During a visit with your doctor, they will ask you to describe your pain, where it is located, and when it began. They may also ask you to describe what you have tried in the past to relieve the pain. For example:

  • Have you tried a sexual lubricant or more foreplay?
  • Is it painful every time you try to have sex?
  • Are there other problems associated with sex?

When Men Can Feel Your Period Pain

Is it possible for a guy to spend so much time with a woman that he starts syncing up with her menstrual cycle, getting cramps when she does, crying at Hugh Grant films, and craving the same Ben and Jerry’s flavor? According to the Sun, that’s exactly what happened to 22-year-old George Fellows. Since meeting his best friend and roommate, Amber-May Ellis, Fellows says he’s been getting the same “mysterious pains” every month for two years, around the same time Ellis starts her period. He also notes that he gets “super emotional” during that time of the month.

“I was at uni one day when they suddenly kicked in. I’m a bit of a hypochondriac so I panicked,” he told the publication. “Amber made an off-the-cuff comment saying, ‘I’m on my period at the moment, now you know how I feel.’ I didn’t think anything of it at first, but the next month, like clockwork, I got the pains again. After three months, we knew something was up.”

While I don’t doubt the pair’s platonic devotion to each other , Fellows’s story certainly does trigger my bullshit alarm. But nonetheless, I had to wonder: Can men experience menstruation by association?

Couvade syndrome is widely reported by men. Symptoms include nausea, abdominal pain, bloating, appetite changes, leg cramps, and backaches. According to Arthur Brennan, who conducted a 2005 study on the phenomenon, between 25 percent to 52 percent of all men with a pregnant partner have experienced it.

What Men Think About Menstruation

Kaitlyn Luckow

Ever since Ive started writing about menstruation, Ive had a surprising amount of men reach out to me with questions and thoughts they have about periods and menstruation. I think its so important to open up this discussion to all genders, because everyone should be educated on menstruation, not just people who experience it.

This discussion is vital in order to erase misconceptions about menstruation and could help further education throughout the world. This mentality could erase negative mentalities and improve the health for women throughout the world.

I reached out to men throughout the world to see what they think about menstruation, addressed some misconceptions that they hold, and answered questions that were asked.

What They Think About Periods

Scared About Moodiness

Some men I talked to expressed that they grew up learning that women are dangerous to be around while theyre on their period. Calling it names like Dragon Lady Week and Shark Week because of the perception that women become moody and volatile during their periods.

Granted, this is something that all men expressed that they used to think or thought growing up because of the mentality taught to them by their fathers. It seems to be a mentality that is changing.

Theyre Thankful They Dont Have To Deal With It
Blush, Blush.

All of these things need to end. With education and a willingness to talk and make mistakes, this can end.

Menstrual Cramps Last Too Long

Its normal for the bleeding during menstruation to last anywhere from two to seven days. Its not normal, however, to have bad period cramps that entire time.

Two or three days of menstrual discomfort is considered to be normal.

Cramps may start the day of or day just before the bleeding starts, but they should not continue all the way until the end of your period. They certainly shouldnt still be there after your period ends.

How Do Periods Work

Around every 23 to 35 days, the uterus develops a lining intended to nourish and protect a fertilized egg . The fertilized egg must attach itself to the lining in order to grow. When no pregnancy occurs during the cycle, the lining is shed along with nutrients, dissolved remnants of the egg, and tissue such as blood. This is what is known as menstruation, or a period.

Basically: no pregnancy = no need for uterine lining = monthly bleeding.

What Can I Do For Cramps

If cramps bother you, you can:

  • Take a pain reliever. Talk to your mom or dad or your doctor about which medicine is best for you. They can help you figure out how much to take and how often.
  • Exercise! Being physically active can ease cramps, probably because exercise releases endorphins, which are chemicals in the body that make you feel good.
  • Get warm. Try placing a warm water bottle, warm heating pad, or warm compress on your belly or take a warm bath.

If these tips dont help, talk to your parent or your doctor about other treatments.

What Do Severe Cramps Feel Like

Higher levels of prostaglandins in your body may cause more intense period cramps. Your cramps can still feel sharp or achy, but if your cramps really take a toll on your daily activities, you might have severe cramps.

Most of the time, severe period cramps start earlier in the menstrual cycle and last longer. They dont respond well to over-the-counter pain medication like ibuprofen and keep you from doing your regular daily activities, whether thats hitting the gym or concentrating at work.

Severe cramps are also usually accompanied by heavy bleeding.

If your period pain is so bad that you need to call off work, school, or other activities on a regular basis, you should speak to your doctor. The condition is not rare. But its not normal, either.

Depending on which study you look at, between 5% and 20% of women experience painful periods that interfere with their daily life.

Some countries offer a couple days off every month for menstruation. Dont misconstrue this for saying that menstruation should be so painful that you cant go about your regular life. The issue is more complex than that. Its not even clear whether these laws are good or bad.

In 2013, Russian lawmaker Mikhail Degtyaryov proposed that Russia should offer days off for menstruation. He argued that sometimes the “pain for the fair sex is often so intense that it is necessary to call an ambulance. Not exactly a realistic portrayal of menstruation.

If your pain is bad enough to call an ambulance, please call one. Those aren’t period cramps. Something much more serious is going on. In a more likely scenario, if your pain is bad enough to regularly miss work or school, make an appointment to speak to your doctor. There may be something else going on that needs treatment and/or treatment options that can soothe your discomfort.

Why Haven’t I Gotten My Period

10 symptoms of perimenopause

Perimenopause refers to the time period that begins when the ovaries begin to decline in function and continues until menopause . During this time, a woman may exhibit these symptoms that are largely due to abnormal hormonal fluctuations:

  • Irregular vaginal bleeding

Sometimes women in the very early stages of pregnancy experienced slight cramping, similar to mild menstrual cramps, right around the time that the fertilized egg implants in the uterus. This is termed âimplantation painâ and happens right around the time of the expected period.

  • Usually, there are no other symptoms at this time other than the absence of a period. Sometimes there is light spotting at the time of implantation.

Ectopic pregnancy

An ectopic pregnancy refers to a fertilized egg attaching in an abnormal location outside of the uterus , typically in the fallopian tubes.

  • A ruptured ectopic pregnancy can lead to sudden, severe sharp pains in the lower abdomen that can spread to the back.
  • Before this happens, there may be the typical symptoms of early pregnancy like
  • pain or burning with urination.

Interstitial cystitis or painful bladder syndrome

This is a condition that results from chronic inflammation of the bladder. It can cause pain at any time of the month.

  • Symptoms typically get worse when the bladder is full . It can cause pain and tenderness in the low abdomen or pelvic area. Other possible symptoms are
  • feeling an urgent need to urinate.

Appendicitis

Pain Medications Don’t Work

For those 20% who experience monthly discomfort, most can typically get relief with over-the-counter pain medications, like Advil or Tylenol . If over-the-counter medication is not enough to help you get on with your day, however, then your period cramps arent normal.

Very important side note: Some people will take more than the recommended dosage of over-the-counter pain relievers thinking that since they are over-the-counter, they are therefore harmless. Over-the-counter is not a code word for dosage-doesnt-really-matter. Dont do this. It can be extremely dangerous and even deadly.

Never take more pain medication than is indicated on the label or prescribed to you by your doctor. If recommended dosages aren’t enough, speak to your healthcare provider.

You Have Other Symptoms

Maybe youre really not sure whether your cramps are normal or not, but you also experience other related symptoms. Other worrisome symptoms may include:

  • Cramps accompanied by nausea or diarrhea
  • Pelvic pain at times beside your period
  • Spotting between cycles

To evaluate what may be wrong, your healthcare provider may suggest:

Its important to know that endometriosis can only be diagnosed with exploratory laparoscopy. It cant be ruled with ultrasound or a pelvic exam. However, laparoscopy is an invasive, surgical procedure, so your doctor may not recommend having it unless your symptoms are especially bad.

Severe abdominal or pelvic pain may indicate something more serious than your period, like an ectopic pregnancy, toxic shock syndrome, acute PID, or appendicitis.

Bloody hell this is one tortuous way to spend a day.

Men are getting a taste of what women go through on a monthly basis by using a period simulator.

Period product company Somedays has created a viral series on TikTok showing males being hooked up to a gadget that recreates menstrual symptoms.

The machine mimics the aching and painful cramps that many people experience during their menstrual cycles.

There are several levels to the machine, which contracts the muscles for wearers to feel the sensation. Level four is deemed as the standard cramp feeling and level 10 is the most unbearable.

One video with more than 20 million views and features a cowboy trying the simulator and bracing himself for the pain. The dude started sweating, saying, Im feeling it now once he got up to level four.

This is not fun, he stated. When he hit level six, he started gasping and wincing in pain. After he got to 10, he gave a breathless Yee-haw! and flinched in agony once more.

Not to mention the uncomfortable bloating, intense emotions, constipation, headache/migraine, extreme nausea, and MORE. , one wrote.

He was such a good sport, someone noted. This guy actually did really well. Usually men stop by 3 or 4.

In a , someones sweetheart boyfriend took the challenge and was able to reach stage nine before tapping out.

The man was sitting down for most of the levels until he decided to stand for number eight in the hopes that his posture might help alleviate the soreness.

How Often Does Menstruation Occur

Every persons cycle is different, but the average cycle is between 23-35 days long. A menstrual period starts with the body expelling the old uterine lining as blood. This happens when the egg the ovaries have released isnt fertilized. The menstrual period ends with the body preparing again to get pregnant by releasing an egg from the ovaries to be fertilized. Menstrual bleeding can last between three to eight days, with the heaviest bleeding occurring during the first few days.

Do Men Have Periods A Quarter Of Men Experience ‘pms Symptoms’ Due To Daily Hormonal Changes

Stomach cramps, mood swings, and hot flashes are all tell-tale signs its that time of the month for women and men. A new survey conducted by VoucherCloud found a quarter of men believe they experience monthly man periods, suffering premenstrual symptoms from cramps to food cravings.

Jed Diamond, therapist and author of The Irritable Male Syndrome, has done some exploring on the existence of the man period in the past and believes men have hormonal cycles just as women do. Contrary to popular belief, men become violent when their testosterone levels go down, where irritability, depression, and withdrawal come with a deficiency of the hormone. Testosterone levels in young men can fluctuate as much as four times daily. However, what is less clear is how these levels vary day by day and week by week.

Furthermore, 43 percent of female respondents claimed they offered special support to their partners during this time of the month. When asked how they had done so, some ways included “try and cheer him up” and “walk around on egg shells” . Out of those who didnt believe their partners had man periods, 33 percent told their partner to “man up.”

If you see a man cranky and incredibly hungry, offer him some greasy food and a beer, he may be on his man period.

At that time, the body releases chemicals called prostaglandins which cause an inflammatory response that causes the uterus to contract these are cramps. Kerala: Why Are Indian Men Screaming With Period Pain

Menstruation – and the discomforts that come with it – is still a taboo topic in many parts of India.

But a campaign in the southern state of Kerala is aiming to change that. The initiative’s organisers are taking menstruation simulators to malls and colleges in Ernakulam district to let men experience period cramps, in a bid to normalise conversation around the subject.

A recent video from the campaign showed men wincing and screaming in pain as women watched on, amused.

“That was really painful. I never want to experience that ever again,” says Sharan Nair, a social media influencer who tried the simulator at a mall.

The simulator is part of a project called Cup of Life that aims to distribute free menstrual cups and bust myths around periods. It has been launched by local lawmaker Hibi Eden from the Congress party along with the Indian Medical Association , which represents doctors.

Women’s health, especially issues related to menstruation, is an under-discussed topic in India. In many areas, women are still considered impure when they menstruate, and kept away from social and religious events, and even the kitchen.

But the campaign’s organisers are hopeful they can spark a change in Kerala, considered one of India’s most progressive states.

Lawyer Sandra Sunny, who designed the #feelthepain event, says the simulator is the “easiest way” to encourage meaningful conversations and change such attitudes.
