Why Am I Bleeding After My Period Ended

Spotting Between Periods: Complications

Why did I start spotting a few days after my period?

Abnormal vaginal bleeding may be minor. But it could signal something more serious or even life-threatening, such as a benign growth like a polyp or fibroid, a bleeding disorder, an infection, or an injury. Itâs rare, but spotting can sometimes be a sign of cancer. To be safe, have your doctor check it out.

Why Spotting Between Periods Happens And When To Be Concerned

Bleeding or spotting between regular monthly periods can be alarming. When this happens, you may see just a spot or two of blood on your underwear or toilet tissue, or you may be bleeding as if youve started your period.

I often get questions about spotting between periods from my patients. While most of the time spotting isnt anything to worry about, it can point to a more serious issue that might need treatment.

What Is Abnormal Uterine Bleeding

Abnormal uterine bleeding is the name doctors use to describe when something isnt quite right with a girls periods. Doctors also sometimes call AUB dysfunctional uterine bleeding . Like lots of medical names, it can sound worse than it is. Most of the time, AUB isnt something to worry about.

Abnormal uterine bleeding means that periods may be heavier or last longer than normal or not come at all. Bleeding between periods is also a sign of AUB. AUB isnt usually a major problem, but it can lead some girls to develop anemia .

If a girl has AUB, it might mean her periods last longer or have more bleeding than normal. Or, it might mean the opposite that her bleeding is light and her periods arent coming as often as they should.

Because AUB isnt usually a problem, doctors often dont do anything about it. But sometimes they take action if a medical condition is causing AUB. Doctors also might treat AUB if it is causing another problem. For example, doctors may worry that a girl could get if she is bleeding more than she should.

Can Stress Cause Vaginal Bleeding

No, stress cannot cause vaginal bleeding. Stress can, however, cause an earlier or later menstrual cycle and cause bleeding in-line with a new cycle. If you have new mid-cycle bleeding and have not consulted a clinician, you should seek medical evaluation. It may be a sign of anything from a sexually transmitted infection , to fibroids, to a pregnancy, or it may have no definable cause.

Causes Of Bleeding Irregularities

  • Stress and lifestyle changes Stress and lifestyle changes, such as gaining or losing weight, dieting, changing exercise routines, traveling, illness and other disruptions to your normal daily routine can impact your menstrual cycle and cause irregularities.
  • Birth control Going on or off birth control pills can affect your menstruation. Some women may experience irregular periods or miss periods for up to six months after stopping birth control pills. Other forms of birth control, such as IUDs, can cause period irregularities or cause your period to stop. Birth control pills that only contain progestin may cause bleeding between periods.
  • Medications Some anti-inflammatory drugs, anticoagulants , hormone medications or steroids can affect menstrual bleeding.
  • Hormone imbalances An excess of estrogen and progesterone can cause heavy bleeding. This is most common for girls in the first year or so of having her first period and for women nearing menopause.
  • Uterine polyps or fibroids Uterine polyps are small growths in the lining of the uterus, while fibroids are tumors that attach to the wall of the uterus. Both are usually benign but can cause heavy bleeding and pain during periods.
  • Endometriosis Endometriosis occurs when the endometrial tissue that lines your uterus begins to grow outside the uterus, sometimes growing on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, intestines or other digestive organs. This condition can cause painful bleeding, cramps and painful intercourse.

    Ovulation Pain Or Midcycle Spotting

Mittelschmerz is a German word that translates as “middle pain.” It refers to the normal discomfort sometimes felt by women during ovulation, which is at the midpoint of the menstrual cycle.

Each month, one of the two ovaries forms a follicle that holds an egg cell. The pain occurs when the follicle ruptures and releases the egg.

This is a dull, cramping sensation that may begin suddenly in only one side of the lower abdomen. In a few cases, there may be vaginal spotting. Mittelschmerz occurs about 14 days before the start of the next menstrual period.

Actual Mittelschmerz is not associated with nausea, vomiting, fever, or severe pelvic pain. These symptoms should be evaluated by a medical provider since they can indicate a more serious condition.

Diagnosis is made through patient history.

Treatment requires only over-the-counter, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to relieve the pain. An oral contraceptive will stop the symptoms, since it also stops ovulation.

    Rarity: Common

Top Symptoms: abdominal pain , last period approximately 2 weeks ago, vaginal bleeding, bloody vaginal discharge, pelvis pain

Symptoms that always occur with ovulation pain or midcycle spotting: last period approximately 2 weeks ago

    Urgency: Self-treatment

What You Can Do About Uterine Fibroids

You and your healthcare provider may choose to leave fibroids with mild symptoms untreated. Tracking your symptoms can then help you know if your fibroids are changing, and at what point a treatment plan might be helpful. When fibroids do become problematic, there are many different options for managing and treating them, and for preventing their future formation:

Few Things That You Should Know

    • Spotting after your period may indicate pregnancy, but it is not always true. It may or may not be implantation bleeding, so you may want to take a pregnancy test to be sure.

    • You can become pregnant only after ovulation and successful fertilization, and the process usually starts at least 10 days after your menstrual cycle. Therefore, the possibility of you becoming pregnant immediately after your monthly period is quite low.

    • Spotting or bleeding 10 days after period ended is not associated with early miscarriage, unless you experience heavy bleeding that is accompanied with cramps.

How Does Spotting Differ From Light Period Bleeding

Why Am I Bleeding 2 Weeks After My Period?

Sometimes people describe light bleeding that occurs at the beginning or end of their period as spotting.

It can be hard to differentiate spotting from menstrual bleeding by just looking at the amount. Generally, if you have light bleeding that occurs within 2 days of your period, you should consider that part of your period, not spotting . However, if itâs very, very light like you only see a little on your toilet paper that probably could be considered spotting.

For example, if you have light bleeding on Sunday, no bleeding on Monday, and bleed enough to require a tampon on Tuesday, you should consider Sunday the start of your period.

Why Is My Period Heavy Then Light Then Heavy Again

    You Experience Ovulation Bleeding

You may experience bleeding at the time you ovulate. This normally happens midway through your menstrual cycle. What causes ovulation bleeding is not clear yet, but some experts believe that it happens when the follicle ruptures within the ovary. This type of bleeding is very light and will not last for very long. If it is ovulation bleeding, you may also have light cramping, especially on one side of the abdomen.

Uterine fibroids are a type of benign tumor that grow in and around the wall of the uterus. Spotting is one of the main side effects, along with infertility, painful sex, lower back pain, and a chronically bloated feeling. In other words, dont assume you have uterine fibroids just because youre spotting. There are a lot of other causes that are far more likely.

Your Uterus May Be Tipped Or Flexed

According to Maya Abdominal Massage Therapists, it is very common for women to have tipped uteruses – or a uterus that is in a flexed position. Why your uterus is not in the correct position, it can be more difficult for the menstrual blood to flow freely out of the uterus. This could cause your period to start, and then the flow being stuck for several hours or days.

Maya Abdominal Massage is an ancient technique of massaging the pelvic organs which is said to improve their positioning, increase blood and lymph flow by encouraging the uterus to return to its correct position.

    Causes Of Cramps After Period

Pain that appears midway through your cycle could be:

    • Ovulation pain: Pain that suddenly develops midway through your cycle may be a sign of ovulation, which is when an ovary releases an egg. Cramps may be sharp or dull, and they occur either in the middle or on one side of your lower abdomen or pelvis. They can last anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of days.
    • Implantation: If you have menstrual-like cramps but no period, it might be implantation pain. This type of cramping outside of your period can occur as early as six days and as late as 12 days after ovulation. Implantation usually occurs just before the time youd normally expect your period and may be accompanied by light spotting. But if you ovulated early in your cycle i.e. right after your last period you could theoretically experience implantation cramping a week or so after your period.

If you experience cramps that begin with your period and continue after its over, or if you have abdominal pain throughout your cycle, it could be secondary dysmenorrhea linked to:

What Does It Mean When Your Period Stops Early

Bleeding for less than 3 days can be normal for some women, particularly if you have always had periods that lasted 2 days. If however, you have had a change from longer periods to shorter bleeds, it can be a sign of a hormonal imbalance. Most commonly this change in period length is contributed to a decline in estrogen – the hormone responsible for building up the lining of our uterus which is shed at menstruation. Lower levels of estrogen mean that your body struggles to build a thick, healthy lining in preparation for the potential implantation of an embryo if you were to fall pregnant that cycle.

    What Is Vaginal Bleeding

Why Am I Spotting After Period Infographic

Vaginal bleeding is normally associated with monthly menstruation, a cycle that begins in females when they are 10 to 15 years old and continues until menopause at about 45 to 55 years old. Bleeding associated with the menstrual cycle may vary in timing, length or quantity. However, vaginal bleeding may also occur apart from the menstrual cycle.

Below is a summary of common disorders related to vaginal bleeding.

    • Polymenorrhea: Menstrual cycle of fewer than 21 days . The length of the cycle is counted from the first day of one flow to the first day of the next flow, and is usually between 24 and 38 days.
    • Oligomenorrhea: Menstrual cycle of more than 38 but fewer than 90 days .
    • Amenorrhea: No menstrual cycle for 90 days or more.
    • Metrorrhagia: Menses that lasts more than seven days, or spotting that occurs between menses. The usual duration of menses is three to five days. This condition might also be called intermenstrual bleeding because bleeding continues into the time after which it should have stopped.

When Is Spotting During Ovulation Considered Normal

There are some signs that can help you determine whether your bleeding during ovulation is normal or a cause for concern.

First of all, its essential to keep in mind that ovulation bleeding occurs only once during each cycle.

Before you start ovulating, you experience an increase in estrogen levels, which then drop after ovulation. As a result, progesterone levels rise for five days.

This fluctuation in estrogen and progesterone is what causes ovulation spotting. Some women do experience other symptoms, which shouldnt be a cause for concern if they are mild. However, if symptoms are severe, we recommend seeing a doctor as there could be an underlying factor causing spotting between periods.

Some of the most common symptoms of uterine fibroids are:

    • Periods that are heavy, long, and/or painful

    • Irregular bleeding

    • Frequent urination and difficulty emptying the bladder

    • Constipation

    • Difficulty getting pregnant or carrying to term

In rare cases, uterine fibroids can become very large, twisted, or infected. These situations can create intense symptoms, and may require immediate medical treatment .

Some studies show that pregnancy may cause fibroids to grow slightly bigger in up to 1 in 3 people . This might make some symptoms more noticeable. The most common complication of uterine fibroids in pregnancy is pain, usually felt in the second and third trimesters .
