24 hours after ovulation, and sperm can live inside a womans body for three daysthough sometimes its possible for them to survive for five days.

What Is The Best Time For Conception

There are certain days in a womans menstrual cycle when pregnancy is possible. Pregnancy is technically possible during the five days before ovulation and the day of ovulation. These days are the fertile window of opportunity to conceive. The likelihood of becoming pregnant is dramatically increased if you have intercourse in the three days leading up to and including ovulation.

For women who have a regular menstruation cycle, ovulation occurs around the 14th day of the normal 28-day cycle. The fertile period will therefore take place 3 days before and 3 days after that date.

For example, if your menses come on the date 10th, the fertile period after menstruation will be between the 20th and 26th. The most fertile day will be on the 23rd, as this will be the central date of the fertile period. In some cases can use a fertile period calculator to be able to know the fertile period.

What Is The Cervical Mucus Method Of Determining Fertility

How To Calculate Your Ovulation Accurately, In Order To Avoid Unplanned ...

The cervical mucus method involves being aware of the changes in your cervical mucus throughout the month. The hormones that control the menstrual cycle also change the kind and amount of mucus you have before and during ovulation.

This is when you are most fertile. About four days after the wet days begin the mucus changes again. There will be much less and it becomes sticky and cloudy. You might have a few more dry days before your period returns. Describe changes in your mucus on a calendar. Label the days, Sticky,Dry, or Wet. You are most fertile at the first sign of wetness after your period or a day or two before wetness begins.

The cervical mucus method is less reliable for some women. Women who are breastfeeding, taking hormonal birth control , using feminine hygiene products, have vaginitis or sexually transmitted infections , or have had surgery on the cervix should not rely on this method.

When Is The Best Time To Conceive

To increase your chances of getting pregnant, you need to get your fertile eggs and sperm together as often as possible. Youre the most fertile on the few days each cycle around ovulation, which is when an egg is released.

During an average menstrual cycle, there are 6 days when sex can result in pregnancy. This is often called the fertile window and includes the 5 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself.

Some people get pregnant very quickly but for some people it can take a little longer. We have more information about how long it takes to get pregnant.

How Many Days After Your Period Do You Ovulate

On average, a woman will ovulate about 14 days after her period begins. This is based on a 28-day cycle length and a 14-day luteal phase.

If your cycle is different than the average, youre better off counting backward 14 days from the next projected period. For example, if your cycle is 30 days long, you would ovulate 16 days after your period begins. Likewise, if you have an average 28-day cycle but your luteal phase is 16 days, you would ovulate 12 days after your past period began. This can all get a bit confusing, which is why an ovulation calculator and ovulation tracker is such a great tool. Just plug in your information and let the ovulation calculator determine your most fertile days, which are unique to your body.

When Do Periods Stop

Women usually have periods until menopause. Menopause occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, usually around age 50. Menopause means that a woman is no longer ovulating or having periods and can no longer get pregnant. Like menstruation, menopause can vary from woman to woman and these changes may occur over several years.

For the first few years after menstruation begins, longer cycles are common. A womans cycle tends to shorten and become more regular with age. Most of the time, periods will be in the range of 21 to 35 days apart.

Periods stop during pregnancy, and often while you are breastfeeding. Some women find their periods stop for a time because of long-term illness, low body weight, stress, lots of strenuous exercise and hormone problems. Some medications, such as contraceptives, might stop your period. This can be helpful for some women, especially if their periods are heavy or painful. Sometimes after stopping the pill or other contraceptive, it can take a while for your periods to come back. Periods stop altogether when women reach menopause the average age is 51-52.

The menstrual cycle is the hormonal driven cycle. Day 1 is the first day of your period while day 14 is the approximate day you ovulate and if an egg is not fertilized, hormone levels eventually drop and at about day 25. The egg then begins to dissolve and the cycle begins again with the period at about day 30.

Your Menstrual Cycle And Conception

There are two phases to the menstrual cycle: the follicular phase occurs before ovulation, and the luteal phase occurs after ovulation, says Lauren Sundheimer, M.D., MS, FACOG, an OB-GYN practicing in Orange County, California. Dr. Sundheimer explains that people who have 28-day cycles typically ovulate approximately 14 days after the first day of their period.

Though ovulation tends to occur 14 days prior to the next period, cycle length varies for from person to person and even cycle to cycle. This variation can make predicting ovulation especially tricky if you have irregular cycles since you dont know when your next period will arrive.

The egg thats released during ovulation survives for only 24 hours. Sperm, on the other hand, can survive three to five days in the uterus and fallopian tubes under the right circumstances, says Barbara Stegmann, M.D., a triple board-certified OB-GYN and womens health clinical lead at Organon, a global health care company. So having PIV sex during ovulation or the days beforehand can result in pregnancy since the egg can meet with existing sperm in the reproductive tract.
