How We Chose The Best Dental Insurance With No Waiting Period

Dental Insurance, No Waiting Periods

We looked at many variables when comparing the dental insurance policies with no waiting period. We started by choosing plans that had no waiting period in their policy description. Then we reviewed the number of programs available without a waiting period, the network size of the company, the number of states where it’s available, the annual maximums, and deductibles. We also compared coverage and the rates quoted to determine the best one. Lastly, we looked at the company’s ratings from unbiased sources. Also note: It is essential to investigate the policy stipulations for where you live.

Denali Dental: Best Preventive

Denali offers two dental plans: the Summit Plan and the Ridge Plan. Both pay 100% for preventive services and 50% for diagnostic services in the first year.

The Summit plan also covers 30% of basic and major services in the first year. Then in the second year, it covers 75% of diagnostic services and 40% for basic and major services.

The Ridge plan pays 10% for basic and major services in the first year, which increases to 25% in the second year. Diagnostic services coverage increases to 60% in the second year.

In the third year, diagnostic coverage increases to 70% and basic and major coverage to 40%. And in the fourth year, the diagnostic services coverage reaches 80% and basic and major services coverage reaches 50%.

For our purposes of finding no waiting period dental insurance, we are most interested in the Ridge plan. It has a maximum benefit of up to $2,500 and there are no waiting periods for any of the treatments.

In return, as we mentioned above, this plan covers a lower percentage of treatment than the Summit Plan does, but if you need dental care right away on major services, it may be worth it to get some immediate coverage.

Types Of Dental Coverage

There are a few different types of dental insurance the difference between plans typically has to do with which dental service providers you can see on your network. Lets take a look at a few of the different types of dental insurance plans youll see when you shop.

  • Dental health maintenance organization : DHMO plans work a lot like HMO health insurance plans. When you sign onto a DHMO plan, youll receive a list of dental health care providers that accept your insurance. Youll need to see a dentist within your plans network if you want to use your insurance. You cant use your insurance if you go outside of your network. DHMOs are typically the most affordable dental insurance youll find.
  • Preferred provider organization : Unlike a DHMO plan, you can see any dentist you want on a PPO plan. You might be able to save money if you visit a dentist within your network, but you can elect to see any dentist for services and procedures. PPO plans typically cost more than DHMO plans but might be worth the extra money if you have a dentist that you already enjoy seeing.

Occasionally, you might see a company that offers a dental benefits plan. These plans arent actually a type of insurance because they dont actually pay for your care. Instead, as a member of your dental benefits plan, you get a set discount on any dental services you need.

Is It More Expensive To Use Dental Insurance With No Waiting Period

GEHA’s Dental Plans For 2022

It depends on the category of care you seek. For example, it is not more costly to get preventive care, as dental insurance policies with no waiting period usually provide these and pay 100%. However, if you have Basic or Major care needs, you might pay more in the first year or two than you would by year three. That’s because many policies will increase coverage the longer you subscribe. For example, many United Healthcare plans pay a smaller percentage on day one of coverage than they do a year later.

How Does Dental Insurance Work

A dental insurance policy covers expenses for checkups, routine cleanings and other dental restorative work such as fillings, implants and crowns. Many providers such as Humana, Cigna and UnitedHealthOne also offer dental, hearing and vision bundles.

Providers are regulated at the state level, meaning plan availability, benefits and rates may vary per state.

Dental coverage benefits

Dental insurance carriers divide benefits into three categories: preventive care, basic or routine care and major procedures.

  • Preventive care includes checkups , sealants and X-rays. Most providers offer 100% coverage with no waiting periods and deductibles for these procedures.
  • Basic or routine care refers to fillings, non-routine X-rays, denture repairs and simple extractions. Coverage is generally capped at 80% and beneficiaries must meet the policys deductible rate.
  • Major procedures include root canals, gum disease, surgical extractions, dentures and implants. Coverage rarely exceeds 50% after meeting the policys deductible.

Even if its technically major work, orthopedic treatment is considered a separate category for insurers. Its easier to find coverage for child orthodontia than for adults, but coverage is capped at 50% regardless of the patient’s age.

Companies also enforce a lifetime benefit limit, meaning they will only pay for braces or aligners once for the duration of the policy.

Best For Seniors: Physicians Mutual

Physicians Mutual

  • 3-month waiting period for Basic coverage

  • 12-month waiting period for Major coverage

  • No senior discount

Physicians Mutual has been around since 1902 and is based in Omaha, NE. It offers dental insurance to individuals and families, as well as life and health insurance. Per their website, A.M. Best gives Physicians Mutual top ratings for financial strength.

Physicians Mutual has three excellent plans for seniors who need dental insurance with no waiting periods. It immediately covers preventive care and basic care just three months later. One drawback is there is a 12-month waiting period for Major care. However, once that is met, the three plans cover 350 dental procedures.

Also, the programs have no annual maximums or deductibles associated with the benefits. The premium rates are affordable for seniors. For example, the range of premiums is about $30 to $47 each month in California. Moreover, Physicians Mutual’s nationwide network makes it easy for seniors to find a dentist nearby.

Why Does My Dental Insurance Have A Waiting Period

Dental insurance waiting periods help insurance companies keep costs low. Establishing a waiting period helps prevent consumers from purchasing plans only when they need extensive work they cant afford on their own, then dropping their coverage. Waiting periods for major work help encourage regular exams and help keep membership high enough for premiums to provide coverage for those insured.

What Is A Participating Dentist

A participating dentist is a general dentist or specialist who has agreed to accept negotiated fees as payment in full for covered services. Negotiated fees typically range from 30 – 45% less than the average charges in a dentists community for similar services.2 Negotiated fees refers to the fees that in-network dentists have agreed to accept as payment in full for covered services, subject to any copayments, deductibles, cost sharing, and benefit maximums. Negotiated fees are subject to change.
