After tracking several cycles, patterns might start to appear. Those seemingly random headaches and mood swings could be attributed to hormone fluctuation. Or, it might turn out that what is perceived as irregular discharge is actually quite normal mucus. However, Urrutia says the reverse is true as well.

Irregular bleeding patterns can indicate a health issue. If you find that you are bleeding more frequently than every 21 days, bleeding less frequently than every 40 days, or having heavier than average periods that last eight days or longer, you should see a doctor, she says.

Irregularity or absence of ovulation might be an indication of an issue like polycystic ovarian syndrome , and is reason to talk to a doctor as well.

If a doctors visit is needed, Urrutia says it will usually include an ultrasound, Pap smear and testing for an infection. Some of the common causes of long or irregular periods include PCOS, polyps, fibroids, infection or pregnancy.

Urrutia says, Tracking your cycles can also shed light on health issues that could happen in the future. Really long periods and PCOS are associated with increased rates of heart disease, diabetes and other long-term health risks.

How Does Ovulation Relate To Periods

Ovulation is the release of an egg from the ovaries. The same hormones that cause the uterus lining to build up also cause an egg to leave one of the ovaries. The egg travels through a thin tube called a fallopian tube to the uterus.

If the egg is fertilized by a sperm cell, it attaches to the wall of the uterus, where over time it develops into a baby. If the egg is not fertilized, the uterus lining breaks down and bleeds, causing a period.

You Can Get Pregnant During Your Period

Itâs time to squash that age-old myth: Your period doesnât protect you from pregnancy. There are a couple of reasons why. First, some women may bleed when their ovaries release an egg each month, called ovulation, and mistake it for their period. Youâre at your peak fertility when you ovulate. So if you have sex during this time, it could actually make you more likely to get pregnant.

Second, you may ovulate before your period is over or within a few days after the bleeding stops. Since sperm can hang out in your body for up to 3 days, having sex during your period could lead to conception.

Use a condom or other form of birth control to prevent an unplanned pregnancy, no matter what time of the month it is.

General Overview Of The Menstrual Cycle:

The menstrual cycle includes several phases. The exact timing of the phases of the cycle is a little bit different for every woman and can change over time.

    Cycle days

The first day of menstrual bleeding is considered Day 1 of the cycle.

Your period can last anywhere from 3 to 8 days, but 5 days is average.

Bleeding is usually heaviest on the first 2 days.

    Days 6-14

Once the bleeding stops, the uterine lining begins to prepare for the possibility of a pregnancy.

The uterine lining becomes thicker and enriched in blood and nutrients.

    Day 14-25

Somewhere around day 14, an egg is released from one of the ovaries and begins its journey down the fallopian tubes to the uterus.

If sperm are present in the fallopian tube at this time, fertilization can occur.

In this case the fertilized egg will travel to the uterus and attempt to implant in the uterine wall.

    Days 25-28

If the egg was not fertilized or implantation does not occur, hormonal changes signal the uterus to prepare to shed its lining, and the egg breaks down and is shed along with lining.

The cycle begins again on Day 1 menstrual bleeding.

    What Are The Stages

The process happens slowly over three stages:

Perimenopause. Your cycles will become irregular, but they havenât stopped. Most women hit this stage around age 47. Even though you might notice symptoms like hot flashes, you can still get pregnant.

Menopause. This is when youâll have your final menstrual period. You wonât know for sure itâs happened until youâve gone a year without one. Hot flashes, vaginal dryness, sleep problems, and other symptoms are common in this stage.

Postmenopause. This begins when you hit the year mark from your final period. Once that happens, youâll be referred to as postmenopausal for the rest of your life. Keep in mind that after more than 1 year of no menstrual periods due to menopause, vaginal bleeding isn’t normal, so tell your doctor if you have any ASAP.

    You Have Uterine Scarring

Scarring in the uterus can lead to shorter periods. This is known as Asherman Syndrome, a rare condition that most often occurs in women who have had multiple dilation and curettage procedures, says Dr. Richardson. D& C ‘s are often used to empty the uterus following miscarriage, as an abortion method, and to treat certain gynecological conditions.

Women who have Asherman Syndrome have shorter cycles or amenorrhea because only the areas of the uterus that are not scarred are capable of bleeding. The more scarring that is involved, the less bleeding will occur.

This condition would be diagnosed by hysteroscopy, says Dr. Richardson, and the adhesions would have to be removed surgically in order for your flow to return to normal and to improve your ability to conceive, if desired.

Brown Or Dark Red Period Blood

Sometimes at the beginning or end of your period, your blood might be brown or dark red , instead of red. Brown menstrual blood near the beginning or end of your period is normal, and is just a sign that the discharged blood is older. Its your bodys way of cleaning out your uterus and vagina and preparing it for your next menstrual cycle.

Sometimes, we also experience brown period blood in between periods. Usually, youll notice this darker spotting if youre just starting your period, beginning or changing your birth control, or nearing menopause. Why? Well you can thank your hormones for that. As your hormones change, so does the color of your period blood.

Other reasons why you may be experiencing brown / dark red blood could be due to lochia , spotting during pregnancy, or suffering from a missed miscarriage. If you think this is the case, see your doctor ASAP.

“The colour of your period blood, when you experience bleeding, and the amount blood lost during your period are all really helpful signs in order to better understand your body and health.”

    Cause Of The Menopause

How Soon After My Period Can I Get Pregnant

A number of hormones are responsible for initiating your menstrual cycle each month. These are controlled by other hormones which are released from the pituitary gland in the brain. When a woman reaches a certain age, your pituitary hormones begin to decline, which in turn means that the ovaries stop producing their sex hormones as efficiently this means ovulation will stop. As ovulation stops, so do your periods.

However, this process often happens very gradually and hormone fluctuations along the way are common this means the irregular periods and other symptoms as described below are often a part of the experience.

How To Calculate Your Due Date If You Dont Remember When Your Last Period Was

Signs That Your First Period Is Coming!//No Boys Aloud

The second you see a positive pregnancy test result, it’s only natural to start doing the math to figure out the delivery date. After all, it’s handy to know how much time is left before the baby’s arrival. But how can you calculate your due date if you don’t remember when your last period occurred? There are some workarounds, thankfully.

Why is this missed period so important, anyway? For the most part, it makes the whole calculation process much easier. Because most pregnancies last for approximately 40 weeks, the easiest way to estimate the due date is to figure out the last menstrual period and add 40 weeks to that, as noted in What to Expect. It’s simple enough, but not everyone keeps detailed records of menstruation, and some people have irregular periods that are notoriously difficult to track.

There are plenty of other ways to guess a due date, however. âThe best way to calculate an estimated due date when you donât know the date of the last menstrual period is by ultrasound,â as doula Christine Strain, CD , tells Romper. âEarly ultrasounds are one of the most accurate ways to date a pregnancy .â

Another way is to guess the babyâs conception date. âIf the person knows the date of the sex that led to conception that would be another way to estimate it, but it could be off by several days as sperm can live for several days in the Fallopian tubes,â says Strain. Although not as exact as ultrasounds, itâs still a helpful tool to have in mind.
