Sex Immediately Before Your Period
Ovulation usually occurs several days to a week or more before menstruation begins: about midway between the first day of your last menstrual period and the start of your next one.
A “typical” cycle is 28 days long, but many people have slightly shorter or longer cycles. In one study of 32,595 people, people with self-reported regular periods had menstrual cycles ranging from 23 to 35 days long. The most common day to ovulate is day 15 LMP.
If you are trying to be mindful of your cycles as a natural form of birth control, be aware there’s a slight chance of pregnancy if you ovulate later in the cycle or simply miscalculate the dates of your next period. In one large study, even people who reported having regular menstrual cycles had a 6% chance of being in their fertile window on the day they expected their next period to begin.
The bottom line is that if you are trying to conceive, right before you expect your period would not be the best time to start. You can still enjoy sex, of course, but you are much more likely to get pregnant if you try again after your period.
When Do You Ovulate After Your Period
Whether youre planning to become pregnant in the most natural way possible, or experimenting with natural family planning methods, its essential that you know exactly when you ovulate after your period.
Miss that tiny window of opportunity and you could face yet another disappointing month without being able to fall pregnant. Or you might misjudge your bodys signals and accidently conceive when you werent planning to.
So the big question is, when exactly do you ovulate after your period? And how on earth do you know when youve got the date right? Lets take a look.
What If I Have Irregular Periods
If you have irregular periods, meaning that your periods are outside of the 2135-day window or if your cycle intervals vary by more than seven days each month , you should speak with your Gyn/OB or a fertility specialist. This irregularity may be due to a hormone imbalance and could make it more challenging to get pregnant using natural family planning methods.

How Long Is A Menstrual Cycle
For menstruating women, an average menstrual cycle lasts 28 days. It starts with the first day of the last period and ends with the first day of the next menstrual period. However, the length of womens cycles varies, particularly for the first year or 2 after a young woman has her first period. Women may have cycles as short as 21 days, or as long as 45 days during the first few years. However, anything outside of this range may require medical attention.

Lets Assume A Typical Month
- Period Lets assume you got your period on July 14th, it lasted 4 days and ended on July 18th
- Unprotected sex You and your partner decided to have unprotected sex right when your period was over, on July 19th
- Sperm survival A sperm cell can theoretically live in your body for 5 days until July 24th
- Ovulation You happened to ovulate sooner than usual, and an egg cell appeared in your body on July 23rd
- Chances of pregnancy Both a sperm cell and an egg cell will be in your body at the same time and you will most probably get pregnant.

What About Right Before Your Period
The likelihood of getting pregnant right before your period is extremely low. For women with a typical 28- to 30-day cycle or longer and their cycles are regular, it is fairly safe to say your ovulation occurred between Day 11 and Day 21. The egg is only available for 12 to 24 hours for conception.
This means the days right before your period are the safest to have sex without the expectation of getting pregnant. The number of safe days right before your period go up with longer cycles and lessen with shorter cycles.
If you wait 36 to 48 hours after ovulation, you should be beyond the possibilities of conception. The further you are from ovulation, the less likely your chance for conceiving. This is not the time to have sex if you are trying to conceive. Its still a good time to enjoy intimacy with your partner.

How To Track Your Cycle
Working out your fertility window can be helped by tracking your menstrual cycle. You can simply mark your periods on a calendar or try some of the many apps available online .
The average menstrual cycle is 28-35 days. Ovulation usually occurs 14 days prior to your period starting. We recommend you track two to three cycles and work out the average length of your cycle. From this you can work out the average time you are likely to ovulate.
- If your cycle is 28 days, ovulation should occur on day 14. Therefore aim to have regular intercourse from 10 days after your period has started.
- If your period is 35 days, then ovulation should occur at 21 days and intercourse should be from 17 days after your period started.
Finding The Best Time To Get Pregnant
If you want to get pregnant and you have regular periods, the best time to have sex is the day before you ovulate. You also have a good chance of conceiving in the five days leading up to as well as on the actual day of ovulation. Basically, the more often you have sex during this window, the better. Frequent intercourse means increased sperm and, since sperm quality has a short shelf life, its good to strike when its fresh.
Many people use a variety of fertility methods and products to track changes to their basal body temperature and cervical mucus however, turning your journey into a complicated project wont necessarily help you get pregnant any more quickly. In fact, it could create obsessive behavior and be hard on your relationship with your partner. If youve already been tracking and collecting all of this data, your doctor will certainly take it into consideration. But if youre healthy and have regular periods, the most effective way to get pregnant is to simply stop using contraception .
Understanding Your Ovulation Calculator Results
There are many ovulation calculators available today that estimate when your fertile days will occur. These calculators are a form of calendar method and work on average data without reading anything about your personal hormone levels. However, none of us are average:1. Cycle lengths vary from woman to woman and cycle to cycle in fact nearly 52% of menstrual cycles vary by 5 or more days12. The timing of ovulation can vary by a few days, even in regular cycles.
Should we have intercourse every day I am fertile?
Professor William Ledger
Sperm that are stored within the testicles for too long accumulate damage to the DNA and are less fertile. With couples who have frequent intercourse, the man will have a lower sperm count per ejaculation but the sperm will be more fertile. If you are trying to conceive then try to have intercourse at least every other day around the time of ovulation.

Glands Involved In Ovulation
Ovulation depends on the activity of various glands and their hormones, including:
- hypothalamus located within the brain. The hypothalamus uses hormones to communicate with the pituitary
- pituitary known as the master gland of the hormone system. It is located within the brain, at the base of the skull, and is connected to the hypothalamus by a thin stalk. The pituitary uses chemicals to prompt the ovaries to produce their hormones
- ovaries the two almond-shaped glands located within a womans pelvis that contain the ova. The ovaries make the two female sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone.

Medical Tests For Ovulation
Medical tests can check whether or not ovulation took place. These tests can include:
- blood test to check for the presence of progesterone. A level greater than 20 nmol/L indicates that ovulation took place. This test must be taken about three to 10 days before the first day of the next expected period
- pregnancy ultrasound the presence of a foetus is the only absolute proof that ovulation took place. Medical tests such as ovulation predictor kits and blood tests can only ascertain that ovulation probably not definitely occurred.
Preparing For The Next Period
As the empty follicle shrinks, if the egg is not fertilized, levels of estrogen and progesterone decrease. Without the high levels of hormones to help maintain it, the thick womb lining that has been built up starts to break down, and your body sheds the lining. This is the start of your period and the beginning of your next menstrual cycle.
As the empty follicle shrinks, if the fertilized egg has not implanted into the womb, your level of progesterone decreases. The womb no longer needs to maintain an environment to support a baby so your body needs to reset ready for the next cycle. Any PMT symptoms that you have will start to decrease. Without the high levels of hormones to help maintain it, the thick womb lining which has built up starts to breakdown and your body will shed this. This is the start of your period and the beginning of your next cycle. For illustration purposes only
If the egg has been fertilized and implanted into the womb, the empty follicle is maintained by the increasing level of pregnancy hormone . It continues to produce estrogen and progesterone for much longer until the placenta is mature enough to support the developing embryo. For illustration purposes only
If the egg has been fertilized, it may successfully implant itself into the womb lining. This usually takes place about a week after fertilization.

Can You Ovulate More Than Once In A Given Cycle
Maybe, but its not clear whether this would have any additional effect on fertility. One study from 2003 suggested that some people have the potential to ovulate two or three times in a given menstrual cycle. But other researchers disagreed with the conclusions, emphasizing that only one fertile ovulation happens per cycle.
Its possible to release multiple eggs during one ovulation. Releasing multiple eggs can happen spontaneously, or as part of treatments for infertility. If more than one egg is fertilized, this situation may result in fraternal multiples, like twins. Approximately 2 out of every 3 sets of twins are fraternal twins.
You Had A Period Then You Had Unprotected Sex Are You Pregnant
Possibly, but probably not. If you have a relatively predictable cycle , heres how your odds of baby making shake out:
- If you have a super short cycle , its possible though rare to get pregnant from having sex just after your flow. Sperm can live up to 5 days after sex, so they might swim around long enough to meet up with your next egg.
- If you have irregular cycles, its possible but still rare! to get pregnant from period sex or sex just before or after your flow.
- Youre most likely to get pregnant during your fertile window, the 6-ish days in the middle of a 21- to 35-day cycle.
Getting pregnant just before or after your period is unlikely but its not impossible.
Birth control is the only tried-and-true way to avoid getting preggo, even during your period. And if youre trying for a bun in the oven, calculating your odds throughout the month is still helpful. The more you know, right?

Next What Is Ovulation Signs After Period
Ovulation takes place the moment your ovaries lets out one or more ova into the Fallopian tubes. The process of ovulation easily creates an environment to get pregnant. Usually, between 12 and 14 days before your next period, you are very likely to ovulate.
This means that, if you can possibly tell when menstruation will come next, you can predict next ovulation date.
Managing Fertility After Your Period
You don’t want to worry about getting pregnant before you’re ready. That’s why it’s essential to know your cycle and your body and use protection whenever there’s a chance you could get pregnant.
If you had unprotected PIV sex during your period and are concerned that you may be expecting, look out for early pregnancy symptoms like mild lower abdominal cramping, breast tenderness, and moodiness. Other common pregnancy symptoms will manifest closer to six or seven weeks of gestation, including nausea, vomiting, and fatigue.

Ovulation During Missed Period
As I wrote in the previous section, very often during an unstable cycle, women think about a missed period, but actually there was no ovulation yet or the second phase is still ongoing. It is believed that a cycle of up to 45 days is normal and does not require correction, if everything else is within normal limits.
Here is an example of a pregnant BBT chart, where ovulation occurred at a time when many girls were already waiting for their periods :
Hint: Before talking about the missed period, you need to make sure that ovulation has actually occurred. If you did not track it, wait for your period and from this cycle begin to monitor the release of the egg. Only if you have a superstable cycle or 100% had ovulation more than 16 days ago then this is a missed period and you can take a pregnancy test.

When To Do An Hcg Test If Conception Occurred A Week Before The Expected Menstruation
The first ultrasensitive pregnancy test can be done on the 7-8th DPO days after ovulation .
HCG in the urine appears only after implantation of the embryo, and this happens about a week and a half after fertilization. So, on the 7-10th DPO, the test for hCG can already show a second weak strip.
The first early signs of pregnancy are described in great detail in this article.

Treatment For A Luteal Phase Defect
Effective treatment for luteal phase defect is not clear. That said, you should bring any concerns you have about your menstrual cycle to your doctor. They might want you to try certain treatments, including:
- Address underlying conditions. For example, if you have a thyroid condition it could affect your menstrual cycle and fertility. Your doctor would want to start by treating any condition that could be causing problems with your periods or fertility.
- Boost ovulation with fertility drugs. This treatment can strengthen the corpus luteum and could lead to a healthier luteal phase.
- Progesterone supplementation. This treatment is highly controversial, as it is not clear whether progesterone supplements can improve fertility or reduce early miscarriage. Research has indicated that supplemental progesterone might be beneficial for women who have had three or more miscarriages.
- hCG injections. Low doses of hCG can be given through the luteal phase, but progesterone supplementation is more common and has fewer side effects.
Your doctor might prescribe progesterone injections or progesterone suppositories if you are undergoing IVF treatment. Progesterone supplementation has been shown to improve the luteal phase and improve pregnancy outcomes with IVF.
