Screening For Colon And Rectal Cancer
Your doctor will recommend screening for colon and rectal cancer also called colorectal cancerstarting at age 45 if you dont have health problems or risk factors that make you more likely to develop colon cancer.1

Some providers may ask you to avoid corn, nuts, seeds and popcorn for at least three days before the procedure. Others might suggest a low-fiber diet for two days before the colonoscopy. The day before the procedure you will not be able to eat solid food or drink alcohol
You will be able to drink clear liquids, including water, black coffee, tea, ginger ale, apple juice, white grape juice and clear broths. You can have JELL-O® and Popsicles®, but only those that are not red, blue or purple. Drinking extra fluid will help you not become severely dehydrated.

Q: What Is Crohns Disease
Crohns disease is also an immune mediated inflammatory process. However, it can extend beyond the colon and it can penetrate through the gut lining. It can effect anywhere in the GI tract, but it has a predilection for the end of the small bowel where it meets the colon. It can also present with pain, diarrhea, weight loss, and bleeding. Treatment initially consists of pills with a timed release profile to target the end of the small bowel and colon, or to be dispersed throughout the GI tract. Steroids are sometimes used to reverse disease, but this is never a long-term solution. More potent medications include immunomodulators. Still more potent medications exist that block key inflammatory mediators and help arrest disease. Every step up in therapy brings greater likelihood of success but also carries unique risks. Surgery is a poor option but is sometimes necessary. Both gastroenterologists and surgeons do everything possible to avoid surgery.

What Exactly Does Bowel Preparation Mean
There are a few different kinds of bowel preparations, almost all of them liquid. Your doctor will tell you what kind is best for you based on your medical history and their particular preference. Some of these products are prescription-only, while others are available over-the-counter. They all have the same goal to get rid of everything in your colon by causing watery diarrhea.
The time of day or night that you will have to start drinking the solution will depend on when your procedure is scheduled. You will be asked to consume the entire amount of liquid within a specific time period. There is also something called split-dosing. In split dosing, you will be asked to drink half of the bowel preparation the night before and then stop. You will get up in the morning and do the other half of the dose in the morning, finishing up at least four hours before the procedure itself. In general, split dosing results in cleaner bowel preparations. If you are having a colonoscopy with conscious sedation or twilight, and you have not been given split dosing instructions, ask your provider if you can do the split dosing.
What’s Involved In Colonoscopy Prep
Emptying the contents of the colon is a key requirement for a successful colonoscopy. If the bowel prep isn’t up to par, polyps and lesions can be missed the colonoscopy may take longer or the whole process may need to be repeated or rescheduled, meaning another round of bowel prep.
Different medical centers recommend different ways to prepare the bowel for a colonoscopy. There are two parts: diet and drinking bowel-cleaning liquids. Here are some of the main strategies.

What Happens After The Exam
The entire procedure should take between 20 and 30 minutes. Youâll stay in a recovery room for about 30 minutes to an hour to wake up from the sedative.
You may have cramping or pass gas, but these are normal. You can eat regularly after you leave the doctorâs office.
Make sure you understand the instructions you get before you go home. You may need to avoid certain medicines, such as blood thinners, for a day or two if your doctor did a biopsy or removed any polyps.
Bleeding and puncture of the colon are rare but possible problems in a colonoscopy. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the following:
- More than a little bleeding, or bleeding that lasts a long time
- Severe abdominal pain, fever, or chills
How Do Doctors Perform A Colonoscopy
A doctor performs a colonoscopy in a hospital or an outpatient center. A colonoscopy usually takes 30 to 60 minutes.
A health care professional will place an intravenous needle in a vein in your arm or hand to give you sedatives, anesthesia, or pain medicine, so you wont be aware or feel pain during the procedure. The health care staff will check your vital signs and keep you as comfortable as possible.
For the procedure, youll lie on a table while the doctor inserts a colonoscope through your anus and into your rectum and colon. The scope inflates your large intestine with air for a better view. The camera sends a video image to a monitor, allowing the doctor to examine your large intestine.
The doctor may move you several times on the table to adjust the scope for better viewing. Once the scope reaches the opening to your small intestine, the doctor slowly removes the scope and examines the lining of your large intestine again.
During the procedure, the doctor may remove polyps and will send them to a lab for testing. You will not feel the polyp removal. Colon polyps are common in adults and are harmless in most cases. However, most colon cancer begins as a polyp, so removing polyps early helps to prevent cancer.
If your doctor finds abnormal tissue, he or she may perform a biopsy. You wont feel the biopsy.

We primarily do procedures called upper endoscopies examining the esophagus, stomach, and small intestines by way of the mouth and colonoscopies, where we examine the lining of the large intestine, colon, and rectum by way of the butt.
Change Your Diet And Clean Out Your Bowel
A health care professional will give you written bowel prep instructions to follow at home before the procedure so that little or no stool remains in your intestine. A complete bowel prep lets you pass stool that is clear and liquid. Stool inside your intestine can prevent your doctor from clearly seeing the lining.
You may need to follow a clear liquid diet for 1 to 3 days before the procedure. You should avoid red and purple-colored drinks or gelatin. The instructions will include details about when to start and stop the clear liquid diet. In most cases, you may drink or eat the following:
- fat-free bouillon or broth
- gelatin in flavors such as lemon, lime, or orange
- plain coffee or tea, without cream or milk
- sports drinks in flavors such as lemon, lime, or orange
- strained fruit juice, such as apple or white grapeavoid orange juice
- water
Different bowel preps may contain different combinations of laxativespills that you swallow or powders that you dissolve in water or clear liquids. Some people will need to drink a large amount, often a gallon, of liquid laxative over a scheduled amount of timemost often the night before and the morning of the procedure. Your doctor may also prescribe an enema.
The bowel prep will cause diarrhea, so you should stay close to a bathroom. You may find this part of the bowel prep hard however, finishing the prep is very important. Call a health care professional if you have side effects that keep you from finishing the prep.
