And, something I actually just learned is that your cycle length is actually the day BEFORE you get your period. So, if you get your period on what you thought was Day 28, you actually have a 27-day cycle. Your cycle length is calculated by the day before you get your period, which is day 1. How am I in my 30s and I still didnt know that??

Try Oral Contraceptive Pills
The oral contraceptive pill is one of the most effective ways of delaying your periods. However, one needs to remember that using oral contraceptive pills for delaying your periods is only a once in a while option. Using them too often can cause side effects. Take these pills only on the advice of a doctor. Do not take these pills back to back, for more than three months. For this method to work, you must start taking the pills a few days after your last periods. If you start them just before the periods, they will not work, says Dr Swati Dighe, gynaecologist at a leading hospital.
Downsides Of Delaying Your Period

Technically speaking, you can do whatever you like when youre on your period from sex to swimming, you should never feel like anything is off limits to you because of your uterus. Taking The Combined Pill Back
If you take a combined contraceptive pill, you can delay your period by taking the packets back-to-back.
How you do this will depend on the type of pill you take.
Examples are:
- monophasic 21-day pills, such as Microgynon and Cilest you take a combined pill for 21 days, followed by 7 days without pills, when you have a bleed . To delay your period, start a new packet of pills straight after you finish the last pill and miss out the 7-day break.
- everyday pills, such as Microgynon ED and Lorynon ED you take a combined pill every day. The first 21 pills are active pills and the next 7 pills are inactive or dummy pills, when you have your period. To delay your period, miss out and throw away the dummy pills, and start the active pills in a new packet straight away.
- phasic 21-day pills, such as Binovium, Qlaira and Logynon the mix of hormones in each pill is different, depending on which phase you’re in. You need to take these pills in the correct order to have effective contraception. Speak to your pharmacist, community contraception clinic or GP for more information before taking phasic pills back-to-back.
Taking your contraceptive pills in the ways described above will not affect how they work as contraceptives.

Take Progestin As Needed
If you arent on hormonal birth control and dont want to start, you can take progestin to prevent period bleeding until youre ready. By taking a progestin daily, you stop the trigger that signals the body to shed the lining of your uterus. Think of it as using the progestin keep lining stable until a better time for a period.

We prescribe it twice a day to start, but if any breakthrough bleeding occurs the dose can be increased to 3 times a day. Keep in mind that hormones can be unpredictable and there is no guarantee that it will work the same each time you try it. An important thing to remember is that Norethindrone Acetate is not a contraceptive and should not be relied on for pregnancy prevention.

Once a month, the lining of the uterus thickens in order to welcome a fertilised egg, if there’s no fetilised egg, your body rids itself of this excess tissue. Contraceptives like the pill prevent the body from ovulating and the uterus from thickening, meaning there’s nothing to expel, and no need for a period. The monthly bleed you get while on the pill, is not an actual period, but a form of withdrawal bleeding that occurs during your seven-day break. According to doctors, it’s perfectly safe to skip this interval on a temporary basis and run multiple packs together. But do consult with your doctor before you do this.
