How Far Along Am I When I Miss My Period

Dating Pregnancy Using Ultrasound

How do I know I am pregnant before my missed period?

Ultrasound in the first trimester is the most accurate method of dating pregnancy. During the scan, baby is measured and the age of pregnancy is estimated by comparing babys size against recorded averages. If there is a significant difference between gestational age according to LMP and gestational age according to the ultrasound, you may be given a new gestational age and due date based on the ultrasound measurements.

Your pregnancy may also be dated by ultrasound measurement if an LMP formula was not appropriate for your pregnancy for any reason. LMP formulas are not suitable in several situations including the following: LMP is not known or is not certain, birth control pills were taken in the two months before LMP, the menstrual cycle is irregular, you are carrying multiples .

Although the age of pregnancy based on ultrasound measurements is more accurate than the age of pregnancy based on LMP, both are estimates and not definitive statements.

How Soon Can I Take A Pregnancy Test

A missed menstruation cycle is one of the earliest signs of pregnancy. Thats why we usually recommend waiting until youve missed your period before taking a pregnancy test. If you cant wait that long and you know the day of your last period we can calculate possible conception and your pregnancy due date.

Treatments For A Late Period And Pregnancy

In general, if youve missed a period and you know youre not pregnant, you dont need specific treatment or care. However, if you were having a regular cycle and youve stopped, if youre experiencing bleeding at unexpected times, if its been more than 45 days since your last period, and if you have additional symptoms that point to other concerns, your doctor will likely look into treatment options. Depending on the cause, your doctor may prescribe hormone therapy like birth control pills or other medication, or they might be able to suggest lifestyle changes to help you have a regular period cycle.

If your late period is a sign of pregnancy, your doctor can help you come up with a treatment plan to be sure you receive the proper care and regular checkups throughout your pregnancy.

How Far Along Am I Four Ways To Figure Out How Pregnant You Are

Youre itching to know when your little one will arrive. Heres how to calculate how far you are in your pregnancy.

Its a question youll hear over and over until youre holding a baby in your arms: When are you due? Everyone wants to know that magic date, and youre probably more than a little curious about how far along you are, too. Your due date may become a beacon or a deadline , but its important to remember that your due date will only ever be an estimate of the week youll give birth .

That said, theres one big reason why an accurate estimate is important: in case of complications. If a woman goes into labour early, then we really want to know how far along she is, as best as we can tell, says Carol Scurfield, medical director of the Womens Health Clinic in Winnipeg. A week can make a big difference as far as the health of the baby is concerned.

Symptoms Of A Late Period And Pregnancy

The symptoms of a late period will be obvious to many women who menstruate regularly. If you were expecting your period, and it doesnt begin, youll know its late. Not all periods arrive like clockwork, and its very normal for periods to occur on a slightly different schedule. Pregnancy isnt the only thing that can cause a late or skipped period. But if youre wondering whether your missing period might mean youre pregnant, you can look for other early symptoms of pregnancy. During the first 8 weeks of pregnancy, many women experience:

1. Fatigue

During the first trimester , your body produces large amounts of a hormone called progesterone. This can make you feel sleepy. Even during the first week after conception, you may feel more tired than usual.

2. Spotting

Implantation bleeding is one of the earliest signs of pregnancy. It is very light bleeding, often called spotting, that happens as a result of the fertilized egg implanting to the uterine wall. Implantation is usually 6 to 12 days after conception, or the moment the egg is fertilized by a sperm.

Some women also have mild abdominal cramps during implantation. Other women dont notice any symptoms with implantation.

3. Breast Changes

You may see changes in your breasts as early as 1 to 2 weeks after conception. Your breasts may be swollen and tender to the touch. You may have soreness or a feeling of fullness in your breasts.

4. Headaches

5. Missed Period

6. Nausea

What Happens During Week 3

The fertilized egg moves down your fallopian tube and divides into more and more cells. It reaches your uterus about 34 days after fertilization. The dividing cells then form a ball that floats around in the uterus for about 23 days.

Pregnancy begins when the ball of cells attaches to the lining of your uterus. This is called implantation. It usually starts about 6 days after fertilization and takes about 34 days to be complete.

Pregnancy doesnt always happen, even if an egg is fertilized by a sperm. Up to half of all fertilized eggs pass out of your body when you get your period, before implantation is complete.

Due Date As A Reference Point

Generally, the point within the 37 to 42-week window at which the baby is born is not a cause for concern. Babies born between 37-39 weeks, 39-41 weeks, and 41-42 weeks are considered early term, full-term, and late-term, respectively. Under normal circumstances, babies born within any of these ranges can be healthy, though full-term babies generally have better outcomes.2 Babies born before 37 weeks are considered preterm, or premature, while those born after 42 weeks are postterm. These ranges are important as a reference for doctors to determine whether or not any action is necessary. For example, if a woman goes into labor too early at 33 weeks, doctors may stop labor to avoid a preterm baby that can have a host of health issues due to underdevelopment. Conversely, if a woman has not gone into labor after 42 weeks, doctors may induce labor. One possible complication of allowing the pregnancy to proceed beyond 42 weeks is that the placenta, which is responsible for providing nutrition and oxygen to the baby, can stop functioning properly, while the baby continues growing , which would eventually lead to a point in the pregnancy where the baby can no longer be adequately supported.3

Why Is Pregnancy Calculated From Your Last Period

Why start the clock on pregnancy before sperm even meets egg ? The LMP is simply a more reliable day to date a pregnancy from. Even if youre a master of cervical mucus and are sure about the day you ovulated as well as the day you had sex, you probably cant pinpoint the exact moment of conception.

    Diabetes And Thyroid Disease

Jay M. Berman, M.D., FACOG, chief of gynecological services at Detroit Medical Center’s Harper Hutzel Hospital and professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Wayne State University, says other issues such as diabetes and thyroid disease may be to blame.

According to the US Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health, thyroid disease can cause problems with your menstrual period because thyroid hormones help control your period. Therefore, unbalanced thyroid hormone can cause your period to be irregular.

In addition, some studies have found a link between type 1 diabetes and early menopause. Researchers believe this occurs because this type of diabetes causes premature vascular aging and, in turn, ovarian aging. As you reach early menopause, your periods may be late and irregular.

With most current pregnancy test kits, hCG can be detected in the urine as early as 3-4 days after implantation, though it often takes longer. If you are pregnant, on the day you miss your period about 74% of HPTs will be positive. So a negative pregnancy test is normal in about 26% of all pregnancies, and you may have to retest until you know the most accurate results. At 10+ days after the missed period, a negative HPT result makes pregnancy unlikely. Positive pregnancy test results can show up any time before or after a missed period.

    How To Calculate In Weeks

To calculate how many weeks you are, start by taking note of the first day of your last period on a calendar, or your LMD . Every 7 days from that first day counts as 1 week in your pregnancy.

For example, if the first day of the last period was March 11 and you recently had a positive pregnancy test, your first day of pregnancy is March 11 . If March 11 was day 1, then March 18 will mark week 1 of your pregnancy. April 16, for example is calculated as 1 week and 1 day of your pregnancy, and you will have been in your second month.

Calculation is done this way because the exact fertilization day is difficult to determine. Sperm cells can survive in the woman’s body for up to 7 days, and can fertilize the egg and initiate the pregnancy on any of these days.

Normal Cause Of A Missed Period During The First Year

    • Skipping periods is common during the first 1 to 2 years after they start. This is due to not releasing an egg each month.
    • This is most likely the cause if less than 2 years since the first period
    • Has missed periods in the past or has had only 1 or 2 periods
    • Otherwise healthy
    • No signs of pregnancy such as breast tenderness, breast swelling or nausea

I Dont Know When I Ovulated Is There Still A Way To Get A More Accurate Due Date

Yes: you can get a more accurate due date with a dating ultrasound, which typically happens at one of your first pregnancy appointments. Since embryos grow at a very predictable rate, an early ultrasound is a highly accurate way of measuring how many weeks pregnant you truly are.

If your LMP-estimated due date is very different from your dating scan-estimated due date, your doctor may express concern. Lets say you ovulated on day 25 of your cycleabout a week and a half later than the textbook day 14. If your doctor schedules your first ultrasound for six weeks after your LMP, it may be too early to even see a heartbeat. Based on when you ovulated, this is normal and not cause for concern: your embryo is simply a week and a half younger than someone who ovulated on day 14 of her cycle.

As long as your pregnancy continues to progress at a normal rate, your doctor will probably adjust your due date based on the dating ultrasound.
