Period Sex May Help Relieve Menstrual Cramps

If you have cramps, sex may not be the first thing on your mind, but it could actually help you feel better. Cramps happen when prostaglandins trigger uterine contractions to shed the lining that builds up throughout your menstrual cycle.

But heres the good news: orgasms could help reduce the pain associated with menstrual cramps. Orgasms cause a contraction in the same group of uterine muscles that squeeze and cramp during your period, with a subsequent release that can relieve muscle tension.

Plus, orgasms release endorphins and oxytocin, feel-good chemicals that support your mood and well-being. They also support a healthy stress response, make us feel more connected to our partners, and reduce pain.

Can I Get Pregnant Just After My Period Has Finished

Yes, although it’s not very likely. If you have sex without using contraception, you can conceive at any time during your menstrual cycle, even during or just after your period.

You can also get pregnant if you have never had a period before, during your first period, or after the first time you have sex.

There’s no “safe” time of the month when you can have sex without contraception and not risk becoming pregnant.

But there are times in your menstrual cycle when you’re at your most fertile, and this is when you’re most likely to conceive.

Offer To Use Birth Control To Skip Your Period

If your partner simply won’t get involved with sex while you are menstruating, or if you yourself are too uncomfortable with it, there is always the option of birth control that allows a person to skip their periods.

Dweck notes that for many people, “menstruation is a sign of health, fertility, and femininity.” It is nothing to be ashamed of, and should only be skipped if that is your physical preference.

Can You Get Pregnant On Your Period

One of the common misconceptions is that you cannot get pregnant while menstruating. This isnottrue, so remember to use birth control no matter when you have sex. The chances of a woman becoming pregnant are lower during menstruation and higher during ovulation.

However, bleeding can occur during ovulation, too. This can make it look like a woman is on her period when shes at her most fertile. Whether or not you are trying to conceive, please speak with a gynecologist about birth control and your cycle. Additionally, you can download a period tracker app if you want to track your menstrual cycle more closely.

Stds Are Still A Possibility

Chances of pregnancy with protected intercourse before period

Rumor has it that STD transmission could increase during menstruation, potentially because your cervix is slightly open at this time to let blood out. Dr. Streicher explains that, in theory, since STDs like gonorrhea and chlamydia are ascending infections, anything that helps them travel up into the uterus could increase the possibility of transmissionagain, in theory. There isnt enough research out there to back this idea up yet.

No matter what, its crucial to remember that just because there isnt necessarily an increased risk doesnt mean that theres no risk. Stick to your typical STD prevention regimen during period sexmeaning you should use a condom if you or your partner havent been tested.

You can totally have sex while youre on your period. Orgasms can even relieve your menstrual cramps. However, having sex on your period wont protect you from pregnancy or STDs. Using a birth control method will help prevent pregnancy. And using a condom every time you have sex is a great way to prevent pregnancy and STDs.

Suggest Shower Sex Or Placing Towels On The Bed

If you aren’t ready to try a menstrual disc but you or your partner are concerned about the mess, there are still solutions that allow you to have sex while one or both of you are on your period: you can have sex in the shower, which will allow both parties to wash off any blood easily.

You can lay a dark towel down on the bed underneath you both. Towels should be enough to collect any blood present, and can then be put in the wash. There is also the option to have sex on a waterproof bedsheet.

You Might Like It A Lot

Arousal is different for every woman, and some may be too distracted by their period and its annoyances to actually get in the mood for sex. But for others, menstruation could actually be a turn-on of sorts. Thats because your estrogen and testosterone are low on day 1, but they start to rise by day 3. Some women report they feel more aroused and more sensitive around this time, says Ford says.

Plus, your flow can serve as extra lubrication during sex, which can also increase pleasure. If you typically use a store-bought lubricant to help with dryness during sex, this may be your week to go natural. And some research suggests that orgasms can even relieve menstrual cramping and PMS.

And Yes You Can Still Get Pregnant

Can I get pregnant 2 days before my period? – Dr. Shirin Venkatramani

One of the old-timey myths about period sex is that you cant get pregnant, but thats totally false. I tell people that while the chance of conceiving on days 1 to 7 of the cycle is low, its not zero, van Dis says. If youre not ready to become a parent, its best to use at least one reliable form of birth control at all times.

Van Dis suggests shower sex or a product like a menstrual disc, which can be used for mess-free period sex.

Other fun options for period hanky-panky:

  • Avoid your heaviest days if youd rather keep it cleaner.
  • Do it in the bathtub.
  • Do it in a super-secluded outdoor space.
  • Throw a towel down on the bed.
  • Potentially avoid positions like the cowgirl, because gravity.
  • Do it any way you like and take a shower after no biggie.

Oral sex can be safe to do on your period, too. But to keep things safer and a little cleaner, feel free to use a dental dam, which is a barrier method for preventing STI transmission.

What Are The Chances A Woman Can Get Pregnant On Her Period

A womans likelihood of getting pregnant can rise and fall throughout her ovulation cycle. While the average females monthly cycle may be 29 days, others may have a cycle that varies from 20 to 40 days, or longer.

The likelihood that a woman will get pregnant one to two days after she starts bleeding is nearly zero. But the likelihood starts to increase again with each successive day, even though shes still bleeding.

At roughly day 13 after starting her period, her chance of pregnancy is an estimated 9 percent.

While these numbers may be low, it doesnt mean a woman can ever be 100 percent assured that she wont get pregnant on her period.

Can You Get Pregnant If You Have Sex On Your Period

The short answer is: yes.

You can get pregnant if you have sex on your period. Your fertile windowâthe time in your cycle when you are most likely to become pregnantâdepends on various environmental and physiological factors. Conception can occur if you have unprotected sex during your period.

But, research has found the probability of being in your fertile window on the first couple of days of your period is close to zero, and may rise to about 2% on day four .

People with predictable, typical-length menstrual cycles are less likely to be in their fertile window during or right after their period, while people with short or unpredictable cycles are more likely to be in their fertile window during menstruation . The fertile window is the days in your cycle when pregnancy is most likely to occur. It includes the days leading up to, including, and immediately after ovulation . If you ovulate early in your cycle, which is more likely as you age, your fertile window can overlap with your period . If you have unprotected sex during your period when it overlaps with your potential ovulation days, then pregnancy can occur.

Some people experience bleeding outside of their period. Be aware of ovulation spottingâand other causes of spottingâso you donât mistake it for a period while having unprotected sex. If you donât want to become pregnant, use a condom or other form of birth control every time you have sex.

Its also worth remembering that even though you can safely have sex without using condoms when on the combined contraceptive pill, you will not be protected against STIs.

If you missed pills or didnt take it as instructed there is a chance you could still get pregnant, so you should avoid unprotected sex. Find out more about what to do if youre worried about having missed a pill.

Why Do Some People Think That Having Sex On Their Period Means They Cant Get Pregnant

Period Pregnancy?!

If someone has a perfectly regular, 28 day menstrual cycle where they ovulate every month on day 14 and their monthly bleed begins at day 23 and lasts for 5 days having penile/vaginal sex during day 23-28, when they are menstruating, has a very small chance of growing a human. However

  • MOST PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE PERFECTLY REGULAR 28 DAY CYCLES. Many people who menstruate have unpredictable periods, or at least slight variations each month, meaning it can be difficult to know when they ovulate. In fact, folks who use the rhythm method / Fertility Awareness where they track their cycles and only have penile/vaginal sex during days they believe are not a risk for pregnancy have a 25% chance of creating a human. Thats a 1 in 4 chance. There are much more reliable ways to avoid pregnancy.
  • Some people may experience spotting at the time of ovulation, which could be confused with a period. So if that person thinks that when they bleed is a safe time to not get pregnant but happens to be someone who spots during their ovulation that particular month , they have a very high chance of getting pregnant from penile/vaginal intercourse.

Can You Get Pregnant During Period Sex

Technically, yes, but it’s not very common. You’re still rolling the dice if you choose to have unprotected period sex. Unprotected sex increases the chances for both pregnancy and for contracting a sexually-transmitted infection . So if you are trying to avoid pregnancy, it’s important to use some sort of birth control during sex.

Here’s the lowdown: If you have regular periods and you’re absolutely sure what you’re experiencing is actually your period, “the chances of getting pregnant are basically nil,” Dr. Streicher said. Butand this is a big butif you’re having spotting or bleeding from some other cause, that won’t necessarily be the case. “Some may think they’re having a period because they’re bleeding and think it’s safe to have unprotected sex when it’s not,” Dr. Streicher said. “It can be breakthrough bleeding or bleeding during ovulationyou have to be aware of that.”

Also important: is the timing with which you have period sex. That means, if you have sex at the tail end of your period, your partner’s sperm may be active inside you for five days. So, you ovulate earlier in your cycle, there’s a teeny chance you could get pregnant, Dr. Minkin said. “It’s not super likely, but possible,” Dr. Minkin said.

Period Sex Could Shorten How Many Days You Bleed

Your period lasts as long as it takes to shed the uterine lining , but period sex could help decrease the length.

In the same way that orgasms could help cramps by stimulating uterine muscle contractions, climaxing could also speed up the shedding process. Theres no real scientific data on this benefit, but anecdotally people report this as a positive to period sex, so it may be worth trying and tracking whats true for you.

I Didn’t Have Sex For 4 Years Now My Period Is Super Heavy

What are the four hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle? Thanks ...

Vansoffthewall · Yesterday 22:05

As it says in the subject really. Can sex make your period heavy? I didn’t have sex for 4 years due to exH leaving me and me not wanting to bring back men when the DC might see them / find out. Went away for a weekend and pulled, had sex, this month AF came a couple days early and has been accompanied by the most agonising cramps and has lasted a week! For years and years it was 3 days heavy flow maximum, this time it has been 6. Is this a coincidence or is it A Thing? If I google I just get advice about bleeding immediately after sex which isn’t what I am trying to find out about. I just want to know if the two things are linked.

Frazzledmummy123 · Yesterday 22:29

I’d speak to your gp for peace of mind. I have no clue why this happened, however 2 thoughts I had are, because of the time that had passed since you last had sex, it could just be a hormonal reaction to it?TW Another thought I had . Could it possibly be a very early miscarriage? Many very early miscarriages are mistaken for a heavy, painful period. It is more likely the first, if any, of these, however speak to your gp.

Frazzledmummy123 · Today 11:00

Vansoffthewall · Today 00:56

Yes, an early miscarriage would be like a very heavy period, and can be very painful. I’ve had 2, and they were like how you describe. You could do a pregnancy test as there might still be enough hcg to show a faint positive. It might also just be hormonal, or just a random bad period though.
