What Happens At Menopause

Two Periods In A Month: Why?

Women are born with about a million eggs in each ovary. By puberty about 300,000 eggs remain, and by menopause there are no active eggs left.

On average, a woman in Australia will have 400-500 periods in her lifetime. From about 35-40 years of age, the number of eggs left in your ovaries decreases more quickly and you ovulate less regularly until your periods stop. Menopause means the end of ovulation.

When Is A Menstrual Period Considered Irregular

A normal cycle from the first day of one period to the first day of the next can be anywhere from 21 to 35 days, says Becky Lynn, MD, the director of the Evora Center for Menopause and Sexual Health and an adjunct associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Saint Louis University in Missouri: We all think that 28 days is the normal cycle, but there’s actually some room for variability. To determine whether your menstruation schedule is irregular, count from the last day of your previous period and stop counting on the first day of your next. Repeat this for three months. If the number of days between stopping and starting your period is outside of the 21 to 35 days range, you have an irregular cycle. Menstruation can also be considered irregular if your cycle length varies by more than 20 days from month to month.

Why Do I Get My Period Twice A Month Sometimes

When females are experiencing bleeding after they have received their first period, it is important to check if it is menstrual bleeding or spotting. One can differentiate with the color of the discharge since spotting is dark red/brown and menstrual blood is bright red in color. If the bleeding is able to soak up an entire tampon/pad, then it could be a second period in the same month. There are several factors responsible for causing two periods in a month, some of which are as follows:

Weight gain/weight loss: Gaining or reducing weight affects the hormones responsible for controlling the frequency and duration of the periods.

PCOS: PCOS is a condition under which small cysts are formed on the ovaries due to an imbalance in the hormones the result of which is irregular periods.

Birth control pills: The consequence of eating birth control pills irregularly on the body can be a surprise bleeding which can happen in between the periods.

Endometriosis: Endometriosis is a condition in which the tissue lining the uterus grows beyond the uterus in the abdominal wall leading to painful and irregular periods.

Other factors responsible for causing two periods in a month are pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, puberty, excessive, uterine issues, etc. Irregular periods are sometimes curable if the lifestyle is changed and the medical conditions are treated properly. Let us look at the measures that should be taken for dealing with the problem:

Why Did I Get My Period Twice In One Month

Before going into panic mode, do note that this occurrence is not entirely out of the ordinary, especially if you experience short periods. Adult cycles typically range from 24 to 38 days, according to Healthline, but every situation is unique.

If you have two cycles in one month, it is possible for that to be completely normal, says Kirsten Karchmer, founder of menstrual wellness company Brazen.

However, youll want to take note of any adjustments to your routine that could have contributed to the increased frequency.

If its something thats never happened before, its likely due to some stressor or change, Karchmer continues. That could be a dietary change, a change in stress or a COVID vaccination, gaining weight, losing weight or changing your exercise. Read that as a signal as my body is really speaking to me.’

Given that were living in a difficult environment and have a global pandemic weighing on our normal lifestyle, Karchmer believes its necessary to find a meaningful stress management strategy. Not only will this enable you to handle external factors more effectively, but itll make that time of the month more manageable.

If stressors like weight fluctuation or dietary changes are not at play, health-related reasons could be the culprit. Per Flo and Healthline, conditions that might cause shorter cycles but more frequent bleeding include but are not limited to:

Why Am I Having Two Periods A Month?

Ive been getting my period twice in a month, at times it makes me really dizzy and feel completely drained of energy. I can hardly go places because when I do, theres always some mark or spot bound to show up as it seems like regardless of what kind of pad or how many I use it goes through. Im embarrassed to see someone about it, as I find this sort of thing difficult to talk about. Is there anything I can do that might fix the problem on my own?

Can Stress Cause Periods Twice A Month

Girl talk | PERIOD Q& A & ALL U NEED TO KNOW!

Stress could be a prime reason for irregular bleeding or spotting between regular periods. Stress, mental or physical, causes fluctuations in the bodys hormone levels. During mental stress testosterone levels rise. Such fluctuations in the hormones eventually affect the hormones controlling the menstrual cycle. Thus, stress can lead to increased menstruation in terms of both number of days or frequency.

Reasons Your Period Is Late When You Know Youre Not Pregnant

Have you ever had a late or missed period when you are certain you arent pregnant? It may cause you a moment of panic, but a late period is often caused by factors that have nothing to do with reproduction. If you have a late period and you are sure youre not pregnant, one of the following factors may be to blame.

You Might Be Dealing With A Medical Condition

Endometriosis

Endometriosis occurs when tissue that would normally line the uterus begins to grow on the ovaries or fallopian tubes. Because the tissue cannot be released anywhere, it begins to irritate surrounding tissue. This can cause very painful periods and problems with fertility.

Endometriosis may also cause you to have heavy periods or two periods in one month. There are ways to treat endometriosis which can range from surgery to hormone treatments. Be sure to talk with your doctor to discover which method is best for you.

Perimenopause

Perimenopause is the stage leading up to menopause, which can happen anywhere from 10 years before a woman actually begins menopause. This can cause a change in hormones affecting your menstrual cycle. Women who are experiencing perimenopause may experience heavy or light periods and long or short periods.

Thyroid Problems

An underactive thyroid or Hypothyriodism is a condition that can affect your menstrual cycle.

Not ovulating is a result of progesterone deficiency, which is a result from Hypothyriodism. Reducing sex hormones and impairing the detoxification of estrogen are all results of a Thyroid problem. Woman dealing with an underactive Thyroid may be dealing with heavy or light periods and a change in their period cycle.

Some clotting problems, hormone problems, and sexually transmitted infections can cause girls to bleed more.

What Causes Irregular Period

Menstrual cycle irregularities such as having period twice in one month can be due to various factors. Here are some of the causes:

  • Premature ovarian failure: Premature ovarian failure or primary ovarian insufficiency is described as the loss of normal ovarian function before 40 years of age. It can cause infrequent periods over a number of years.
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome: This is a common hormonal disorder that can cause small cysts to form on the ovaries, leading to irregular periods.
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease: This is an infection of the reproductive organs that can cause irregular menstrual periods.
  • Uterine fibroids: These are noncancerous growths that occur in the uterus. Heavy periods and bleeding between periods can be due to uterine fibroids.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding: Missed or delayed periods can be a sign of pregnancy. After pregnancy, breastfeeding normally delays the resumption of menstruation.
  • Extreme weight loss, eating disorders or excessive exercising: Menstruation can be disrupted by extreme weight loss, eating disorders like anorexia nervosa or increased physical activity.
  • Thyroid problems: The uterine lining can thicken as a result of thyroid diseases and in turn cause more bleeding.
  • Stress: Stress due to financial worries, arguments, or even exams can change your menstrual cycle temporarily.

Reaction To Birth Control

Hormonal birth control introduces hormones into your body. This can affect your menstrual cycle, and cause spotting in between periods.

You may need to try a few different types of birth control to find one that works for you. It also takes a few months for your body to adjust to a new method of birth control.

Talk to your doctor about what you should expect when starting a new birth control method.

Preparing For Your Doctors Appointment

Why Am I Getting Two Periods In One Month

Changes to your menstrual cycle can indicate a health problem, so its important to discuss abnormal bleeding with your doctor. They will likely ask a lot of questions about your symptoms.

  • How long are your cycles? Is this normal for you?
  • If your shorter cycle isnt normal for you, when did the changes to your bleeding start?
  • How long does the bleeding last?
  • What color is the blood?
  • How heavy is the bleeding? How quickly does it fill a pad?
  • Are there clots? If so, how big are they?
  • Do you have any other symptoms?

To calculate the length of your cycle, start counting on the first day you bleed. This will be day one. Your cycle will end on the first day that you start bleeding again. Many smartphone apps are available to help you track your cycle.

If you have a history of irregular bleeding, tracking your cycles on an app can help you identify a problem more quickly. It can also make it easier to share your cycle information with your doctor.

Skipping Or Stopping Birth Control

Oral contraception suppresses your normal menstrual cycle with hormones that keep your body from ovulating.

Birth control pills usually come with a three-week supply of pills with hormones followed by a week of pills without any hormones . The lack of hormones during the placebo week triggers your period.

The same thing can happen when you go off of the pill or even miss just a pill or two. This can happen even if you’ve had a recent period, leading to two periods in one month.

Your body can also react this way if you make a mistake with another form of hormonal birth control like the birth control patch or the ring.

The right way to restart birth control after missing one or more doses depends on the type. Always read the information that comes with your pills. You can also ask your provider or pharmacist what to do if you forget a pill.
