Why Am I Bleeding 2 Weeks After My Period?

If you are trying to become pregnant, talk to your doctor before using any medicine. Be safe with medicines. Read and follow all instructions on the label.

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs , such as ibuprofen , reduce menstrual cramps, pain, and bleeding by lowering the level of the hormone prostaglandin.
  • If NSAIDs do not relieve the pain, try acetaminophen, such as Tylenol.
  • Take the medicine for as long as the symptoms would normally last if you did not take the medicine.

Be sure to follow all labels and directions. Do not take aspirin if you are younger than 18 because of the risk of Reye syndrome.

What Is Prolonged Period

Women period is due to endometrial shredding that occurs during your menstrual cycle. It occurs due to the interplay of many hormones like estrogen and progesterone.

If your period lasts between two and seven days, then its normal. Women can have periods that last for three days or longer periods that last up to six to seven days. This is normal.

However, any menstrual blood flow more than seven days is considered abnormal.

Period blood flow more than seven days is prolonged and requires urgent treatment. Long periods, in women of reproductive age, can prevent pregnancy or cause infertility.

My Period Lasting Longer Than Usual Is It Normal

If your period usually lasts for four days and increased to 6 days, then its not prolonged. Also, some women may experience prolonged bleeding once in a while and normalize the next periods.

If your period is persistently long and lasting more than seven days then it abnormal.

Causes of period lasting longer than usual include

  • Fibroid

Causes Of Bleeding A Week After Period

1. Old Blood

If you notice brown spotting a week or two after your monthly period, it would often mean that some amount of tissue and menstrual blood were not properly expelled out of your body. Since they could still be inside the uterus, they need to be discharged in a form of spotting even after your period has ended.

2. Infection

Bacterial infections and yeast infections are two of the most common infections that occur in women. These infections often expel colored spotting with foul smell a few days after period. While they are not the main cause, they may have an effect to abnormal bleeding or discharge, which is often mistook as spotting.

3. Deep Penetration During Intercourse

Deeper penetration during a vigorous or rough sexual contact could lead to very light bleeding and may sometimes create physical injury. It can cause bruises to the cervix which is usually accompanied with pain.

4. Unregulated Menstrual Cycle

Untimely bleeding or bleeding a week after period often happens to teenage girls while their bodies try to get accustomed to their menstruation. It may last for a couple of months or years until they are able to adjust to their menstrual pattern.

5. Oral Contraceptives

6. Polyps

Polyps are non-cancerous cells that grow in the uterus. Sometimes, some of these polyps burst and lead to bleeding or spotting.

Female Bleeding: When Should You See A Doctor

Thankfully, most of the time your period will come and go without causing much fuss. But what about those times when your cycle gets thrown out of whack and you have abnormal bleeding? Should you be concerned?

Every woman is different when it comes to her cycle. However, when period changes happen such as a heavier or lighter flow than usual or timing abnormalities it can be hard to decide if you need to call your doctor or if what youre experiencing is in the range of normal.

Its a good idea to always track your menstrual cycles, including how heavy your flows are, how long they last and how many tampons or pads you use during a single cycle. This information can be useful for your doctor.

We spoke to INTEGRIS Health OB-GYN Dr. Elise Schrop to get her insights on a scary topic. What causes abnormal bleeding, just what is abnormal anyway, and when should you consult your doctor?

“Abnormal bleeding is a very common problem for women,” Dr. Schrop says. “In fact, about a third of office visits to the gynecologist are for abnormal bleeding. It can happen to women of all ages but most commonly occurs in the first several years after a young woman starts having a period and as women start to make the transition to menopause.”

If you are experiencing a deviation in menstrual cycle from the normal and for no evident reason you are getting periods every two weeks, this can be an alarm of some underlying diseases and you need to see a doctor if the abnormality in periods is accompanied by factors such as:

More bleeding can cause anemia, if this occurs, it can be due to iron deficiency in the blood. You need to seek advice from a doctor regarding it. Doctor will check the iron level in the blood and hemoglobin, the decline in both is not a good sign, and a doctor will advise iron rich medicines for the increased hemoglobin production.

Having a low level of iron in the blood or low hemoglobin can be due to dietary imbalance or some other factors. Anemia can result in certain medical conditions like fatigue . It is therefore advised to take these things seriously and consult a doctor. Sometimes, if you are suffering from clotting disorders like low platelet count, you can also suffer from heavy bleeding which in turn makes you anemic. If you experience the following symptoms followed by heavy menstrual flow, this may be a sign of anemia . The symptoms of anemia include fatigue, headaches, weakness, dizziness, breathlessness or having difficulty in breathing, irregular heartbeat or heart palpitations. Hence if you experience such symptoms along with two periods in one month, you must see a doctor.

You’re On Hormonal Birth Control

Anything that manipulates your hormones has the potential to make your periods longer, says Dr. Toth. This includes all types of hormonal birth control like the pill, patches, rings, shots, and implants. The good news is that there are lots of options with varying levels and types of hormones, so if your body doesn’t respond well to one type or dosage, there’s a good chance you can find a different one that will work.

The length of your period is just one factor your doctor will use to help you determine which type of birth control works best for you.

You’re Super Stressed Out

Stress can affect your menstrual cycle in pretty much every way possible. It can sometimes lead your period to stop altogether. But other times, it can make your period longer or heavier or lead to mid-cycle bleeding. If you’ve noticed any changes in your period during a breakup, the death of a loved one, or another stressful event, talking to a mental health professional may be helpful.

Youre Taking Certain Medications

Medications such as anti-inflammatories, aspirin, or other blood thinners can also affect your menstrual cycle, says Dr. Horton.

Aspirin and blood thinners prevent blood clots but can increase the flow of your period, she explains. These medications can thin the blood so much that it causes your menstrual cycle to be heavy and last longer than usual.

As such, it is important to take medicines as directed and if your period becomes heavier or prolonged, to contact your doctor, says Dr. Horton. You may need blood work to determine if you are taking too much medicine, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories may be used to treat your heavy and prolonged periods.
