I Missed My Period This Month

Medicines And Medical Treatment

I missed my period and have cramps, but the pregnancy test is negative. What’s happening?

As discussed above, a number of contraceptive treatments can stop you having periods. Other medicines can affect periods too. Examples are some medicines for schizophrenia , an anti-sickness medicine called metoclopramide and strong painkillers called opiates.A number of operations may result in absent periods. For example, after a hysterectomy you will not have periods. A hysterectomy is an operation where the womb is removed. As the blood during a period comes from the womb, you will never have periods again afterwards. Another operation , which is sometimes done for heavy periods, also causes periods to stop. In this operation the lining of the womb is removed. This is not usually permanent and periods start again in time.

Treatments for cancer, such as radiotherapy or chemotherapy, can also damage the ovaries and result in absent periods. Recreational drugs such as heroin may also cause periods to stop.

Menopause Could Be Looming

According to Health Central and other reputable sites, its not officially menopause until youve missed periods for a whole year so Im not there yet, but menopause could be looming

Menopause can happen as early as 36 and as late as 60, with the average age being 51, which Im pretty close to.

Of all the menopause symptoms listed on Medicine Net, so far I can identify with occasional night sweats, fatigue, difficulty sleeping, feeling bloated, mood swings and after a good year of irregular periods, they are now absent.

From what Ive read, they could come back and continue their irregular pattern, or simply be gone forever.

You Are Pregnant But You Are Too Far Along In Your Pregnancy

Dr. Ann Gronowski, professor of pathology and immunology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis calls this the “variant hook effect.”

She explains that part of the problem is that “hCG comes in many different isoforms, and after five weeks of pregnancy, you get much more of one variant form than you get of the hCG intact molecule.”

In other words, at-home pregnancy tests are intended to detect early molecular forms of hCG. After five weeks of pregnancy, the hCG’s molecular structure changes and that structure is unable to be detected as effectively, sometimes resulting in a false negative.

This is when a serum test would be your best option for accuracy.

Diabetes And Thyroid Disease

I missed my period, have belly button pain, but no other pregnancy signs. What’s happening?

Jay M. Berman, M.D., FACOG, chief of gynecological services at Detroit Medical Center’s Harper Hutzel Hospital and professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Wayne State University, says other issues such as diabetes and thyroid disease may be to blame. “Many women will, for various reasons, occasionally not ovulate and this can cause an early or delayed menses,” he says. “Depending on her history, it may require further testing to determine the cause.”

What Is The Last Menstrual Period

The LMP is the date of the first day of the last menstrual period you had before conceiving. It is the first day that your last menstrual cycle begins when you see bright red blood, not just a little brown spotting. You should keep track of your LMP each month, either with an online calculator or just by recording it on a calendar each month. That is the date you use when entering the LMP on an online period calculator.

Whether you are trying to get pregnant or not trying to get pregnant, keeping track of your menstrual periods is vital. Besides pregnancy, missing a menstrual period could also be a sign of other issues like missed ovulation.
