Dont Assume The Worst

Can you be pregnant and still get your period? – Dr. Suhasini Inamdar

While bleeding during pregnancy can sometimes signal a serious problem, it may also be innocuous and result from minor conditions. Try to think positive until you get evaluated by a medical professional. Bleeding in pregnancy is scary, but it’s also common, says Dr. White. Many pregnancies that have bleeding will develop normally, so while you should have an evaluation from your doctor or midwife, try to believe them when they say that everything looks good and will likely be fine.

Exercise Or Lack Of Body Fat

You may be an athlete who is neither over- nor underweight . However, its not your weight that really impacts your reproductive cycleits the amount of fat.

Athletes may have a high percentage of muscle and a low percentage of body fat. This can cause their menstrual cycles to be irregular or even stop completely. Excessive exercise can also cause your periods to become irregular or stop.

Bleeding During Early Pregnancy

If youve had bleeding early in your pregnancy, youre not alone. Many other pregnant women have early bleeding, too. And in most cases, nothing is wrong. But your healthcare provider still needs to know about it. They may want to do tests to find out why youre bleeding. Call your provider if you see bleeding during pregnancy. Tell your provider if your blood is Rh negative. Then they can figure out if you need anti-D immune globulin treatment.

What Are The Causes Of Abdominal And Back Pain

Some of the aches and pains experienced during pregnancy are thought to be due to hormonal changes. Large amounts of the hormone progesterone are produced, which are needed to sustain pregnancy. In addition to this, progesterone acts on the muscles, ligaments and joints causing them to become slacker and more flexible. This hormonal effect is thought to be responsible for some of the stitch like pains that some women experience in the lower part of the tummy and in some cases this can be quite severe. The same hormones can be responsible for constipation during pregnancy this can also cause abdominal pain.

The enlarging womb is made up of layers of muscles and is held in place in the pelvis by supporting ligaments. As the womb expands to accommodate the developing baby, it can pull on the ligaments and muscles, to cause these growing pains.

The backache that some women get in early pregnancy is also thought to be due to a hormonal effect, and the supporting muscles are softer.

Abdominal and/or backache can also be a sign of a urine infection. This may also cause burning or stinging when passing urine and the need to pass urine more frequently. You must inform your doctor of these symptoms, so that a urine test can be obtained and treatment given if needed.

When Should You See A Fertility Doctor

Can You Still Get Your Period While Pregnant

Most heterosexual couples should wait one year before seeing a fertility doctorbut in some cases, its best to make an appointment sooner rather than later. If youre 35 or older, you should see a fertility specialist after six months of trying without success, Dr. Chen says. And if youre younger and have irregular periods or a history of sexually transmitted infections , ectopic pregnancy, pelvic inflammatory disease , or other health issues that may affect fertility or pregnancy, Dr. Chen says its a good idea to seek out a specialist right away.

Also important to note: When a couple has a difficult time getting pregnant, they shouldnt be so quick to blame the woman. From day one, couples need to think it could be the woman, the man, both, or simply unexplained infertility, says Dr. Chen. About half of infertility issues have to do with the woman, 40 percent with the man, and the other 10 percent is both or neither. The best thing, she adds, is for both partners to be assessed to know for sure.

Is Spotting Normal During Pregnancy

Non-period bleeding occurs during pregnancy for various reasons. It’s important to know the difference between spotting and bleeding. Spotting is a few drops of blood every now and then on your underwear, but not enough to cover a panty liner. Bleeding, on the other hand, is a heavier blood flow for which you’ll need a liner or pad to prevent the blood from soaking your clothes.

Some spotting in early pregnancy is normal, and happens in 15 to 25 percent of pregnancies. The cervix may bleed more easily in pregnancy because more blood vessels are developing there. Spotting may happen in the 10 to 14 days after conception when the fertilized egg implants in the lining of the uterus. This is known as “implantation bleeding.

Other reasons for spotting during pregnancy include:

  • Having a Pap smear or vaginal exam
  • Vaginitis or a sexually transmitted infection

Always call your provider if you experience bleeding or spotting during pregnancy. It could be a sign of something more serious, such as an infection, placenta problems, impending miscarriage, or an ectopic pregnancy, which can be life-threatening.

If you want to become pregnant tuning into your menstrual cycle and understanding whats going on in your body can really help you. Here are my top tips:

  • Get to know your cycle and when ovulation is likely to occur Keeping track of your menstrual cycle is always a good thing. It not only prepares you for your period appearing but it also means you can figure out when you are likely to ovulate. Try keeping a diary for a few months so you can calculate the length of your cycle. You can also buy an ovulation test which can be more accurate. Take note of any symptoms you experience around the time of your period too as this could signal a hormone imbalance. A hormone imbalance could affect ovulation and your chances of falling pregnant

For most women, miscarriage is a very sad and upsetting experience.

Experiences of miscarriage vary. In some cases, there may be only very slight spotting, in other cases bleeding may stop and start or heavier bleeding with clots and cramping period type pains can occur. Sometimes there may be no bleeding at all.

What Next After Ovulation

Can You Get Pregnant While On Your Period

Even if the egg hasnt been fertilised, the same processes occur in a womans body. Its all about preparing for conception, even if it didnt happen. The corpus luteum is formed from the empty follicle where the egg was released. The corpus luteum secretes oestrogen and progesterone. These hormones help to build up the lining of the uterus so its ready to receive the fertilised egg.

If fertilisation has occurred, the egg finds its way to the uterus,- there the lining has become thick and covered in mucous. This helps the zygote to be supported until the placenta takes over.

If the egg has not been fertilised, the egg still travels along the fallopian tube into the uterus. Over a day or so the egg dissolves and is absorbed by the womans body. The corpus luteum begins to dissolve after around 14 days. The levels of progesterone and oestrogen drop and a signal is sent for menstruation to begin.

After a woman ovulates and before she menstruates, her basal body temperature stays slightly higher than normal. After ovulation the cervical mucous changes again from being less clear and slippery to thicker.

Spotting Not Period During Pregnancy: Causes

The most frequent cause of spotting is the corpus luteum failure. Another one is a urinary tract infection then, the blood on toilet paper doesnt come from the birth canal. Another issue is the cervical ectropion, erroneously referred to by many gynaecologists as cervical erosion which is a different disease. Cervical ectropion is the spreading of the glandular cells to the outer layer of the cervix , which creates an impression of lesions on the cervix. Erosion, on the other hand, is a tissue defect in the cervical lining. Sometimes the cause of bleeding during pregnancy are previously undiagnosed haemorrhoidal varices. Each and every one of the health conditions mentioned above require an immediate consultation with a doctor. Even if we suspect that the causes of spotting lie in microdamage resulting from a gynaecological examination, itd be better to talk about it with a specialist.

The Uterine Lining Is Expelled Through Bleeding

If no fertilized egg implants in the uterus within the following days, progesterone levels decrease. Since no new life has been created, the nutrients contained within the endometrium are not needed. Consequently, the endometrium, the lining of the uterus, is excreted in the form of blood and small pieces of tissue.

Menstrual bleeding is usually heavier than any breakthrough bleeding.

The period of time between ovulation and menstruation is called the luteal phase.

During this time a fertilised egg will implant, or the body will prepare for the next menstrual period.

After ovulation, progesterone levels begin to rise.

This reaches a peak around 10 days after ovulation.

If shes not pregnant, progesterone levels will begin to drop.

Again, its difficult to tell the difference between PMS symptoms and early pregnancy symptoms.

This is because in early pregnancy, the increase in progesterone will start to cause stronger symptoms such as mood swings, food cravings and tiredness.

The change in hormones, however, can also cause the same symptoms in a woman who isnt pregnant.

Can You Really Get Your Period While Pregnant

The short answer is no. Your period, by definition, only occurs after you ovulate, and you cannot ovulate when you are pregnant.

During the first half of your cycle, your uterine lining thickens in preparation for a possible pregnancy. After ovulation, your progesterone levels increase, maintaining your uterine lining.

If you dont get pregnant, progesterone levels drop after about two weeks, and your lining begins to shedthis is your period.

If the egg hasbeen fertilized, and if it successfully implants in your uterine lining, then it will start secreting the hormone hCG, or human chorionic gonadotropin. This hormone signals to your body to keep your uterine lining intact. You may still experience some form of bleeding or spotting, but, by definition, it is not your period.
