Though people stop getting their period during pregnancy, its possible that they may still experience some bleeding. This bleeding does not necessarily indicate an underlying issue, but its important to understand the cause of it and whether its time to see a health care provider.

Bleeding tends to occur more often during the first trimester of pregnancy than the second or third. Estimates suggest that about 25 to 30 percent of pregnant people experience spotting at some point during their first trimester. There are a number of reasons for this bleeding.

Implantation bleeding: This refers to the light spotting that occurs about 10 to 14 days after conception, around the time when your period is due. Many people havent yet taken a pregnancy test at this point, so its easy to mistake the spotting for a period. This bleeding is lighter than a normal period, however, and only lasts for a couple of days. It occurs due to the implantation of the fertilized egg into the uterine lining.

Cervical changes: Spotting can occur shortly after you get pregnant due to cervical changes, and particularly after having sexual intercourse. As long as no infection is present, theres no need to be concerned about this.

Other causes: Heavier bleeding that more closely resembles a period during the first trimester of pregnancy can indicate something more serious, including:

  • Back pain
  • Uncontrollable vomiting and nausea

Right After Your Period Ends

Many women look forward to having contraception-free sex right after their period ends. Its true that its unlikely youll get pregnant a day or two after menstruation stops, but given the lifespan of sperm and the challenges around predicting ovulation exactly its not at all impossible.

This is especially true if you ovulate earlier than you usually do, or if you have a naturally short menstrual cycle of around 21 days.

So When Is Pregnancy Most Likely

The only time you can get pregnant is during your fertile window.

An egg only lives for about 24 hours after being released from your ovary, and sperm can only live for up to five days inside the body.

That means you can only get pregnant if you have sex:

  • in the four to five days leading up to ovulation
  • on the day of ovulation
  • on the day after ovulation

If youre looking to conceive, the best time to have sex is right before ovulation. This will give sperm time to reach the fallopian tube and meet the egg there.

After that, if no sperm has fertilized the egg, it will dissolve. You wont be able to get pregnant until your cycle restarts.

What If You Have A 28

The average menstrual cycle is 28 days, with the first day of menstruation as cycle day 1.

Most periods last two to seven days. Pregnancy is uncommon during this time, because your peak fertility window is still about a week or so away.

Around days 6 to 14 of your cycle, your body will start releasing follicle-stimulating hormone .

This helps develop an egg inside your ovary. Your body will also begin rebuilding the endometrial lining in your uterus.

Pregnancy is slightly more likely during this time. Sperm can live up to five days inside the body, so it could still be present when the egg matures.

Once the egg is mature, your body will release lutenizing hormone , triggering the eggs release from your ovary .

Ovulation usually occurs around cycle day 14. Pregnancy is likely on ovulation day.

That said, ovulation doesnt always happen like clockwork. It can occur anywhere from four days before to four days after the midpoint of your menstrual cycle.

The bottom Line

If you ovulate later in your cycle or start your period sooner than usual, you could become pregnant if you have sex in the days leading up to your period.

Lots of people dont have 28-day cycles. Some have cycles as short as 21 days and others as long as 35 days.

In fact, in one study , only about 30 percent of participants had their fertile window fall within days 10 to 17 of their cycle. Only 10 percent had ovulation fall exactly 14 days before their next period.

Added 16 Jun 2013:

Haven’t had sex since 5/10/2013 but it is now 06/16/2013 no period yet. Oh there is also no signs of early pregnancy. What seems to be the problem

It is possible that you are pregnant. Please, go to your nearest pharmacy and get an early pregnancy test. You can rely on the outcome of the test as they are pretty accurate.Best wishes to you.

Wait a tic, if you’ve not had sex since your last period it’s doubtful that you are pregnant, unless I’m reading your question incorrectly?

I haven’t had sex since my last period but zi’m still delayed

Anything is possible when it comes to being pregnant, but it’s highly doubtful that you are pregnant since you’ve not had sex since your last period.BUT you really need to buy a pregnancy test to allay your fears of being pregnant!Lara

Yes that got me too at first. You don’t bleed when you’re pregnant, at least not in a normal pregnancy. You’re probably just a little late if you haven’t had sex since your last period.

So it is possible that I am just delayed because I haven’t had intercourse after my last period

Yes it looked like a normal period. It wasn’t spotting also because it was heavy.

The most effective strategy for avoiding pregnancy is to refrain from sex. Sexually active people who do not wish to become pregnant should use contraceptives such as condoms or birth control.

Using two methods can offer additional protection, for example, when a person uses both hormonal birth control and condoms.

Several fertility monitoring techniques make it easier for a person to pinpoint their fertile window and avoid sex or use contraceptives during this time.

These methods are more effective if a person has regular periods. Some fertility monitoring strategies include:

  • Charting basal body temperature: A persons morning body temperature usually rises shortly after ovulation.
  • Using ovulation predictors: These tests typically give a positive result a day or two before ovulation, but it is possible to get a positive without ovulation.
  • Looking for fertile cervical fluid:Thick cervical fluid with a texture similar to raw egg whites indicates ovulation is approaching.
  • Checking cervical position and texture: Some females find that the position and texture of their cervix changes throughout their cycle.

How Does Ovulation Influence When You Can Get Pregnant

A woman’s menstrual cycle starts on the first day of her period and is measured up to the first day of the next period. A woman’s monthly cycle is normally 28 to 32 days, although some may have shorter or longer ones.

Ovulation usually occurs between 12 to 16 days from the next period, although many women may ovulate anytime between the 11th to the 21st day after the first day of their last menstrual period . This is when the woman is known to be fertile, because if sexual intercourse occurs during this phase, the chance of become pregnant is great. Women must remember though, that ovulation may occur at various days during each cycle, meaning that it may occur on different days each month. Your periods come about 2 weeks after you have ovulated.

To become pregnant, fertilization must occur – this is when your partner’s sperm unites with your egg somewhere in the fallopian tubes. Since an egg remains viable only 12 to 24 hours after being released from the ovary, the timing of sexual intercourse is important, and this should occur within this time. On the other hand, sperm survives up to 7 days within your body, and as long as you ovulate during the time that the sperm is viable, you can still get pregnant. This means that you have a “fertile window” of 6 days where you can ovulate anytime and your egg can meet the surviving sperm.

How Does Conception Occur

Conception occurs when a sperm from a man meets the egg from the woman. Once the womans ovary releases an egg, the egg usually lives only for 12-24 hours. The male sperm can live for an average of 3 days and sometimes up to 6 days.

The typical female menstrual cycle is 28-30 days. Some may have a shorter cycle, around 20 days, or a longer cycle, around 35 days. The first day of the menstrual cycle is when she starts her period. The periods usually last 3 to 7 days in most women. Ovulation occurs between the 12th and 15th day of the menstrual cycle, most commonly on the 14th day. During ovulation, usually, only a single egg is released from the ovary and sometimes more, which increases the chances of twins, triplets, and more. If fertilization does not occur, the uterine lining sheds and presents with bleeding, marking the onset of the periods.

Can You Get Pregnant A Couple Of Days After Your Period Has Finished

Yes, you can get pregnant in the couple of days after your period has finished – but, again, it is one of the less likely times in your cycle.

After your period starts, your cycle is moving closer to ovulation, and to your fertile phase, which is roughly days 11 to 21 in a 28-day cycle.

The closer you have sex to your fertile phase, the more likely you are to get pregnant.

Sperm can live up to five days in your body, so if you have a short cycle and early ovulation your chances of getting pregnant in the days just after your period are much higher.

When To See Your Health Care Provider

Because it isnt possible to get your period while pregnant, its important to be mindful of any bleeding you do experience during this time. While light bleeding or spotting during the first trimester is usually normal, bleeding that is accompanied by other symptoms may indicate something more serious, and its important to see a health care provider immediately. These symptoms include:

  • Cramping and pain
  • Passing clots or heavy bleeding
  • Severe pain in your pelvis and stomach

Its important to visit your health care provider if your bleeding is bright red in color and is heavy enough to soak through a pad. Pelvic pain and vaginal bleeding in the early stages of pregnancy may indicate an ectopic pregnancy. If you suspect this, see your health care provider as soon as possible.

Theres a lot of discussion surrounding pregnancy and periods, and we want to clear things up. Can you have a period and be pregnant? No. Since your period stops after your body starts producing hCG also known as the pregnancy hormone it isnt possible to experience a true period during pregnancy.

During the early stages of pregnancy, however, some people experience spotting or light bleeding and its usually normal. This bleeding is called implantation bleeding, and it happens when the fertilized egg implants in the uterine lining.
