What Do Period Delay Tablets Do
Period delay tablets are a treatment used to stop your period for a set amount of time . Period delay tablets are not contraceptives, so you cant use them to protect against pregnancy.
Theres 2 main types of period delay tablet available in the UK:

Norethisterone 5mg

Medroxyprogesterone 10mg
Both of these types of period delay tablets use a version of the hormone progesterone. This hormone is used by your body to help time your periods. Basically when the level of progesterone in your body drops, thats the signal to start another period. If youre taking progesterone tablets then you trick your body into waiting a little longer before starting the next period.
Norethisterone is licensed specifically for period delay, but medroxyprogesterone technically isnt. This doesnt mean medroxyprogesterone isnt safe, though. From a doctors point of view theyre both safe to use for period delay.
Downsides Of Delaying Your Period
Some of the natural methods for delaying a period can cause side effects. Lemon juice and ACV may irritate sensitive tissues in your mouth and throats. They can also weaken enamel on your teeth. Gelatin and gram lentils may cause bloating and discomfort in your stomach.
Both natural and chemical remedies for delaying a period may not work. If they dont, you could have a period anyway. Irregular bleeding or spotting might also happen, even when theres not a full period.
Do Natural Remedies Work
Limited evidence is available to support the use of natural remedies, such as shepherds purse or yarrow , to delay a period.
Other nonmedicinal factors can also affect a period. Functional hypothalamic amenorrhea is a disorder that affects hormones called gonadotropins, which affect periods. People with functional hypothalamic amenorrhea do not get a period.
Some female athletes experience functional hypothalamic amenorrhea and other menstrual disorders. Approximately of females who regularly exercise experience minor changes in their cycle, and 30% lose their period.
Other factors that can cause functional hypothalamic amenorrhea are stress and weight loss.

Usual Adult Dose For Abnormal Uterine Bleeding

Is It The Same As Taking The Combined Pill
Not really. If you are taking norethisterone for the purpose of delaying your period, this may not be at the same dose used in contraception. Also, the combined pill contains the hormone oestrogen. That being said, people who use the combined pill for birth control can also delay their periods depending on which type they are taking. Continuous-use options mean you are taking hormonal birth control constantly, with no breaks between packs. Without breaks, youre unlikely to have any bleeding, and therefore can avoid having a period.
Extended-use options mean you would normally have a break between packs, which is when your period would come. By taking the next pack immediately after the first, you can delay your period for as long as a month.
Newer evidence suggests that you dont necessarily need a pill-free interval, like you used to with traditional versions of the combined pill that advise you to mimic your menstrual cycle and have a week off every month. What Are The Benefits Of Taking Minipills
The benefits of minipills can include:
- No interference with intimacy
- Menstrual bleeding may be reduced or stopped
- Can be taken even if certain health conditions prevent you from taking other types of birth control
- Can be used immediately after giving birth if not breastfeeding
- If breastfeeding, wait 3 weeks after delivery if also giving formula wait 6 weeks after delivery if only breastfeeding
- No effect on ability to become pregnant in the future after stopping usage
Delaying Your Period Often
It is not recommended to take Norethisterone regularly. If you often want to delay your period, your options include taking the combined contraceptive pill back to back or considering an intrauterine system . An IUS can work for up to 5 years and most women get lighter, less painful and often stop. After 12 months most users only have a light bleed for one day per month and about 1 in 5 users have no bleeding at all.

Why Is This Medication Prescribed
Norethindrone is used to treat endometriosis . Norethindrone is also used to treat abnormal periods or bleeding and to bring on a normal menstrual cycle in women who menstruated normally in the past but have not menstruated for at least 3 months and who are not pregnant or experiencing menopause . Norethindrone is in a class of medications called progestins. It works by stopping the lining of the uterus from growing and by causing the uterus to produce certain hormones.
Norethindrone is also used to prevent pregnancy. Norethindrone is sold under different brand names and is taken in smaller amounts when it used to prevent pregnancy. This monograph does not include information on the use of norethindrone to prevent pregnancy. If you are taking norethindrone to prevent pregnancy, read the monograph entitled Progestin-Only Oral Contraceptives.
How Are Minipills Taken
Minipills come in packs of 28 pills. As soon as you get the pills you can begin to take them. Or, take the first pill soon after your next period begins.
Take a minipill once a day at the same time each day. When you finish a pack of pills, take a pill from a new pack the next day.
Once you start, dont go a day without taking the minipill. If you forget to take a pill by more than 3 hours, take a pill as soon as possible. Also, use another method of contraception for the next 2 days. If you become ill within 3 hours of taking the minipill, keep taking the pills. However, use backup contraception until 2 days after you stop being ill.
Follow your doctors directions and the prescription label carefully. Ask questions if you do not understand the dosage.

Is There Anyone Who Should Avoid Taking Norethisterone
“Norethisterone is safe for the majority of women,” Wilson says. “It should not be used for women who have suffered with liver tumours, breast cancer, a history of jaundice during pregnancy, and severe vascular disease.”
You should avoid taking the medication if you are pregnant or think you could be, if you are breastfeeding, if you have abnormal vaginal bleeding that hasnt been investigated by a doctor, or if you have a known, suspected or past history of genital or breast cancer .
Those who have recently had angina, a heart attack or a stroke caused by a blood clot should also avoid taking norethisterone.

“Women being prescribed 5 mg of norethisterone to postpone menstruation could be exposed to 20-60 mcg of ethinylestradiol a day, which is equivalent to the amount found in two combined contraceptive pills,” she says. “Care should be taken when prescribing these doses of norethisterone in women with contra-indications to the combined pill, especially women presenting with risk factors for venous thromboembolism.”

How To Use Norethindrone
Read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist before you start using this product and each time you get a refill. The leaflet contains very important information on when to take your pills and what to do if you miss a dose. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually once daily. Pick a time of day that is easy for you to remember, and take your pill at the same time each day.
Taking this medication after your evening meal or at bedtime may help if you have stomach upset or nausea with the medication. You may choose to take this medication at another time of day that is easier for you to remember. No matter what dosing schedule you use, it is very important that you take this medication at the same time each day, 24 hours apart.
It is best to begin taking this medication on the first day of your menstrual period. If you begin taking it on any other day, use an additional form of non-hormonal birth control for the first 48 hours to prevent pregnancy until the medication has enough time to work.
Continue taking one tablet every day. After taking the last tablet in a pack, start a new pack the next day. There is no break between packs, and you do not take any “reminder” tablets . Your periods may be irregular, or heavier/lighter than usual. You may also have vaginal bleeding between periods. Do not stop taking your pills if this happens.
What Are The Side Effects Of Taking Norethisterone Tablets
You must be prescribed norethisterone, to ensure it is safe for you to take. As with any medication, side effects are possible and they can vary from person to person and in severity.
Seek medical help right away if you have symptoms of:

- a blood clot in the lungs or brain

When Do You Get Period On Norethindrone
Vaginal bleeding of various amounts may occur between your regular menstrual periods during the first 3 months of use. This is sometimes called spotting when slight, or breakthrough bleeding when heavier. If this should occur, continue with your regular dosing schedule. The bleeding usually stops within 1 week.
What Should I Know About Storage And Disposal Of This Medication
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture .

Yep if you want to go through your GP to get period delay tablets you can. Youll need to make a usual appointment and your GP will talk you through your options and prescribe the best treatment for you. Then you can take the prescription to get filled at most pharmacies.
Full price or NHS prescription? norethisterone for period delay is not a blacklisted medication which means a GP can give you an NHS prescription for it. But, not all GPs will definitely do this. If your GP does give you an NHS prescription then you will only have to pay the flat NHS prescription charge. How Long Should You Take Norethindrone
If you take norethindrone for menstrual disorders or abnormal vaginal bleeding: You will most likely take the medicine for only 5 to 10 days. Vaginal bleeding will occur 3 to 7 days after your last dose. If you take norethindrone for endometriosis: Norethindrone is usually taken daily long-term for several months.
