Do Women Ovulate Before Or After Period

How To Know When Youre Ovulating

When Do Women Ovulate | Ovulation Symptoms and When Does Ovulation Occur After Period

Knowing when you ovulate can help you plan for sex at the right time and improve your chance of getting pregnant. You can keep track of your menstrual cycles on a chart, in a diary, or on a free period-tracker app on your smartphone.

To work out the length of your menstrual cycle, record the first day you start bleeding . This is day 1. The last day of your cycle is the day before your next period begins.

  • Some people think the menstrual cycle and a period are the same thing.

A period is when you bleed .

A menstrual cycle starts on the day when a period starts and ends the day before the next period. A cycles length is considered normal if its between 21 and 35 days. They can vary between women and from one cycle to the next.

  • Working out your average menstrual cycle length

If your menstrual cycles are different lengths you can work out your average cycle length.

The number of days in a womans menstrual cycle can vary month to month. Periods are not always regular. It can be useful to work out an average cycle length, based on the length of three menstrual cycles, to estimate when youre most likely to be ovulating.

If you add the number of days in three cycles and divide the total number by three, it gives you your average cycle length.

    Example

Sarah tracked her last three menstrual cycles by counting the time from the first day of one period, to the day before the next period.

Cycle 1 was 28 days Cycle 2 was 32 days Cycle 3 was 27 days

    28 + 32 + 27 = 87

Your Ovulation Is Not A Clock

Any factors that influence the hormonal pulsing in your brain can influence your ovulation. Environmental and internal factors like stress, diet and exercise changes can lead your ovulation to happen slightly earlier, or later, or not at all. Your period may then come earlier or later as well, and be lighter or heavier.

What Days Of Your Cycle Do You Ovulate

As weve mentioned, ovulation occurs about halfway through the average human menstrual cycle. However, when most people ask this question, they are really asking either how they can get pregnant or avoid pregnancy. The six days prior to ovulation are the fertile window. The odds increase until they peak on the last three days, including ovulation day.

That means the most fertile days might be just a few days after the end of the menstrual period. After ovulation, the chances fall, with the chances of pregnancy during period bleeding being the lowest.

However, since not everyone always follows the average cycle, figuring out the fertile window can be tough. Someone might have a naturally short menstrual cycle or a naturally longer one. The best method of determining the fertile window is by looking for physical signs of ovulation.

What Happens During Ovulation

Right before ovulation, women experience a luteinizing hormone surge, which is linked to ovarian hormone production and egg maturation. Within 24 to 36 hours of an LH surge, a mature egg will be released for fertilization. An egg is available for fertilization for 12 to 24 hours after ovulation. It will disappear after 24 hours if it is not fertilized.

On the other hand, sperm can live in the body for 3 to 5 days, making the total fertile window for most women around 5 to 7 days. This means you can get pregnant from intercourse that occurred either just before or just after ovulation.

Changes In Body Temperature

DO YOU OVULATE BEFORE OR AFTER YOUR PERIOD

When youve just ovulated, your body temperature may increase very slightly, by about half a degree Celsius. If youre using temperature as a means of keeping track of when you are most fertile, you need to use a special thermometer to take your temperature every morning before you get out of bed. If you record the readings every day using a graph or a spreadsheet, its possible to learn your pattern over time. The time when you are most fertile is 2 to 3 days before the rise in temperature.

Positive Ovulation Test Result

An ovulation predictor kit works a lot like an at-home pregnancy test. You urinate on a stick or into a cup in which you place the stick or test strip. Two lines will appear. When the test line is darker than the control line, the test is considered positive, indicating that you are likely about to ovulate. This is the time to have sex to get pregnant.

Ovulation tests are a popular way to detect ovulation, but they have their pros and cons.

  • They’re less work than charting your basal body temperature.
  • Digital ovulation monitors can be relatively easy to use.
  • Simpler tests can be difficult to interpret as it’s not always easy to determine when the test line is darker than the control.
  • They can get expensive, especially if your periods are irregular or youre trying to conceive for a long time.
  • They’re not a guaranteed signyou ovulated. You can get a positive result and not ovulate.
  • Women with polycystic ovarian syndrome may get multiple positive results, even if they arent ovulating, making the kits useless.

Symptom #: Changes In Cervical Mucus

Just before ovulation, youll have more cervical mucus, and it will be thin and slippery . After ovulation, it becomes thicker and less noticeable. If you want to get pregnant, the days mucus is thin and slippery are your best bet. The challenge: Not everyone has a lot of cervical mucus, Kudesia says, so this method is less likely to be useful if youre in that group.

When Does Ovulation Happen

Learn When Do You Ovulate After Period | When is My Ovulation Day?

For the majority of women, ovulation happens once every month, approximately mid-way through their cycle, around 14 days since their last period .

But in reality, ovulation can happen almost any time from day 11 to day 21. This is because the average length of your cycle might be anywhere between 21 and 35 days.

Lets not forget that your body isnt always predictable either. Sometimes you ovulate on a different day just because thats your bodys natural rhythm that particular month, or youre under stress or undergoing an emotional upheaval, travelling, or even changing your lifestyle habits.

Because of this natural variation, it becomes much harder to identify exactly which day will be the magic number for you.

How Many Days After Period Is Safe

There is no absolutely “safe” time of the month when a woman can have sex without contraception and not risk becoming pregnant. However, there are times in the menstrual cycle when women may be most fertile and are most likely to conceive. The fertile days may last for up to 3-5 days after the end of your period.

How To Accurately Calculate When You Ovulate

Whilst this might sound rather confusing, it really doesnt need to be. Because there are several easy methods you can use to accurately predict and monitor how long after your period you ovulate.

Step #1: Track Your Periods

Firstly, keep track of your periods for at least six months. You dont need any kind of fancy equipment to do this, just your favorite calendar and a pen, or even an online calendar. You can also download an app to help but I usually find that simple is best.

On the first day of your period, make a note in your diary. Period Day 1 is what works for me. Then count 22 days forward and make a rough note of this too so you can best keep track of the length of your cycle. Then when you start to menstruate, you can pinpoint the exact length of your cycle.

Then simply repeat the process. After several cycles, you should start seeing a pattern that is unique to you.

Step #2: Calculate Your Possible Ovulation Days

Once you have worked out your typical cycle length, you can turn your attention to your ovulation dates.

If youre usually quite regular, you can get a rough idea by taking the length of your usual cycle, subtracting 16 days and then adding four. If your cycle lasts 27 days, so you would do the following:

27-16=11 then11+4= 15.

Then you can conclude that you are most likely to ovulate on day 15 of your cycle .

Obviously this method isnt fool-proof, so do be careful.

Ovulation Immediately After Menstruation

In women with a short menstrual cycle of 23 days or less, ovulation occurs almost immediately after the end of menstrual bleeding. The mid-cycle rule does not work here.

It turns out as follows, if the cycle, for example, is 23 days, and the length of the second phase is 15 days, then the day of follicle rupture is 23-15 = 8 DC. Ovulation occurs on the eighth day of the cycle almost immediately after menstruation.

Advice: If you are planning a pregnancy, the first sexual intercourse should be on the 6th DC, and the next on the 8th, then on the 9th. It means that you will have the highest chances of finding active sperm exactly at the time of release of the egg.

It is logical that if your cycle is about 30-32 days, then the onset of ovulation before the 14th DC is completely excluded, since there simply is no second phase more than 16 days

Understanding Your Menstrual Cycle

How Ovulation works

Your menstrual cycle begins on the first day of your period and continues up to the first day of your next period.

You’re most fertile at the time of ovulation , which usually occurs 12 to 14 days before your next period starts. This is the time of the month when you’re most likely to get pregnant.

It’s unlikely that you’ll get pregnant just after your period, although it can happen. It’s important to remember that sperm can sometimes survive in the body for up to 7 days after you have sex.

This means it may be possible to get pregnant soon after your period finishes if you ovulate early, especially if you have a naturally short menstrual cycle.

You should always use contraception when you have sex if you don’t want to become pregnant.

What Causes Ovulation To Occur

The menstrual cycle commences the 1st day your period starts. During this time, hormones secreted by the pituitary gland stimulates ovarian follicle to increase in size.

As these follicles grows, they begin to secrete female hormone estrogen, which helps to

  • Thicken the endometrium previously washed out as period
  • Stimulate the pituitary gland to trigger LH surge

LH surge occurs 36 hours before ovarian egg is released during ovulation. If you are able to discover LH surge you can easily predict your ovulation date before next period.

Ovulating kits and fertility monitors can help women who find it too difficult to know when ovulation occurs.

How Do I Calculate My Fertile Window

In a regular cycle, a woman’s fertile window is the day of ovulation and the five days before it. For an average 28-31 day cycle, the fertile window would be somewhere between days 14 and 17. Many doctors recommend having sex a few days before ovulation because sperm can live up to five days in a woman’s reproductive tract and will already be present in the woman’s body and be ready to meet the egg when it eventually releases.

How To Track Your Cycle

Working out your fertility window can be helped by tracking your menstrual cycle. You can simply mark your periods on a calendar or try some of the many apps available online .

The average menstrual cycle is 28-35 days. Ovulation usually occurs 14 days prior to your period starting. We recommend you track two to three cycles and work out the average length of your cycle. From this you can work out the average time you are likely to ovulate.

  • If your cycle is 28 days, ovulation should occur on day 14. Therefore aim to have regular intercourse from 10 days after your period has started.
  • If your period is 35 days, then ovulation should occur at 21 days and intercourse should be from 17 days after your period started.

Cramping That Occurs In The Middle Of Your Cycle

Tracking Ovulation To Find Your Fertile Window

There are many methods of tracking and predicting ovulation so you can try to figure out when you are most fertile. An ovulation day calculator may provide an estimate, but isn’t always the most accurate of methods, especially if you have irregular periods.

Some ways to try to pinpoint your ovulation period at home include over-the-counter ovulation predictor kits, body basal temperature charting, and checking for fertile cervical mucus.

Ovulation predictor kits increase your chance of getting pregnant by 40%, according to a review of research. Each kit comes with five or so test strips or sticks, and manufacturers typically recommend you test your urine for several days leading up to your suspected ovulation day. This makes this method can potentially costly, especially if you have somewhat irregular periods and you have to test for many days on end.

Among no-cost home ovulation-tracking methods, checking the texture of your cervical mucus may work best. According to research, people who had sex when they had slippery, egg-white-like cervical mucus were two to three times more likely to conceive than those who had scant or absent mucus secretions .

When Are You Ovulating The Most

Not to be pedantic, but actually, ovulation is when an egg is released and usually only occurs once per cycle. When most people talk about ovulating, they mean the changes that occur in a womans body to increase the chances of an egg being fertilized and safely implanted in the uterus.

Ovulation usually occurs about halfway through a menstrual cycle. The most fertile time of the cycle are the six days ending in the day of ovulation. That means that the best time to get pregnant may just be a few days after your period bleeding ends. If youre trying to avoid pregnancy, you might want to abstain for those days.
