Changes To Your Hormone Levels

Young women often spot, or bleed very slightly, when they ovulate . It happens about 10 to 14 days after their period and is usually caused by a temporary drop in levels of the hormone oestrogen. This is quite normal.

As well as reduced oestrogen levels, you may also experience other hormonal imbalances, which are completely harmless. This could be as a result of stress, or a recent change of diet.

Girls who have just started their periods and women going through menopause are more likely to have irregular periods, which can be confused with bleeding between periods.

Your doctor may take a blood test to investigate your hormone levels and will advise you on possible treatments.

Stress Or External Influences

If youre going through a stressful time, it can have an impact on your menstrual cycle. This could include stress from a relationship, work stress, or even difficulty getting to sleep, Dr. Flanagan explains.

Menstrual cycles can also become lighter if you change your eating or exercise habits. Generally speaking, youll experience lighter periods if you exercise too much and eat too little.

Spotting Vs Light Period

The main difference between a scanty period and spotting is seen in the total volume of blood that gets discharged via the vagina. In spotting, vaginal bleeding tends to be minimal, and is in many cases deemed to be insignificant.

On the other hand, bleeding occasioned by menstrual periods could last for between three and five days on average with a notable amount of blood filling the pad.

Your Period Has Slowed Or Stopped

The big question if you’re not getting your period is — how old are you?

The cause of a missing menstrual period varies by age. “To quit having periods at age 25 is a significantly different issue than quitting at age 50,” Loffer says.

For a woman in their 20s or 30s who is sexually active, pregnancy is always a possibility. “Even if a woman thinks she’s protected, that’s not an absolute guarantee,” Loffer says.

On the other hand, women in their 40s or 50s could be in perimenopause — the period surrounding menopause. As your ovaries slow their estrogen production, periods become less frequent. Periods also can get shorter or lighter during perimenopause. Once your periods stop for a full 12 months in a row, you’re in menopause. The average age for menopause is 51.

Another possible cause of missed periods is excessive exercise. Anywhere from 5% to 25% of female athletes work out so hard that they stop getting their periods. Called exercise-induced amenorrhea, this phenomenon is particularly common among ballet dancers and runners. Intense exercise affects the production and regulation of reproductive hormones involved in the menstrual cycle.

For similar reasons, women who have eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa can also stop getting their period. Severely restricting the amount of calories you eat suppresses the release of hormones your body needs for ovulation.

Other possible causes of missed periods include:

Treatments For Periods Every Two Weeks

A woman can approach her periods occurring every two weeks with a variety of treatments, ranging from natural to more conventional ones.

Naturally and effectively treating irregular periods revolves around fixing the hormonal imbalance largely at fault for their occurrences, starting with an optimized diet rich in the plant-based estrogens as well as iron to replenish what’s been lost from the extra bleeding.

For improved results, pair lifestyle changes with alternative medicine proven to work with the body to equilibrate reproductive hormones.

Conventional methods, on the other hand, often involve birth control prescriptions to solve getting a period every other week quickly. However, their usage should first be discussed with a doctor as they are considered more risky than natural measures, and symptoms may prove more hindersome.

Normal Vs Short Period Cycle

A womans menstrual cycle is the time between each period . The days are counted from day one of bleeding from each period to the next. Depending on when a woman ovulates, most cycles last 21 to 35 days. Bleeding times average three to seven days and often shorten as you age. A short period cycle is less than 21 days.

Periods Every Two Weeks Or Two Periods In One Month

When a woman’s period deviates from a fairly regular cycle – for instance, having a period every two weeks or a period twice in one month – it is said to be irregular. Abnormal periods can encompass a broad range of issues concerning a woman’s menstrual cycle, including their frequency.

How Is Abnormal Menstruation Treated

The treatment of abnormal menstruation depends on the underlying cause:

There are other procedural options which can help heavy menstrual bleeding. A five-year contraceptive intrauterine device , called Mirena®, has been approved to help lessen bleeding, and can be as effective as surgical procedures such as endometrial ablation. This is inserted in the doctors office with minimal discomfort, and also offers contraception. Endometrial ablation is another option. It uses heat or electrocautery to destroy the lining of the uterus. It is usually only used when other therapies have been tried and failed. This is because scars from the procedure can make monitoring the uterus more difficult if bleeding persists in the future.

Causes For An Irregular Period

Just started my period||any tips|| bc of my period Im taking a two day break

Dr. Jones:

So what’s abnormal menstruation? And that would be periods that occur less than 21 days or more than 35 days apart. If you miss your periods for more than three cycles, flow that’s much heavier or lighter than usual, periods that last longer than seven days, periods that are accompanied by severe pain, cramping or nausea or bleeding or spotting that happens between your periods or with sex.

You said they came two weeks early. Now, that would be probably less than 21 days, so it means this period was abnormal. But you don’t have to see a doctor for this unless it happens all the time or unless you’re pregnant. So what do you have to see a doctor for?

Youre Spotting A Ton Between Periods

The weird thing about spotting is that its one of those period problems that can actually be totally normalto a certain extent. For example, spotting isnt necessarily worrisome if youve just started a new type of birth control, or are pregnant , Dr. Minkin says. But if nothing in your life has changed and you start spotting between periods, its time to check in with your doctor.

Oftentimes, something thats ultimately pretty harmless is causing this menstrual cycle problem, like a benign uterine or cervical polyp thats prompting you to bleed between periods. But spotting is also a common sign of pelvic inflammatory disease , which happens when sexually transmitted bacteria from infections like chlamydia and gonorrhea spreads to reproductive organs like your uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. In addition, pelvic inflammatory disease can cause issues like fever, strange vaginal discharge that smells bad, and burning when you pee.

If you have PID, your doctor will first address the STI in question with antibiotics, says the CDC, then treat your partner for an STI if necessary. Pelvic inflammatory disease is a leading cause of chronic pelvic pain and infertility in women, so if you suspect you have it, getting quick treatment is of the essence.

Light, irregular or missing periods are classic signs that you may not be ovulating. If your period isnt coming and you are a young, active woman with no baby plans on the horizon, you might be thinking, Why should I care?

Let me tell you ovulation is important for every woman. It is part of any healthy hormonal cycle, a key measure of a womans overall health, and a symbol of our vitality and creativity. Plus, the symptoms we get when we dont ovulate are no fun.

If youre experiencing infertility you might be all too aware that you are not ovulating, but the best way to keep tabs is to track your ovulation signs.

There are 5 ways to track your ovulation signs, including tracking your hormonal symptoms. A great way to do this is with the MyFLO app, which makes it easy and educational.

Think of your hormonal cycle as a chain reactionif one stage does not occur properly, the following stages will not receive the correct triggers. When your ovary releases an egg, the ruptured egg sack produces progesterone. The increase of progesterone in your body encourages the build up and eventual release of the lining of your uterus .

Without proper ovulation, low or no progesterone is produced. Communication between your ovaries, uterus, and pituitary gland goes awry.

If none of these apply to you, both you and your doctor might be baffled as to whats happening and exactly why your period is missing.

It can happen for you, too.

Track Your Menstrual Cycle In A Journal Or App

If you suspect youre bleeding at irregular intervals, its a really good idea to start tracking your cycle in a journal or app. This can help you understand the rhythms of your own body and communicate any concerns to your doctor.

But even if your periods are regular, it’s still good practice to track them so you know when your next one is likely to start and when you’re ovulating. Remember, everybody has their own cycle and flow, and it may be affected by many factorsboth internal and external.

You Have Uterine Scarring

Scarring in the uterus can lead to shorter periods. This is known as Asherman Syndrome, a rare condition that most often occurs in women who have had multiple dilation and curettage procedures, says Dr. Richardson. D& C ‘s are often used to empty the uterus following miscarriage, as an abortion method, and to treat certain gynecological conditions.

Women who have Asherman Syndrome have shorter cycles or amenorrhea because only the areas of the uterus that are not scarred are capable of bleeding. The more scarring that is involved, the less bleeding will occur.

This condition would be diagnosed by hysteroscopy, says Dr. Richardson, and the adhesions would have to be removed surgically in order for your flow to return to normal and to improve your ability to conceive, if desired.

Being Overweight Or Underweight

Many people dont know that maintaining a healthy weight is very important and even more are not aware of the fact that weight can be the reason behind irregular menstruation or even short periods.

If you have a lot of what you call fat cells, this means your body contains too much estrogen. On the contrary, if you are very skinny, it means you dont have sufficient estrogen to keep your menstrual cycle going in a timely manner. Whether too little or too much estrogen, both can lead to inconsistent, short and irregular periods.

To counter this, you can try to eat healthy by taking balanced meals. That can be a little tough initially, but then once you get in the flow, it will be good for you in the long run. Secondly, take out some time to exercise, a minimum of 3 times in a week for at least 30 minutes.

What Is A Very Light Period

A light period is scanty period blood. It is also a short menstrual period, lasting just one or two days. A very scanty flow should always be a source of concern, as in many cases, there will be a serious health issue that has brought it about.

However, this should not be taken to imply that a scanty menstruation all of a sudden is always a pathology. For instance, it could mean that you are in fact pregnant.

It has also been established that a scanty period is one of the side-effects that come with using hormonal contraception. Normal menstrual bleeding should last for between three and seven days. Within this period, you will excrete between 50 and a 150 milliliters of blood .

At times, certain disorders could develop during your menstrual cycle. Scanty menstruation happens to be one of the most widespread disorders that have been known to occur. When this happens, the blood loss is reduced to between 30 and 50 milliliters.

Typically, a thin flow is characterized by a reduced amount of period discharge. This appears more like spotting, as opposed to normal bleeding. In such instances, the discharge color could be light or in contrast, it could be brown.

Often, no symptoms accompany this type of period, but depending on what has triggered the appearance of the light period and no cramps, you could experience:

  • Headaches
  • Lightheadedness
