How Do They Work

Theyre designed to have multiple layers to absorb menstrual waste whilst conforming to the body to prevent leaks. They have a soft outer layer for comfort, a core absorbency layer, and multiple layers made with materials like merino wool. This makes them anti-odour, anti-microbial, and anti-bacterial. They are also made with sustainable materials, are recyclable, long lasting, and they do not contain PFAs or harmful substances.

Should You Wash Period Underwear On Gentle

At this point, you likely know that it’s recommended to wash everyday underwear on “delicate” or “gentle.” But does that same rule apply to period underwear, which are heavily soiled? While Wang suggests looking on the manufacturer’s site for specific care instructions and information, in general, yes, period underwear should still be washed as “delicates.”

“Because period underwear is designed to wick, absorb, and hold liquids, it is constructed of several different layers of fabrics with different properties. These layers and fabric types can vary between brands, but to keep the garment in good condition, treat period underwear as ‘delicates’ and wash them in mesh garment bags, cold water, and avoid high-temperature machine drying.”

Why Make The Switch

If youre curious about why you should make the switch, there are many reasons. If you are looking for a more comfortable choice that allows you to free-bleed without worrying about pads crinkling or bunching up, these could be a great solution. If you are not comfortable with products that are inserted like tampons or menstrual cups, or if you want to wear them without worry, specially designed period underwear may be the best choice for you. They can be a very useful alternative, and are also sustainable, as well as costing less in the long run over traditional, disposable period products. On top of all that the underwear and packaging are all recyclable as well.

The Detergent To Use To Wash Period Underwear

Period Underwear: How Do I Wash Them? KORA MIKINO. EU

Many brands do not recommend washing period underwear with stain removers, fabric softener or strong, harsh detergents, According to a Modibodi care page, these products break “down the hi-tech function of our garments and also reduces the durability of the fabrics and trims, so they won’t last as long.”

It’s also worth noting that some detergents, especially those made with fragrance, can cause vaginal irritation. If you’re getting frequent infections or are dealing with discomfort, check in with your ob-gyn for advice.

When in doubt, go with a mild, fragrance-free detergent or research exactly what type of formula each brand suggests prior to washing.

Who Can Wear Period Underwear

Anyone can wear period underwear. In fact, youll find theyre so comfortable you may want to wear them even when you arent on your period. Period underwear work well for:

  • First-timers. Period underwear are a great solution for younger users just starting their period journeys. Period undies are comfortable, lightweight, and less invasive than tampons or menstrual cups.
  • Seasoned pros. Even if youve been wearing the same brand of tampons for decades, period underwear can be a great solution for you. Period underwear are great alone or used as backup on especially heavy days or even overnight. Youll find theyre more absorbent than a standard pantyliner or regular pad. They also provide the ultimate in period care comfort, especially the last few days of your period when your flow is too light to use a tampon comfortably.
  • People not on their period. Period underwear are super comfortable, even if you arent on your period. For the days before your period or during ovulation when you may experience an increase in vaginal discharge, period panties are a great, reusable alternative to pantyliners and pads.
  • New mamas. After giving birth, youre going to need absorbent pads or undies for a few weeks. Period underwear are a great alternative to the hospital issue mesh beauties.

Period underwear are so much like the underwear you wear daily, youll find yourself grabbing them even when you dont need them for actual absorbency.

Reduce The Amount Of Blood

Firstly, period underwear can help to reduce the amount of blood and menstrual fluid that leaks onto your clothes. This can be extremely beneficial if you are worried about leaks and stains on your clothing. Period underwear can also help to reduce cramping and discomfort during your period. Additionally, they can provide a feeling of security and peace of mind, knowing that you are less likely to experience any leaks or accidents. This is especially helpful if you have a heavy flow.

The Period Company: A Brief Review

The Period Company is a gender-inclusive, community-minded, affordable source for period underwear.

There are other well-known period underwear brands, such as Thinx and Knix.

But The Period Company is what I have the most experience with, and thats what Im drawing from in general for this review of period underwear.

I have four pairs of The Heavy Period. Bikini, and I love them! Ive also got my eyes on The Boxer Period., a slightly more expensive but seemingly worth it pair of period boxers.

As a previous pad-user, switching to period underwear wasnt too big a change. I never used tampons, so period undies are pretty close to my comfort zone.

Admittedly, I have pretty light-to-average flow. So, while I might be able to get away with using only one or two pairs of period underwear on my heaviest days, that might not be the case for others.

A potential downside to period underwear, particularly for those with heavy flow, is the hassle of having to change underwear throughout the day. This could especially become complicated if youre at work or school.

But, really, its not much different from changing a pad or tampon every few hours, or emptying a menstrual cup. The only addition is youll have to remove a few layers of clothing, since youre taking that extra step of changing underwear.

Now, onto the big question that creates hesitancy in some potential period underwear users:

How do you wash them?!

These are the crème de la crème of period underwear for tweens and teens.

  • Absorbency: 1 to 3 teaspoons
  • Pros: seamless, comfortable, affordable
  • Cons: standard gusset length doesnt offer extra back or front protection

Knixteen is Knixs teen-friendly line, and its awesome. Word has it they really do let you move and do your thing, all while looking cute.

The panties are seamless and insanely comfortable so you can wear them under anything. Based on reviews, theyre easy to wash and dry fast.

The absorbent gusset is roughly the same length as a regular liner, which can be a pro for some, but not for overnight protection if you sleep on your back.

  • Absorbency: 2 to 3 tampons worth
  • Pros: affordable, available in different absorbencies
  • Cons: some users say they can feel a bit bulky when soaked

Yay for options! Modibodi also has a line of cute, comfy period underwear for younger menstruators.

They look and feel like regular underwear and come in moderate to heavy absorbency. This is especially important because puberty often means all-over-the-place periods with ever-changing flows.

Theyre mainly made of organic cotton so theyre super breathable.

We recommend using a laundry detergent that is free of bleach, dyes, and fragrances. This will help to avoid any irritation or skin sensitivities. Avoid conditioner as well, as this can cause the fabric to become less absorbent.

Keep Panties Clean During Period

Oh yes that pandora’s box of keeping your panties clean on your period, well the truth of the matter is its a near impossibility for most women.

Women who are lucky to have light period while never experiencing heavy flows can do one better and wear thongs on her period without any staining at all.

But attempting to wear anything else other than period panties for others is a no goer.

So if you suffer with heavy flows continue to wear the larger sanitary towels as you always do, but consider changing your underwear regularly.

If you only suffer with light periods then you can help prevent the stains reaching your underwear by doubling up with a tampon – that is if you can wear tampons.

However the wearing of only tampons does offer some risks with staining as the leak can pass through, so again double up by wearing a tampon with a pad this time.

If your period-absorbing underwear accidentally goes through the dryer, don’t stress! Thinx can take a tumble or two in a dryer without affecting their integrity. To prolong their lifespan, however, we recommend steering clear of the dryer for the most part. The heat from dryers or irons will hurt the elasticity of the underwear, which is what prevents leaks. How To Actually Wash Period Underwear

There are plenty of product options for folks who get periods, and while none of them can actually make you feel as perfectly-comfortable as when you aren’t having your period, there are some that people absolutely swear by. From menstrual cups to good old fashioned pads and tampons, whatever helps you feel clean and protected is generally considered welcome relief. Another such product that some have adopted into their monthly routines are period panties, which are meant to look and feel like everyday underwear while having the power to absorb the menstrual flow . While some prefer to wear period panties only on lighter flow days , others like wearing them all throughout their period as a layer of backup protection, even while using other absorbance products like tampons.

And while their reusable nature makes them more environmentally friendly than disposable products, the fact that you don’t just toss them out when you’re done using them means it’s really really important that you clean them thoroughly and properly to protect both your health and the longevity of the panties.
