What Is Safe Period
Safe Period/days denotes to the time when a woman has minimal chances of getting pregnant. It is also known as unfertile period/days. In such period, there is no egg in a womans body. So,if you will have intercourse with your partner in such days then there are no chances of gettingpregnant as there would be no egg to get fertilized by the sperm.
Fertility Awareness And Family Planning
Some women use fertility awareness as a method of natural birth control. One of the tools used is something called the Standard Days method. This establishes that if you have a period that is between 26 to 32 days long, days eight through 19 will be your most fertile days. However, this method is most effective when you have regular menstrual cycles.
If a woman has a regular period and uses the method perfectly, less than one to five women out of 100 will become pregnant. However, the key words here are perfect use. The typical use rate is different. Typical use means that the methods may be done incorrectly or measured inconsistently. In the first year of this typical use, 12 to 24 women out of 100 will become pregnant.
How To Prevent Pregnancy Using The Safe Period
Some women may have a shorter cycle than others. The length of the cycle also determines the timing of the ovulation.
It is important to note that fertile period in a woman is from five days before ovulation to the day of ovulation. The six days are called the fertile window, and correspond to the lifespan of the egg and the sperm .
The best time to get pregnant is having sex from three days before the ovulation. But having sex six days or longer before ovulation reduces the chances of pregnancy to nearly zero.
The menstrual cycle starts from the first day of the period to the first day of the next period. Once you have determined the length of your menstrual cycle , subtract 14 days from the end of your current cycle to determine the approximate day you will ovulate.
For example, if your period starts every 28 days, ovulation will be around day 14. The best chance of getting pregnant will be between day 11 and 14. If your period comes up every 24 days, your ovulation is likely to be around day 10, and most fertile period will be between day 7 and 10.
Women with longer period, like 35 days between periods, are likely to ovulate on day 21. The most fertile period is between day 18 and 21.
About 12 to 24 hours after ovulation, the chances of a woman getting pregnant are less likely.

How Do Ovulation And Pregnancy Work
Ovulation occurs when an ovary releases a mature egg. About once a month, an egg matures and the ovary releases it into the fallopian tube. It then heads toward sperm in the fallopian tubes and uterus.
Before arriving to meet the egg, the sperm must travel from the vagina, through the cervix of the uterus, into the uterine cavity, and into the fallopian tube to fertilize the egg.
It can take anywhere from about 45 minutes to 12 hours for this to occur. Sperm has a lifespan of about 2 to 5 days after entering the vagina upon ejaculation.
An egg is viable between 12 and 24 hours after it leaves the ovary. Sperm can stay alive up to 5 days after having sex. Implantation of an egg, which happens after fertilization, usually takes place 6 to 12 days after ovulation.
You can get pregnant immediately after your period. That can happen if you have sex toward the end of your cycle and are approaching your fertile window. On the other hand, the probability of getting pregnant right before your period is low.
If you track ovulation and wait 36 to 48 hours after ovulating, the chance youll conceive is low. The probability of pregnancy decreases the further in the month you are from ovulation.
If pregnancy doesnt occur, the uterine lining will shed and your menstrual period will start.

How To Calculate The Safe And Unsafe Days
- Note down the shortest menstrual cycle from the last six months, and subtract 18 days from the total number of days of shortest cycle.
- The number of days that you get after subtracting 18 days, count that number of days from the first day of your last period and mark it as X. X is the first day of the fertile period which is unsafe period.
- Next, note down the longest menstrual cycle from the last six months, and subtract 10 days from the total number of days of longest cycle.
- The number of days you get after subtracting 10 days, count that number of days from the first day of your last period and mark it as Y. The days after Y is the safe period.
- So, the days between X and Y are unsafe days to have sex, as there are chances of getting pregnant. All other days apart from these are considered as safe days.

How Do I Calculate My Rhythm Method Safe Days For Sex
You can use the steps below to find your fertile days. During the fertile days of your cycle, you should avoid unprotected sex.
- Day one is the first day you menstruate . Mark this on a calendar with an X.
- The number of days between the X’s is the length of your cycle.
Plan on tracking your menstrual cycle on a calendar for at least six months before you use the rhythm method as birth control.
When youve tracked your cycle for six months, take the following steps:
- Find the longest and shortest cycles from your calendar. For example, the longest might be 31 days, and the shortest might be 28.
- To find the first day of your fertility window, subtract 18 from your shortest cycle. If your shortest cycle was 28 days, subtract 18 from 28, which gives you 10. That means the first day you are fertile is the 10th day of your cycle.
- To find the last day of your fertility window, subtract 11 from your longest cycle. If 31 was your longest cycle, subtract 11 from 31. This means the 20th day of your cycle is when your fertile window ends.
- Using this example, you would abstain from sex or use protection on days 10 through 20 of your menstrual cycle.
Keep in mind that you cant get pregnant on all days of your fertility window. However, your fertile window is unsafe for unprotected sex because theres a chance you could become pregnant during this time. Conversely, if you want to get pregnant, youd have sexual intercourse as much as possible during your fertile window.
Is It The Birth Control Method For You
The calendar method is not for everyone. According to Dr. Bravo, it is only intended for women who can follow what is needed for this method religiously, and those with more predictable ovulation patterns.
Calendar method works with those patients that can comply, And also works for those patients that are regularly menstruating, meaning they can compure when they will have their period, and it’s predictable,” she said.
If you insist on giving this form of contraception a try, the first thing you need to do is to prepare. Track your period for at least 6 months before relying on calendar method as your main form of contraception. It would help to consult your OB-GYN first if:
- You recently had your first period
- You just had a baby
- You’ve recently stopped taking birth control pills or other hormone contraceptives
- You’re breastfeeding
- You’re approaching menopause
- You have irregular menstrual cycles
If you have irregular menstrual cycles, the calendar method may be a poor choice for you. Talk to your doctor to learn more about birth control options.

For example, a couple may have sex the day after a period ends. If ovulation occurs on that day or within the next 6 days, pregnancy is possible.
People with shorter menstrual cycles are more likely to become pregnant in the days after a period ends because they ovulate earlier.

In your menstrualcycle, there are days where sperm will fertilize an egg and induce pregnancy these areyour fertile days. Each month, your ovary releases an egg into your fallopian tube . The eggis 12-24 hours in the fallopian tunnel. Sperm will stay in your uterus and fallopian tube for 6days after birth.
