What Days Are Fertile Days

Ovulation happens about 14 days before your period starts. If your average menstrual cycle is 28 days, you ovulate around day 14, and your most fertile days are days 12, 13 and 14. If your average menstrual cycle is 35 days ovulation happens around day 21 and your most fertile days are days 19,20 and 21.

Your Menstrual Cycle And Ovulation

Your menstrual cycle lasts from the first day of your period until the day before your next period starts. This is 28 days on average but longer or shorter cycles, from 21 to 40 days, are normal.

During your cycle, an egg is released from one of your ovaries and travels down the fallopian tube. It is usually released 10-16 days before your next period. Occasionally, a second egg is released, within 24 hours of the first egg.

The egg only lives for a maximum of 24 hours after ovulation, and a sperm must meet the egg within that period for pregnancy to happen.

You can get pregnant up to 2 days after you ovulate. But if you’ve had sex in the 7 days before ovulation, it’s possible to get pregnant because sperm can live inside a woman’s body for up to 7 days and fertilise the egg when it’s released.

The length of a menstrual cycle can vary over time, so to make sure your calculations are as precise as possible, measure your menstrual cycle over the course of 12 months.

How To Predict When Ovulation Will Occur

Because most women ovulation occurs 12 or 14 days before menstruation will start, you should just count 14 days backwards from your predicted next period.

Now, from the instance above. Expected next period is on the 29th of March. 14 days counted backwards is 15th of March, when youre likely to ovulate.

“There are two phases to the menstrual cycle: the follicular phase occurs before ovulation, and the luteal phase occurs after ovulation,” says Lauren Sundheimer, M.D., MS, FACOG, an OB-GYN practicing in Orange County, California. Dr. Sundheimer explains that people who have 28-day cycles typically ovulate approximately 14 days after the first day of their period.

Though ovulation tends to occur 14 days prior to the next period, cycle length varies for from person to person and even cycle to cycle. This variation can make predicting ovulation especially tricky if you have irregular cycles since you don’t know when your next period will arrive.

The egg that’s released during ovulation survives for only 24 hours. Sperm, on the other hand, can survive three to five days in the uterus and fallopian tubes under the right circumstances, says Barbara Stegmann, M.D., a triple board-certified OB-GYN and women’s health clinical lead at Organon, a global health care company. So having PIV sex during ovulation or the days beforehand can result in pregnancy since the egg can meet with existing sperm in the reproductive tract.

Just kidding . In general, your period is the part of your cycle when youre least likely to make a baby. But regardless of timing, its impossible to be 100 percent sure that unprotected sex wont result in pregnancy.

If you have a 28-day cycle that runs like clockwork, your fertile window lasts for about 6 days mid-cycle . Your safest bet for unprotected sex is a week or so after ovulation just before, during, or just after your period.

But and were sounding like a broken record you could still get pregnant if you have an unpredictable cycle, if you have short cycles, or if you have sex within 5 days of your fertile window .

When Does Ovulation Happen

For the majority of women, ovulation happens once every month, approximately mid-way through their cycle, around 14 days since their last period .

But in reality, ovulation can happen almost any time from day 11 to day 21. This is because the average length of your cycle might be anywhere between 21 and 35 days.

Lets not forget that your body isnt always predictable either. Sometimes you ovulate on a different day just because thats your bodys natural rhythm that particular month, or youre under stress or undergoing an emotional upheaval, travelling, or even changing your lifestyle habits.

Because of this natural variation, it becomes much harder to identify exactly which day will be the magic number for you.

Early Symptoms Of Pregnancy

The most reliable pregnancy symptom is a missed period followed by a positive pregnancy test.

Many pregnant people do not have symptoms early in the pregnancy, just as many people who are not pregnant have symptoms such as nausea and vomiting.

Some

are reliable , especially if a person waits until the day their period is due.

If the test is negative, try waiting a few days. This gives levels of the pregnancy hormone human chorionic gonadotropin time to rise, increasing the likelihood of a positive result.

A doctor or midwife can test for pregnancy using blood or urine tests that may be more sensitive than a home pregnancy test. It is not typically possible to see a developing baby on an ultrasound until several weeks into the pregnancy.

A doctor or midwife can test for pregnancy, check for normal fetal development, and advise about early pregnancy health.

A healthcare provider can also help discuss a persons options for managing an unintended pregnancy.

Pregnancy is not an emergency, and it is safe to wait a few weeks to speak with a healthcare provider unless a person wants to monitor HCG levels or has pregnancy-related health questions.

Can You Get Pregnant Anytime In Your Fertile Window

If youre trying for a baby, then youll likely want to do everything you can in order to conceive. And with conception, timing is often really important. For the highest probability of getting pregnant, research has highlighted that its best to have sex in the days just before you ovulate and during ovulation rather than on the days following ovulation. This is because eggs only live for up to 24 hours following ovulation.

Approximately 5 days prior to expected ovulation, its recommended that you have unprotected sex every other or every day and then 2 to 3 days after expected ovulation, advises Flanagan, explaining that this helps to ensure viable sperm are present when the viable egg is released.

You can also get pregnant if you have never had a period before, during your first period, or after the first time you have sex.

How Natural Family Planning Works

Natural family planning involves identifying the signs and symptoms of fertility during your menstrual cycle so you can plan or avoid pregnancy.

If you’re interested in learning natural family planning, make sure you’re taught by a qualified fertility awareness teacher. Find a fertility awareness clinic in your local area.

There are 3 different fertility signals you can monitor and record for natural family planning. These are:

  • the length of your menstrual cycle
  • daily readings of your body temperature
  • changes to your cervical secretions

It’s best to record these measures together to give you a more accurate picture of when you’re likely to be most fertile.

You can use fertility charts to record and track your measurements over the course of each menstrual cycle. You can download fertility charts from the Fertility Education and Training site, with information on how to use them.

You can also download smartphone apps to track this information.

Sex Immediately Before Your Period

Ovulation usually occurs several days to a week or more before menstruation begins: about midway between the first day of your last menstrual period and the start of your next one.

A typical cycle is 28 days long, but many people have slightly shorter or longer cycles. In one study of 32,595 people, people with self-reported regular periods had menstrual cycles ranging from 23 to 35 days long. The most common day to ovulate is day 15 LMP.

If you are trying to be mindful of your cycles as a natural form of birth control, be aware theres a slight chance of pregnancy if you ovulate later in the cycle or simply miscalculate the dates of your next period. In one large study, even people who reported having regular menstrual cycles had a 6% chance of being in their fertile window on the day they expected their next period to begin.

The bottom line is that if you are trying to conceive, right before you expect your period would not be the best time to start. You can still enjoy sex, of course, but you are much more likely to get pregnant if you try again after your period.

A typical cycle is 28 days long, though some people might experience shorter or longer cyclesand it might not be the same every time. Youre most likely to get pregnant during ovulation, which typically occurs about halfway through your cycle.

What If I Have Irregular Periods

Period Based Training

If you have irregular periods, meaning that your periods are outside of the 2135-day window or if your cycle intervals vary by more than seven days each month , you should speak with your Gyn/OB or a fertility specialist. This irregularity may be due to a hormone imbalance and could make it more challenging to get pregnant using natural family planning methods.

Ovulation Test During Menstruation

LH tracking by ovulation tests can be used during menstruation. In addition, tests that track the crystallization of saliva will be indicative.

If you have a short menstrual cycle 21-23 days, then ovulation may well occur already on the 5-11th DC. It is better to start testing with the help of tests for LH from the 3rd DC, when the menstruation bleeding is already weak.

Such a large difference in the estimated date of ovulation is due to the fact that your real luteal phase length is unknown. If you know it, then it will not be difficult to calculate the date of rupture of the follicle. Tests should be taken 2 days before this day to compare the strips in dynamics.

Can You Get Pregnant On Your Period

Yes, but it’s unlikely. It’s possible to get pregnant during your period when:

  • You have a very short menstrual cycle .
  • You have long periods.
  • You were bleeding around the time of ovulation and mistakenly thought it was a regular period. If you had unprotected sex at that time, you could conceive.

Here’s why you could get pregnant during your period:

Ovulation happens during the middle of your menstrual cycle anywhere between 7 and 19 days before your period starts. During ovulation, an egg reaches maturity in one of your two ovaries, the ovary releases the egg into your abdomen, and it gets sucked into the nearest fallopian tube, where it can survive for about 24 hours. Conception occurs when an egg and sperm meet in a fallopian tube.

A typical menstrual cycle is 28 days, which usually leaves a good few days between the end of your period and the start of ovulation. But some women have cycles as short as 22 days. If you have a short cycle or long periods, you could ovulate right after your period ends. And because sperm can survive in your reproductive tract for up to five days, if you have sex during your period, it’s possible that live sperm will be there when you ovulate, ready to fertilize the egg.
