Strange Taste In The Mouth

Signs You Are Pregnant Before Your Missed Period

Hormones could play strange games during pregnancy, and you may find yourself having a strange awkward taste in your mouth, also called Dysgeusia. You could feel like you have swallowed some unsavoury metal. This metallic taste could well be an early sign to tell you that you have started your journey to motherhood. The symptom generally disappears after the first trimester, but could last longer in some women.

What Are The Signs Of Pregnancy

For a lot of people, the first sign of pregnancy is a missed period. Most pregnancy tests will be positive by the time youve missed your period. Other early pregnancy symptoms include feeling tired, feeling bloated, peeing more than usual, mood swings, nausea, and tender or swollen breasts. Not everyone has all of these symptoms, but its common to have at least 1 of them.

Implantation Bleeding And Cramping

If you have unprotected sex during your fertile window, there is a chance that you might get pregnant. Implantation takes place when the fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus. If that happens, you may experience implantation bleeding around the same time your period is due .

Implantation bleeding is light, and you may notice just a few drops of blood in your panty or while wiping your vagina. Therefore, you may or may not notice it.

What Is Hypothalamic Amenorrhea

Hypothalamic amenorrhea is a condition where normal menstrual cycles stop due to eating too few calories, working out too much, or stress .

Aside from not getting your period, HA is a sign your body doesnt have all the resources it needs to function properly. With energy in a deficit, your body will shut down what is considers to be unnecessary functions, including your menstrual cycle.

At its root, hypothalamic amenorrhea is a condition of energy imbalance. Youre putting out more than youre taking in, and your body sees this as a stressor.Research shows stress is a powerful inhibitor of reproductive function. When our body is under chronic stress, it downregulates hormone production, including sex hormone and thyroid hormone production.

While losing your period is often the first sign something is wrong, it can lead to long-term issues down the road, including adrenal dysfunction and cortisol resistance.

What Is A Late Period

15 Early Pregnancy Symptoms Before Missed Period

If your period is late or youre wondering if youre pregnant, the days can tick by rather slowly. How long do you have to wait before taking a pregnancy test? The instructions on home pregnancy tests often talk about your missed period. What do they mean?

In the world of pregnancy testing, a missed period means you expected your menstrual bleeding to have started yesterday, and it still has not started. The day of your expected period depends on what your normal menstrual cycle looks like and when your last period started.

The menstrual cycle is the time from the first day of your period to the day before your next period starts. The average cycle is 28 days, with a pattern that looks something like this:

Some womens menstrual cycles last the same number of days every month. These women can accurately predict the day their period will start. Other women have a menstrual cycle that is a little different each month. Your period is still considered regular as long as it comes every 24 to 38 days.

Early Pregnancy Symptoms Vs Pms: Whats The Difference

Most early pregnancy symptoms before your period are strikingly similar to the side effects of PMS. However, youll only notice changes in your areolas if youre pregnant. A consistently elevated BBT and creamy vaginal discharge post-ovulation are also both relatively reliable signs of conception, but theyre certainly not foolproof.

Otherwise, the only way to know if other early pregnancy symptoms are due to a baby or PMS is to hold out until you can take a pregnancy test.

Could I Have The Symptoms Of Early Pregnancy And Not Be Pregnant

Many of the symptoms of early pregnancy overlap with other medical conditions, as well as your typical menstrual cycle. Premenstrual symptoms can be very similar to pregnancy symptoms. This can make it difficult to tell the difference. You can also miss a period without being pregnant. This can happen when you exercise in extreme amounts, lose or gain a lot of weight, or even are stressed. Breastfeeding can also cause your period to stop for a while.

The best way to know youre pregnant is to take a pregnancy test. If you have missed a period and think theres a chance you could be pregnant, consider taking a test.

What Should I Do If I Have Not Started My Period

Girls start their periods at a very variable age. So it may be that your friends have been having periods for a while but you have not. Usually this will be normal variation and nothing to worry about. Ask your doctor’s advice if:

  • You are 16 years old or older and still have no periods.
  • You are 14 years old or older and have not developed breasts or pubic hair and do not have periods.
  • You have a pain in your tummy every month but no bleeding.
  • You can feel a lump in the lower part of your tummy.
  • You have had sex without using contraception .

How Do I Know If I Have Hypothalamic Amenorrhea

If your period unexpectedly disappears, you should always talk with your doctor. Dont just assume its hypothalamic amenorrhea .

Theres no blood test or scan that can tell you for certain if you have HA. Instead, it is diagnosed through exclusion. To determine if you have HA, your doctor will first need to rule out other causes of missed periods:

  • Are you pregnant? This one is pretty self-explanatory, but it should always be ruled out first.
  • Do you have PCOS? Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is another major cause of missing periods and irregular ovulation, but its not the same as HA . PCOS is a disorder caused by excess androgens, where HA is caused by energy imbalance.
  • Are you using hormonal birth control? Some hormonal birth control methods can cause you to stop bleeding entirely, even during the placebo week. But the absence of bleeding you might have on the Pill isnt the same as HA, as HA is about the absence of ovulation, not just the absence of blood.

If you and your doctor conclude you do have hypothalamic amenorrhea, the next step is to start making shifts that will allow you to get your period back naturally.

Early Symptoms Of Pregnancy Before Missed Period

When you are eager to get pregnant, you could be closely tracking your ovulation and mating with your partner accordingly. And, you may want to know the result as soon as possible, rather than wait until you miss your period. But can you know if you are pregnant even before you missed your period?

A missed period could be the first major sign of pregnancy. But only a pregnancy test, a blood test, or an ultrasound scan may confirm your pregnancy. Although some changes begin to happen even before you miss your period, they are not accurate and may not necessarily confirm the pregnancy.

In this MomJunction post, we tell you how pregnancy symptoms vary from PMS symptoms, the possible symptoms of pregnancy before a missed period, and whether you can rely on them to confirm pregnancy.

How Soon Can You Tell If You Are Pregnant

Most health care providers recommend that you wait until the first day of your missed period to take a pregnancy test, because taking a test too soon after conception can lead to a false-negative result. However, some tests are more sensitive than others and can be taken as soon as 7 to 12 days after conception. The most precise way to determine pregnancy is to take a blood test to measure your level of hCG.

How Soon Can I Take A Pregnancy Test

You should wait at least one to two weeks after you have sex to take a home pregnancy test. That is the earliest the test will detect levels of human chorionic gonadotropin , a hormone produced during pregnancy.

If you take a test too early, it may not yet be able to detect hCG. If possible, you should wait and test the week after you miss your period.

After getting a positive home pregnancy test, see a doctor and let them know. They will be able to confirm the pregnancy and discuss next steps in your prenatal care.

If You Want To Get Your Period Back Dont Do This

After youve been diagnosed with hypothalamic amenorrhea, your doctor might suggest starting hormonal birth control pills.

Im just going to be honest: this makes absolutely no sense.

First of all, the hormonal birth control works by stopping ovulation, but if you have HA, youre already not ovulating.

All the Pill might be able to do is give you a monthly pill bleed, which is not the same as a true period caused by ovulation, and doesnt have the same health benefits.

And even if you do get a pill beed, it doesnt mean your HA is resolved. Remember, HA is caused by an energy imbalance. Taking hormonal birth control does nothing to fix the root cause of HA: the energy imbalance.

If youre struggling to get your period back after the pill, check out How to Stop Taking Birth Control .
