Average Height By Age

Peoples growth rate changes drastically from year to year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a growth chart for girls that lets you check the average height of children and teenagers at different ages throughout adolescence.

The female growth rate kicks off around ten years old. At ten, the average female height is around 54 inches. The average 13-year-old height is 62 inches. Thats an average of eight inches in three years!

After 13, growth tends to slow down to about an inch every year. The average 14-year-old height is 63 inches. A year after that, its 64 inches the average height for 15-year-old girls.

Check out the growth chart from the CDC to see the average height at different ages throughout adolescence. And remember, its just an average. Its very common to have a height thats different from the average.

Can You Predict How Tall Your Daughter Will Be

While there isn’t an exact science that can predict how tall your children will be, there are many predictive methods that can give you a rough idea of just how tall your daughter will be when she reaches her full adult height. The easiest, and perhaps most accurate, method for predicting height is to follow the CDC’s growth chart for girls. Using various height measurements through her childhood and adolescence, you can plot her growth on the curve and see where she ends up. This is assuming she grows at the same rate throughout childhood and early adolescence, so it’s not exact.

The other method involves taking the heights of both parents and averaging them out. You take the father’s height, subtract five inches, and add that number to the mother’s height. You divide that sum by two, and the resulting number is your daughter’s predicted height, give or take a few inches in either direction. This one, thanks to genetics, is less accurate than plotting growth on the CDC chart. But it could be fun to try it out!

If you’re concerned that your daughter isn’t growing at the expected rate, you may want to discuss it with her doctor. Girls who enter puberty too early or haven’t gotten their first period by the age of 25 or 16 may experience different growth rates. Her doctor can determine if there are hormonal or other medical problems that may be delaying growth and development.

What To Do When You Get Your Period

Before you start getting periods it is good to be prepared for when it eventually comes. Hopefully you will have an opportunity to talk with your mother or sister or someone else in your family who can help you to prepare. Meanwhile here are some tips for when you do start bleeding.

  • Use sanitary products like a pad, tampon or panty liner to absorb the bleeding. Pads and liners are longs strips of cotton that you stick to your underwear. Tampons are thin cylinders of dense cotton attached to a string that you put inside your vagina. Pads, liners and tampons come in different shapes and sizes but all of them need to be changed every four to six hours to stop leakage. You can use a tampon whenever you want, you don’t have to wait until you start having sex before a tampon will go in. It may be a little hard to get it in to begin with, but you will get used to it very quickly.
  • Keep a period kit somewhere handy. This is because you might get your period unexpectedly or forget its due. Keeping some painkillers, sanitary products and a spare pair of underpants in your bag, at school or at work can be a lifesaver.
  • Enjoy life as much as possible. Its safe and often possible to do all the things you would normally do. Its also okay to have sex when you have your period, but if youre using a tampon youll need to take it out first.

What Is Menstrual Suppression

A menstrual period, or menstruation, refers to the vaginal bleeding that occurs as part of a womans monthly cycle. Periods begin once a girl has reached puberty, usually between the ages of 11 and 15 and continue until a woman reaches menopause, around the age of 51. Menstruation is the bodys way of shedding the lining of the uterus, which passes through the vagina, along with menstrual blood.

Menstrual suppression is a treatment that uses medication to reduce or stop menstrual periods. Under the care of a doctor, this is a safe option for all girls, teens and young women once they have already had at least one menstrual period.

Ways To Stop Your Period Early!

There is a formula that we use in pediatrics to estimate the size one expects a child to be, based solely on the parents heights. This is called the mid-parental height. It does not give an accurate prediction of a child s ultimate height, but does give a range, based on genetic factors. If either of the parents had health problems as a child, then this estimate may not be accurate.

The way that this formula works is that if the child is a girl, you subtract five inches from the father s height, and then average the result with the mother s height. This average is the mid-parental height, and you would expect the child to be within a few inches of this height as an adult. For a boy, you add five inches to the mother s height and then average it with the dad s.

Based on your parents heights, your mid-parental height is 5′ 1-1/2″ give or take 3 inches, so we would expect your height to be in a range from about 4′ 10″ to 5′ 4″. In other words, you should not expect to be a lot taller than you already are, but you may grow a few more inches.

What Causes Missed Periods

  • A teen girl may be fine and just a little late with regulating her periods.
  • She may have a hormone imbalance called polycystic ovary syndrome and needs to be checked for high cholesterol and diabetes.
  • She may have an ovary or thyroid problem and need hormones.
  • She may have low estrogen levels from excessive exercise or low weight, and she may be at risk for low bone mass.

Without enough estrogen, not only do menstrual cycles stop, but the body does not absorb enough calcium to build strong bones. This can result in low bone mass. Since very little bone mass is added after women are 20 years old, the teen years are very important for building the right amount of bone for a lifetime.

Everyone, teen girls especially, needs the right balance of exercise, body weight, calcium intake, vitamin D, and estrogen levels to have healthy bones.

Keeping Track Of Periods

Its good for your child to keep track of their periods with an app, calendar or diary. If your childs periods are fairly regular, an app or calendar can help your child know when their period is likely to come. This way your child can prepare for things like sleepovers, school camps or swimming carnivals.
