Pregnancy Loss In Dogs

Happily, miscarriage known as spontaneous abortion isnt very common in dog pregnancies. Embryos which are lost early in pregnancy are reabsorbed by the mother, so we dont know very much about how often it happens. Spontaneous abortion in the later stages of pregnancy is rare. When it happens it is usually the result of either an imbalance in the hormones supporting the pregnancy, or an infection of the uterus.

If your girl loses a puppy in the later stages of pregnancy youll notice abnormal bleeding from her vagina, and possibly find the lost puppy. Always take your Labrador to the vet if she loses a pregnancy. Shell need a checkup to make sure shes healthy. If the loss was the result of an infection then she will need to be treated.

It is also possible to miscarry one or more puppies, and carry the rest of the litter to term. Your vet will be able to tell you if your dog is still pregnant with other puppies.

The Bernese Mountain Dog comes from the canton of Bern, hence their name. Dogs of this breed are great watchdogs, but that also means they have a tendency to bark loudly. They may want to chase smaller animals and play roughly, even though they are quite gentle when fully mature and trained properly.

Stages Of Dog Pregnancy

doglles.com

Dogs pass through the stages of pregnancy quickly. Gestation periods are comparatively short in dogs, which means that the pups develop rapidly inside the womb over a period of two-to-three months.

Month One

During the first month, the embryos travel to the uterine horns, usually around day 7, and the embryos are embedded in the uterine lining around day 16. The fetus begins to take shape by day 22, and by day 28 or 30 a veterinarian should be able to detect fetal heartbeats on an ultrasound.

Many dogs do not show any symptoms during the first three weeks of their pregnancy. Some symptoms to watch for during the first month are:

  • Increased appetite
  • Clear vaginal discharge
  • Visible puppy movement in abdomen

Three Weeks Into Pregnancy

First signs of pregnancypoor appetite and/or vomiting

Starting about three weeks after mating, watch for morning sickness. Your dog may feel nauseous due to the hormone progesterone plus the effect of ligaments stretching as the puppies implant and grow. Some dogs will vomit others simply skip meals or pick at them. The nausea usually only lasts a few days, and then your dogs appetite comes right back.

Gestation Period For Dogs

After you breed your dog you will probably be surprised by the fact that nothing seems to happen. No matter how eager you are to find out if your dog is pregnant, theres nothing you can do to find out for at least three weeks.

In fact, after breeding your dog it takes several days for the fertilized eggs to implant themselves along the uterine wall. When this happens, about the third week after breeding, your bitch experiences a few hormonal changes which can affect her appetite. This is often the first sign of pregnancy. She may not feel like eating for a couple of days. Bitches can be prone to losing their embryos at this time so if your bitch was pregnant she can lose a litter at this point and you wont ever know it.

A normal pregnancy lasts 63 days but that time is calculated from the point of ovulation. Breeders dont always know the exact time of ovulation so there is sometimes some guesswork involved in figuring out when puppies are due. Most breeders calculate 63 days from the time of the first mating and allow for the puppies to come a couple of days early or late.

Your vet can also use a canine pregnancy test that measures the Relaxin hormone in your bitchs body. This can be done between week three and four after breeding. These tests are generally thought to be reliable but they dont give any information about how many puppies might be present.

Predicting The Gestation Period Of Dogs

As for all mammals, dog pregnancy begins when sperm fertilizes an egg. Dog sperm can live inside a dog for up to ten days, and whilst it does gradually degrade and become less likely to fertilize an egg, it still means that a girl mated ten days before she ovulates could still get pregnant.

At the other extreme, a female dogs eggs can survive for up to six days after ovulation, although they will also decline in quality over this period, so that late breeding is more likely to be unsuccessful or result in smaller litters. So in theory, theres a sixteen day window during which a female dog can get pregnant.

Now if youre doing the sums, thats a sixteen day window for getting pregnant, but a nine day window for giving birth. How is that possible? Ongoing research at Nippon University in Japan suggests that eggs which are fertilized late then progress through the early stages of development more quickly, so that the puppies are still born a predictable amount of time after ovulation. Amazing. Now you may be wondering how many babies you might expect.

Eight To Nine Weeks Into Pregnancy

Your girl is getting close! Its time for some final preparations before the big day:

    • Set up the whelping box. Give your dog enough time to get comfortable with her whelping box before she goes into labor. Put your dogs favorite dog toys in there along with soft but easy-to-wash dog blankets or pads. Encourage your girl to nap in the box. Maybe give her some dog chew toys to work on while she rests there. You want her totally at ease with the whelping box so she will willingly whelp there and not under your bed or on your new sofa.
    • Watch for nesting. In the days or hours leading up to whelping, most dogs will do some nesting. You may find your dog scuffing up blankets, shredding papers, or digging. She may also pace or pant as the first stage of labor gets started.
    • Daily temperature checks. Get your dog accustomed to having her temperature taken. Use a digital thermometer that gives a quick readoutand give her plenty of positive reinforcement. Rectal temperature is most accurate, but always lubricate the tip of the thermometer so it slides in easily. Start checking your dogs temperature about a week before her due date. Dogs tend to have a fairly dramatic temperature dropdown to 99 or 98 degrees12 to 24 hours before whelping. You might miss this change, but if you see it, it is a reliable sign that labor is about to begin.
