If Your Cycles Aren’t Very Regular
Or you’d like a more accurate picture of your ovulation, you can try one of the following techniques for pinpointing ovulation:
Track your temperature.
One of the tip-offs that ovulation has occurred is that a woman’s regular body temperature increases slightly. You can detect this “thermal shift” by taking your temperature every morning at the same time before you get out of bed. If you chart your temperature each day for a few months, you’ll probably begin to see a pattern that will help you predict when you are about to ovulate.
Most women’s temperature increases about a half a degree 24 to 48 hours after ovulation. .
Note: By the time your BBT rises, ovulation has already occurred, and there’s little time left to conceive ideally, sperm are “waiting” in the fallopian tube when the egg is released.
Use an ovulation predictor kit.
This method is more expensive than tracking your temperature, but may be more accurate. Available in drugstores, an ovulation predictor kit measures the level of luteinizing hormone in your urine. By testing your urine using the kit , you can find out when LH levels are rising, a sign that one of your ovaries is about to release an egg.
Watch for changes in your cervical mucus.
Ovulation And The Fertile Window For Beginners
If we were to look at the perfect menstrual cycle, it would be 28 days. The first day would be the day your period starts and the last day would be the day before your next period starts.
Your cycle has two phases: the follicular phase and the luteal phase.
During the follicular phase you have a period and you ovulate around day 14 .
After ovulation, you start the luteal phase, which is essentially when your body preps your cells and hormones for the next round.
This window includes the 12 to 24 hours of ovulation and the days sperm can live in the female reproductive tract. You are most fertile typically around 10 days to 2 weeks before your period, but there can be a lot of guesswork to figure out this window because it is not a one-size-fits-all approach.

Can I Get Pregnant 7 Days After My Period
Yes, it is possible to get pregnant about a week after your last menstrual period. In fact, while your chances of getting pregnant are higher at certain times, it is possible at just about any time.
The menstrual cycle starts when one period starts and ends when the next period starts. Ovulation, when an egg is released to be fertilized, occurs about halfway through the cycle, and women are most fertile three or four days prior to that.
That means that not only can you get pregnant seven days after your period, that is actually pretty close to when you are at your most fertile time. If you want to prevent pregnancy during that period, avoid unprotected sex.

Tracking Ovulation At Home
While the most accurate way to confirm ovulation is with an ultrasound or hormonal blood tests ordered by your doctor, you have options when it comes to tracking ovulation at home.
- Ovulation predictor kits . These are generally available OTC at your corner drugstore. They detect the presence of LH in your urine, which usually means you will ovulate soon.
- Fertility monitors. These are also available OTC. They track two hormones estrogen and LH to help identify your fertile window. Fertility monitors can be pricier than options that track LH only. Some monitors claim to detect 4 or more fertile days each month with 99 percent accuracy .
Always follow the manufacturers instructions to ensure youre making the best use of at-home trackers. Talk with a doctor or pharmacist to determine which of these tools is right for you.
Pinpointing Your Ovulation Date
Can any of the ovulation signs listed above give you the exact date you ovulated? Heres the bottom line: It doesnt matter. As long as you have sex every day or every other day within three to four days of your possible ovulation date, youll have had sex at the right time to conceive. In fact, research has found that it may not be possible for you even to know the exact day you ovulated.
Ultrasound can be used to determine when ovulation occurred. Researchers have compared ultrasound results to commonly used methods of ovulation tracking. They found that basal body temperature charting correctly predicted the exact day of ovulation only 43% of the time. Ovulation predictor kits, which detect the LH hormone surge that occurs prior to ovulation, may be accurate just 60% of the time.
All of this is good news. It means you dont need to stress out over having sex on the exact day before ovulation in order to conceive.
As long as you have sexual intercourse when there are possible fertile signs, or have sex frequently all month long, your odds of conceiving are good.

Track Ovulation By Temperature
After your body releases an egg, the hormone progesterone kicks in to build and maintain the lining of the uterus. It makes your body temperature go up slightly. So taking your temperature with a basal thermometer every morning before you get out of bed can help you figure out if you ovulated. You can buy these thermometers at the drugstore. They’re inexpensive, but they aren’t as accurate as other ways of monitoring fertility.

How To Track Your Cycle
Working out your fertility window can be helped by tracking your menstrual cycle. You can simply mark your periods on a calendar or try some of the many apps available online .
The average menstrual cycle is 28-35 days. Ovulation usually occurs 14 days prior to your period starting. We recommend you track two to three cycles and work out the average length of your cycle. From this you can work out the average time you are likely to ovulate.
- If your cycle is 28 days, ovulation should occur on day 14. Therefore aim to have regular intercourse from 10 days after your period has started.
- If your period is 35 days, then ovulation should occur at 21 days and intercourse should be from 17 days after your period started.
How To Calculate Your Fertile Window / How To Calculate Ovulation
To calculate your fertile window, you need to determine what day you ovulate. To do this, you need to know the length of your menstrual cycle .
The length of your menstrual cycle is the number of days from the first day of bleeding in your last period, to the first day of bleeding in your next. From this figure, subtract 14 days from the end of your current cycle to determine the approximate day you ovulate.
Remember that your best chance of success is from intercourse just before you ovulation 1-2 days before you ovulate.

How To Know When Youre Ovulating
Knowing when you ovulate can help you plan for sex at the right time and improve your chance of getting pregnant. You can keep track of your menstrual cycles on a chart, in a diary, or on a free period-tracker app on your smartphone.
To work out the length of your menstrual cycle, record the first day you start bleeding . This is day 1. The last day of your cycle is the day before your next period begins.
Some people think the menstrual cycle and a period are the same thing.
A period is when you bleed .
A menstrual cycle starts on the day when a period starts and ends the day before the next period. A cycles length is considered normal if its between 21 and 35 days. They can vary between women and from one cycle to the next.
- Working out your average menstrual cycle length
If your menstrual cycles are different lengths you can work out your average cycle length.
The number of days in a womans menstrual cycle can vary month to month. Periods are not always regular. It can be useful to work out an average cycle length, based on the length of three menstrual cycles, to estimate when youre most likely to be ovulating.
If you add the number of days in three cycles and divide the total number by three, it gives you your average cycle length.
Sarah tracked her last three menstrual cycles by counting the time from the first day of one period, to the day before the next period.
Cycle 1 was 28 days Cycle 2 was 32 days Cycle 3 was 27 days
28 + 32 + 27 = 87
What Is The Normal Period Cycle Length
Period cycle is the number of days between periods. Because it may vary from woman to woman, its important to calculate whats normal for you.
Lets say you normally have period every 30 days. This means that your period cycle length is 30 days.
The truth is, most women do have periods every 28 days. So, understanding whats normal for you is important to predict when after period you will ovulate.
To calculate period cycle length, you have to monitor or chart the first day period starts for about six months.
To check if your cycle is regular, count the number of days between periods. Though its possible your period cycle will be either longer or shorter in some months, you can tell if its regular or not.

Ovulation Test During Menstruation
LH tracking by ovulation tests can be used during menstruation. In addition, tests that track the crystallization of saliva will be indicative.
If you have a short menstrual cycle 21-23 days, then ovulation may well occur already on the 5-11th DC. It is better to start testing with the help of tests for LH from the 3rd DC, when the menstruation bleeding is already weak.
Such a large difference in the estimated date of ovulation is due to the fact that your real luteal phase length is unknown. If you know it, then it will not be difficult to calculate the date of rupture of the follicle. Tests should be taken 2 days before this day to compare the strips in dynamics.

Do You Only Ovulate For One Day
Ovulation only lasts around 1 day. The body triggers the release of an egg from the ovaries. Once that egg starts its journey towards the uterus, it only stays viable for 1 day. However, sperm can live in the uterus and fallopian tubes, the tubes that connect the ovaries to the uterus, for up to 6 days.

What Fertility Treatments Can Help When You Have Irregular Periods
If you talk to your doctor about medical assistance for getting pregnant with an irregular period, youll likely be prescribed medication to induce ovulation. One of the best and most effective ways to get pregnant with an irregular period or with a condition like PCOS is medication like Letrozole or Clomid, Dr. Conti says. These treatments make you reliably ovulate every single month as if you had a normal period.
While these medicines dont erase the underlying problem, they help your body ovulate each month that you take them. The goal is to increase the rate of pregnancy to what it would be if your cycles were regular. Sometimes thats all you need to help the sperm reach the egg and conceive. If not, treatments like in-vitro fertilization and IUI can help increase your chances of getting pregnant.Dr. Conti also recommends scheduling a preconception appointment before you actively begin trying to get pregnant so that you can prepare for what your fertility journey may entail. You can also ask any questions you may have about your cycle so that you know whether or not youll need to take some additional steps to conceive.

What Days Of Your Cycle Do You Ovulate
As weve mentioned, ovulation occurs about halfway through the average human menstrual cycle. However, when most people ask this question, they are really asking either how they can get pregnant or avoid pregnancy. The six days prior to ovulation are the fertile window. The odds increase until they peak on the last three days, including ovulation day.
That means the most fertile days might be just a few days after the end of the menstrual period. After ovulation, the chances fall, with the chances of pregnancy during period bleeding being the lowest.
However, since not everyone always follows the average cycle, figuring out the fertile window can be tough. Someone might have a naturally short menstrual cycle or a naturally longer one. The best method of determining the fertile window is by looking for physical signs of ovulation.

Determining The Best Time To Have Sex To Conceive
Unfortunately, thereâs no completely accurate method to detect that you are about to ovulate. Itâs possible for an ovulation predictor kit, body temperature charts, and cervical mucus patterns to all indicate a slightly different ovulation day.
In a study of people with regular, 28-day cycles, ovulation occurred most commonly on day 15 after the start of the last menstrual period , followed by day 16 LMP and day 14 LMP . Researchers found a 10-day spread of observed ovulation days even among a group of people with âclockworkâ cycles, and a similar variation for people whose cycles were a little longer or shorter.
Another group of researchers set out to pinpoint the most commonly fertile day in the menstrual cycle across the general populationincluding those with irregular cyclesusing menstrual period surveys and ultrasound measurements rather than ovulation signs. They found a sharp rise in the probability a person will conceive beginning at day 7 LMP, reaching a maximum probability of conception of 13% at day 15 LMP. By day 25 LMP, the statistical probability of conception is zero, according to the data.

How To Predict And Track Ovulation
If youre trying to get pregnant, you may find it helpful to track your ovulation. Even if you are not trying to conceive, monitoring your cycle may be a useful way of understanding more about your overall health, energy levels, mood changes, and when you can expect your period to start.
To track ovulation, try to keep a record of the following information:
- your menstruation dates
- descriptions of your menstrual blood
- descriptions of your cervical mucus
- your BBT readings
- physical changes, such as cramps, pain, bloating, or breast tenderness
- other relevant information, such as your mood, libido, and energy levels
You can use any calendar or journal to track ovulation. There are a number of printable templates to track your menstrual cycle available online. In addition, organizations such as the American Pregnancy Association and the provide online ovulation predictors.
Fertility charts are another option. They require you to plot your morning temperature readings on a graph, providing a handy visual of the rise in your BBT after ovulation.
Finally, there are a number of apps you can use to help you track your cycle. While these apps may help you determine when youre most likely to be fertile, they may not be able to reliably predict the day of ovulation, according to a 2018 study.
