Getting Pregnant After Having A Baby

After adjusting the monitor on my patients stomach so I could hear the babys heartbeat, I pulled up her chart to see her history.

I see here it says you had your first child nine months ago? I asked, not being able to hide the surprise from my voice.

Yes, thats right, she said without hesitation. I planned it that way. I wanted them to be really close in age.

And close in age they were. According to my patients dates, she got pregnant again almost the moment she left the hospital. It was kind of impressive, actually.

As a labor and delivery nurse, I saw the same mothers coming back almost exactly nine months later more often than you would think.

So exactly how easy is it to get pregnant right after you have a baby? Lets find out.

What If You Want To Get Pregnant After Youve Hit Menopause

Does Ovulation Place Take When. Ovulation Calendar: Know When is ...

Okay, so lets say youve already hit menopausemeaning you havent had a period in 12 months or morebut you would still like to get pregnant. Luckily, if thats your choice, science is on your side through a process called in vitro fertilization .

According to the US National Library of Medicine , IVF is essentially the joining of a womans egg with a mans sperm, outside of the womans body . In women who are of childbearing age, there are five steps to IVF: stimulation, egg retrieval, insemination and fertilization, embryo culture, and embryo transfer. However, because women who have already gone through menopause are not producing eggs, they do not need to go through the first two steps, and will instead have to use eggs from a donor.

From there, its like any other IVF pregnancy: Once a fertilized egg divides and become an embryo outside of the body, per the NLM, its placed inside the womans womb, where she can carry the embryo, then fetus, to term.

The bottom line: If you havent yet reached menopause but are perimenopausal, you can definitely still get pregnant. But if youve already hit menopause when you decide you want to consider motherhood, its not necessarily too late for that, either.

What To Know About Sex On Period And Pregnancy

FAQ Yoni Steam

Scientific studies have proven a woman might be fertile during her period, depending on her menstruation cycle length. However, the chances of becoming pregnant one to two days after the beginning of bleeding are practically nil. Nevertheless, even when a woman is still bleeding, her chances of getting pregnant grow with each passing day. And on the 13th day of the cycle, the estimated chance of conceiving after unprotected sex is 9%.

On the other hand, its exceedingly unlikely to conceive right before your period starts. This is because, unlike the higher survival rate of sperm in the Fallopian tubes, the egg is viable only for up to 24 hours after ovulation, usually around two weeks after the current period and before the next one. However, its beyond doubt that getting pregnant on your period is much harder. So, if youre trying to conceive, bear in mind its not the best cycle phase to succeed at it.

Using Ovulation Test Kits

Ovulation predictor kits are available from chemists and are quite easy to use. They work by detecting a hormone in your wee that increases when ovulation is about to take place. The simplest urine kits test for luteinising hormone , which surges 24 to 36 hours before ovulation. This will help to identify the best 2 days for conception, although you can be fertile for a day or so before and after this time.

It is best to become familiar with your usual menstrual cycle to help figure out when you should start testing. If you have an irregular cycle, then an ovulation predictor kit can help you identify the time of ovulation, but you will probably end up using a lot more of the test strips. There is also no evidence that using an ovulation predictor kit will improve your chances of getting pregnant naturally.

Egg And Sperm Lifespan

Once released, your egg isn’t viable for very long. You have from 12 to 24 hours after ovulation to get pregnant, according to the American Pregnancy Association.

Your egg isnt the only factor in getting pregnant. Your partner also needs to provide sperm to fertilize it. The length of time sperm can live varies. Some only live for a short while, and other may live up to seven days inside of you. On average, sperm remain viable for two or three days in your reproductive tract.

Can You Get Pregnant Before You Get Your First Postpartum Period

Even before your period resumes, you can get pregnant again and dont let anyone tell you otherwise. Thats because ovulation precedes menstruation in the monthly cycle.

So unless youre planning on back-to-back babies , youll want to use birth control as soon as you start having sex again which likely wont be for at least four to six weeks postpartum if you had a vaginal delivery.

All types of contraceptives are safe to use while youre breastfeeding. But keep in mind that your contraceptive needs may have changed.

For example, if you used a diaphragm or cervical cap pre-pregnancy, youll need to have it refitted by your gynecologist, as your cervix may no longer be the same size. It can take six weeks after the birth of a child for your cervix to return to normal.

Because estrogen can reduce a womans milk supply, birth control methods containing the hormone arent recommended until breastfeeding is well-established, around six weeks after giving birth. Instead, your practitioner may prescribe whats known as the mini pill, which is considered safe during breastfeeding.

Its also best to wait at least three weeks before starting a birth control method that combines estrogen and progestin, like the pill or the patch. The reason? Women are already at greater risk of developing blood clots in the postpartum period. These combined hormonal methods can up the risk.

What About Period Sex

Can you get pregnant 2 days before period? – Dr. Manjari Kulkarani

Weve heard period sex hailed as the ultimate time for unprotected love making. Though baby making odds are slim, its not 100 percent risk-free.

During the 4 to 8 days of bleeding, youre shedding the unfertilized egg from your previous cycle. This means there isnt a new egg ready for baby making, but it doesnt mean your partners sperm wont hang out until the new egg makes its debut.
