In an anovulatory cycle, no ovulation takes place, meaning that your ovaries dont release an egg. During this type of cycle, women may have some bleeding caused by uterine lining buildup or a drop in the estrogen hormone without having a true menstrual period.

How Soon After Your Period Should You Take An Ovulation Test Probably Later Than You Thought

Can You Ovulate During Your Period
Menstruation or a period is the bleeding that occurs when the endometrium is shed 12 to 16 days after ovulation. With this definition of a period, you cannot ovulate while on your period.
However, some women experience mid-cycle or ovulatory bleeding and may mistake it for a period. This can happen to women with very irregular cycles coming once every 3 months or 2-3 times in one month. Mid-cycle bleeding can occur in women with regular cycles as well. They may experience what appears to be a period, but, in reality, this is most likely ovulatory bleeding. Ovulation can occur when you experience mid-cycle or ovulatory bleeding.
Keep in mind that while you cannot technically ovulate while on a period because sperm can live in the body for 3-5 days after sex, pregnancy could occur from intercourse that takes place during a period.

When Is The Best Time To Take A Pregnancy Test
Ovulation generally occurs around day 15 of a 28-day cycle. In a normal pregnancy, an egg is fertilized in the fallopian tube and then travels into the uterus, where it implants itself in the uterine wall. A womans body begins to produce hCG from cells in the developing placenta soon after implantation of a fertilized egg inside the uterus. Around eight days after ovulation, trace levels of hCG can be detected from an early pregnancy. That means a woman could get positive results several days before she expects her period to start.
The tricky part of timing when to take a test is that the duration of the first half of a menstrual cycle is more variable than the second. The length of time from the first day of a period to ovulation can vary by several days from month to month. Sexual activity around ovulation leads to the possibility of fertilization of the released egg by sperm. But even then, the time frame for a fertilized egg to implant can vary. And hCG isnt produced until after implantation has occurred.
For the most accurate results, we recommend that women test in the morning on the day they expect their period to start. This allows for variability in the timing of ovulation, fertilization, and implantation. Testing in the morning provides a urine sample that is concentrated.
Truth: You Can Get Pregnant After 40
All that said, getting pregnant after 40 is entirely possible. Plenty of women have babies after 40 and even 41. Your risk of infertility increases at 40, along with your risks of miscarriage and pregnancy complications. It may also take a little longer for you to get pregnant. But youre not sterile just because you celebrated your 40th birthday. Even if youve started perimenopause, until youve actually completed menopause, you should use contraception if you want to avoid pregnancy.

Can I Get Pregnant Just After My Period Has Finished
Yes, although it’s not very likely. If you have sex without using contraception, you can conceive at any time during your menstrual cycle, even during or just after your period.
You can also get pregnant if you have never had a period before, during your first period, or after the first time you have sex.
There’s no “safe” time of the month when you can have sex without contraception and not risk becoming pregnant.
But there are times in your menstrual cycle when you’re at your most fertile, and this is when you’re most likely to conceive.

Hi Kate!
I live in a small town and fertility help is scarce. I am so excited I found this FORUM! I am trying to conceive my 5th child, God willing. I have gotten pregnant with 4 children using 50 Mg of chlomid in order to produce ovulation . I have hair on my upper lip and chin and probably have PCOS, but havent had any of my hormone levels checked.
Anyway, I have taken chlomid for 5 cycles now and provera provoked a period on 1/31/16. I took 100 mg chlomid on day 5-9 and then I had bleeding on day 15-19. With my ovulation kit, it is now saying I am ovulating today which is day 25 if i disregard the midcyle bleeding. Or if I consider the midcycle bleeding day 1 of a new cycle, it would be day 10. Im so happy to see that Im ovulating, but Im worried that my follicluar phase has been too shortor too long depending on when I would consider DAY 1. Is it dangerous to conceive at this stage?

Each type of pregnancy test is designed to detect a set minimum level of hCG. This is why pregnancy test manufacturers advertise the way they do: Know four days sooner, or Accurate up to six days before a missed period. However, while home pregnancy tests are quite accurate many boast a 99 percent detection rate based on laboratory testing results marketing claims can be misleading. Does Early Ovulation Affect My Ability To Get Pregnant
Not necessarily. One study found that when a woman ovulates before cycle day 11, she has less chance of conceiving than a woman ovulating later in the cycle, but the study was smallwith just 21 women. Another study of 696 cycles among 221 women found that the pregnancy rate per cycle for women who ovulated early was 20% compared to 21% overall. And in this study, the case with the earliest ovulation produced a healthy pregnancy and healthy infant.
Ultimately, your ability to get pregnant will depend on why you ovulated early in your cycle. Tracking your cycle for a few months is important. Bring this data to your OBGYN who can help understand whats going on.

It sounds like you have hormonal imbalance because you dont ovulate every month. This can be very challenging when trying to figure out the best time for baby making sex.
So I have some questions which may help us determine how fertile you are at this moment, being that your ovulation kit is saying that you are ovulating today, but youve had a very odd cycle with very little normalcy.
To answer your question as to whether its dangerous to conceive this cycle, Id say that its not dangerous to conceive, however if you truly are ovulating today, then Id consider the following:
Ovulation on day 25 is very late in the cycle and the egg would have a very high probability of not being able to be fertilized.
If we consider your mid cycle bleed as an actual period, and we consider February 14th as day one of a new cycle, then you would be on day 11 today, and that means the egg would be very young, and not mature enough to be fertilized. So in both of these cases, theres a lower chance of conception actually occurring.
If you have PCOS, then we know that PCOS will give false positive ovulation tests. And if youre getting a false positive ovulation test then the next thing I would do is to look at your vaginal mucus. Were looking for an abundance of mucus that you can swipe from the opening of your vagina or pick up off of your pubic hair or underwear. When you are highly fertile, a large amount of mucus sometimes falls the vagina and clings to the hair.

How To Track Ovulation Symptoms
Take note of when your period begins and ends and know how long your cycle lasts. Doctors say it’s best to have sex at least every other day, especially during the 5 days before you ovulate. They call this your “fertile window.” Your egg only lives for about 12 to 24 hours. But sperm can survive for a few days inside your body, so it’s ideal to have them already there waiting for your egg.
Watch for body changes
Your hormone levels change throughout your menstrual cycle. During the first half, your ovaries give off the hormone estrogen. When your estrogen levels get high enough, your ovary releases an egg.
