How Long Do You Have To Change Insurance After Buying A New Car

Three Things You Need to Know About Grace Periods and Car Insurance

How long do you have to change insurance after buying a new car? Most car owners think that once they have driven the car for around twelve months, that they have fulfilled your legal requirements and can start applying for new car insurance. However, the fact is that this is not how long you have to change your insurance policy. You are legally required to stay with your current car insurance provider until at least twelve months from the date you bought the car. This is because your new car will need to be covered by an insurance company and the insurance company will want to know this date so that they can adjust their prices to suit the new vehicle.

This twelve-month waiting time is one of the reasons why many people are confused about how much time they have left to keep their policy. They wrongly assume that because they have driven the car for twelve months they will have twelve months to keep the new car policy. This is not how long you have to change insurance after buying a new car. If you drive the car for twelve months, you are still bound by the terms of your current insurance policy unless you agree to pay extra.

When Do Insurance Companies Consider A Car Insurance Payment Late

Technically, a car insurance payment is late once the due date has passed. But the grace period gives you extra time to pay without penalty if you fall behind.

The grace period for auto insurance payments is different for every policyholder.

“Depending on the insurance policy, the grace period can be as little as 24 hours or as long as 30 days,” says Shrader.

Check your car insurance policy if you’re wondering how late you can be on a car payment. Typically, the grace period is listed in the insurance binder. An agent can also tell you how long you have to make a payment after the due date before the policy will lapse.

Can I Pay By Phone Or Mail Instead Of Online

Yes. State Farm has ways to ensure the security of your payment information, but if you’re uncomfortable making an online payment, you can forward your application to a State Farm agent. They will contact you about payment arrangements. The coverage effective date will depend on the new payment arrangements made with the agent.

What Are The Consequences Of A Car Insurance Lapse

If you fail to pay for your car insurance within the grace period, your insurance lapses. You may be able to reinstate your car insurance policy with your current insurer or get a new policy with a different insurance company. If you fail to get car insurance after your old policy has lapsed, there can be consequences. A few of them include:

  • Legal consequences: You are required to have car insurance to drive legally in most states. If you are caught driving without car insurance, you will have to pay stiff fines.
  • Financial consequences: If you get into an accident while uninsured, all medical expenses and repairs will become out-of-pocket expenses.
  • Increased insurance rates: After a lapse, insurance companies see you as a high-risk driver, and your car insurance rates will increase.
  • Impact on your driving record: If you drive without car insurance the DMV can take action, including seizing your car or suspending your license.

    Standard & Poor Rating

Standard & Poor also looks at financial strength by evaluating credit ratings. The ratings are on a letter scale, with AAA being the highest possible rating.

S& P gave State Farm an AA rating, which is the second-highest score.

An AA rating is great, as it tells us State Farm is financially strong and is able to meet financial commitments, such as paying claims.

    Examine Your Coverage Levels

The first thing anyone shopping for auto insurance should do is examine coverage levels. What kind of coverage do you currently have? Do you have full coverage auto insurance with collision and comprehensive coverage? Or do you simply have the state minimum coverage requirements with liability insurance?

Read the fine print of your new car contract to see which coverage you need to have. Many owners of leased and financed cars must have full coverage so the lender can protect their investment.

Even if you own your car outright, its sometimes a good idea to opt for more coverage than the state minimum requires. This way, your vehicle is protected after a covered incident.

Nagle, Vale, McDowall & Cotter and William D. McDowall for Plaintiff and Appellant.

Robert A. Seligson as Amicus Curiae on behalf of Plaintiff and Appellant.

Rodriguez & Hoffman and Leopold A. Rodriguez for Defendants and Respondents.

    OPINION

    RATTIGAN, J.

At pertinent times prior to the controversy involved herein, respondents Francis Brown and Mary Rose Brown were the named insureds in an automobile liability insurance policy issued them by appellant State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company. The vehicle, identified in the policy as the “described automobile,” was a 1965 Chevrolet owned by the Browns. On January 11, 1971, while respondent Mary Rose Brown was driving the Chevrolet, it was involved in a collision with an automobile operated by respondent Elsie Cloud. State Farm thereafter brought this action for declaratory relief against all three respondents, seeking a judgment to the effect that it did not insure the Browns at the time of the accident. At the close of State Farm’s case in chief at a jury trial, the trial court granted respondent Cloud’s motion for nonsuit. Although counsel for respondents Brown did not join in the motion, the ensuing judgment of nonsuit was entered “in favor of all defendants” . State Farm appeals from the judgment.

Much like purchasing a new car, if youre buying used, take the time to carefully research and shop for the vehicle you want. Its also important to know that the car youre considering is reliable, affordable to maintain, and has a clean title.

Here are a few more dos and donts to consider when buying a used car:

Check the vehicle history report. Get a detailed report of the cars history from sites like Carfax or AutoCheck using the VIN . This report will tell you if the car has a clean title, if its been involved in a serious accident, the number of previous owners, and more.

Get an inspection. You may pay $100 or more to a mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection, but it could potentially save you thousands later in repair bills.

Go CPO. Certified pre-owned vehicles undergo a detailed, multi-point inspection and reconditioning process, and come with a manufacturer-backed warranty. You may also get a lower APR on the CPO car, which can help you save money over the life of the loan.

The Insiders View Of Car Insurance Claims

If youre lucky, youll have very little experience with collision repairs. That also means you wont necessarily know if youre getting superior claims service compared to other insurers.

Collision repair professionals have the advantage of dealing with insurers daily and seeing which companies try to cut corners on claims, and which companies have processes that slow down the repair process.

For this reason we incorporated grades of insurance companies from collision repair professionals, supplied by CRASH Network.

Drivers pay their auto insurance premiums every month, yet they only find out how well that insurer will take care of them when they file a claimwhich happens about once a decade for the average driver, says John Yoswick, editor of CRASH Network, which has a weekly newsletter covering the collision repair and auto insurance market segments.

But auto body repair shops see every day which insurance companies prioritize cost-savings by pushing to use the cheapest parts and repair methods, and which insurers take better care of their policyholders by prioritizing repair quality and the use of automaker-recommended repair methods and parts, he says.

This knowledge gives body shops a unique perspective on which insurance companies consistently earn an A when it comes to customer service and a proper repair for their policyholders, and which insurers deserve a C or D, says Yoswick.

How Much New Auto Insurance Coverage Should You Buy

The kind of car you buy can often dictate the type and amount of auto insurance coverage that you need. For example, it may make sense for older vehicles to have only the state-mandated amount of liability coverage. This can help with keeping your premiums low.

However, if you have purchased a brand new car, then a policy that includes collision and comprehensive coverage is generally recommended. In fact, if you have taken out a loan in order to finance your new car, then the lender will oftentimes require that you have full auto insurance coverage. This additional protection ensures the lender gets their money back, even if the vehicle is totaled or heavily damaged in an accident.
