Kat A Former Clue Intern Shared Her Personal Experience Of Waiting To Get Her First Period Below

“Periods can be frustrating, messy and sometimes downright painful. Nevertheless, I couldnât wait to get mine. When I was nine, my mom taught me about periods, but stressed that I shouldnât expect mine to start any time soon since she had gotten hers later than average. Still, I was determined that that wouldnât be the case for me.

When I was 10, I woke up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, looked down, and finally, a little spot of blood! The wait was over! I was a grownup now, ready to tackle anything! I rushed down the hall to tell my mom who gave me a pad with an unconvinced look on her face. That night I was almost too excited to sleep, knowing what I could tell all my friends in the morning. You can imagine my despair when there was not a hint of red to be seen, only a small cut on my upper thigh. False alarm.

Throughout elementary and middle school I had to sit through various puberty talks and was given countless handfuls of pads and tampons from sex ed teachers âjust in case.â I had to watch all of my friends come into school ready to spill the details of where they were and how they felt now that they were âa real woman.â I wasnât as physically mature as they were but I felt absolutely sure that this milestone would make me fit in again. Days, months and years passed. I watched everyone develop, claim that they had âsynced up,â and relate to each otherâs symptoms. I felt excluded.

Three Months Without A Period May Not Be Normal

Menstrual Cycle Calendar and Phases

Amenorrhea can be natural part of womans life, but should never be ignored

DAYTON, Ohio A monthly menstrual cycle can be an unpleasant part of female life, but its regular visit plays an important role in a womans overall health.

There are times when a normal menstrual cycle may cease to happen in a womans life. In some cases such as pregnancy or the onset of perimenopause it can be a natural part of life stages. Or there may be times in a womans life where her periods are deliberately stopped using medications under a physicians supervision. While this is acceptable and healthy, it is not normal for a period to stop on its own without a reasonable explanation. It can signal something more serious when a woman fails to have a period over a three month period.

The condition, known as amenorrhea, can happen in two different phases. Primary amenorrhea refers to an adolescent who doesnt begin menstruating during puberty. This type of amenorrhea is rare in the United States.

Secondary amenorrhea, on the other hand, affects about 4 percent of women during their lifetime. This type of amenorrhea is when a womans period starts, but then stops. In most cases, this type of amenorrhea comes through natural changes in a womans body such as pregnancy or lactation. However, there are cases when it signals something more is going on inside her body.

How Long Does A Woman Usually Have Periods

On average, women get a period for about 40 years of their life.6,7 Most women have regular periods until perimenopause, the time when your body begins the change to menopause. Perimenopause, or transition to menopause, may take a few years. During this time, your period may not come regularly. Menopause happens when you have not had a period for 12 months in a row. For most women, this happens between the ages of 45 and 55. The average age of menopause in the United States is 52.

Periods also stop during pregnancy and may not come back right away if you breastfeed.

But if you dont have a period for 90 days , and you are not pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor or nurse. Your doctor will check for pregnancy or a health problem that can cause periods to stop or become irregular.

Teach Her Whats Normal And Whats Not

Your daughter might have heard in health class that a typical cycle is 28 days. But she should expect her first three periods to be pretty irregular before falling into a vague pattern.

âShe might have one and then not have another for 2-3 months,â Holmes says. âBy the time she has had three periods, they should start happening within 21-45 days of each other.â

When she does have her period, she shouldnât need more than six to eight pads per day. If sheâs filling up more than that, she should see her pediatrician or a gynecologist. And while she might get some cramping, severe pain â the kind that keeps her home from school and other activities â isnât normal, either, so itâs also worth a checkup.

When To Induce Your Period

Doctors may recommend people with oligomenorrhea a condition where periods are irregular and infrequent induce their period.

“In some situations, you’re still producing the endometrial lining that needs to be shed at least four times a year,” says Tamika K. Cross, MD, FACOG, an OB/GYN at Serenity Women’s Health & Med Spa. “That is sometimes the reason that polycystic ovary syndrome patients who aren’t having regular periods need to induce their periods. They need to be able to flush that out.”

If the endometrial lining is left to build up, it increases the risk of endometrial hyperplasia. This condition occurs when the endometrium becomes too thick and causes abnormal cell growth, increasing your risk for endometrial and uterine cancer.

Convenience is the other reason for inducing menstruation. If your period is coming during an inconvenient time, having it earlier can be beneficial.

“If somebody is going on a trip or vacation and they’re planning on swimming a lot, or even athletes or swimmers who don’t want to worry about tampons, that’s when people will induce their periods,” says Cross.

Before making any attempts to induce your period, Cross strongly recommends confirming that you are not pregnant, as you risk aborting the fetus. Once you’ve confirmed there’s no baby on board, here are the steps you can take to induce your period safely.

What If My Child Is Nonbinary Or Transgender

If your child is going through puberty and is biologically female, then theyâre on track to start menstruating. Although some nonbinary and transgender kids might take it in stride, many find the disconnect between their identity and whatâs happening to their body to be distressing.

Your best move is to ask your child how they feel about the fact that periods are on the horizon, Dundas says. âOnce that has been established, the goal should be to support them however they would like to manage their periods.â

Some might prefer pads because they donât need to touch their genitals. Others might opt for tampons because they arenât as visible. Or they might like menstrual cups, because they donât have to be changed as frequently.

If your child is having gender dysphoria, meaning they are severely distressed by the conflict between their gender and the sex they were assigned at birth, be sure to discuss that with their doctor and a mental health care provider. On the physical side, pubertal blockers might be worth exploring. There are pros and cons to this treatment, so discuss it thoroughly with your childâs doctor and mental health provider.
