The phenomenon is called post-pill amenorrhea, Dr. Weiss continues. The pill suppresses your bodys normal production of hormones that are involved in your menstrual cycle.
He says it can take several months for your body to return to its normal production, and therefore several months for your period to return.
But, in some cases, there is another reason for late or missed periods.
It can be something as simple as lifestyle factors like stress or exercise. Or it could be an underlying condition like hypothyroidism.

Youâll need to use a backup form of birth control for 2 days if youâre more than 3 hours late to take a pill or miss any number of pills.
If you should have taken your pill 3 or more hours ago, take it as soon as you remember.
If you forgot one dayâs pill, take it right away, then take todayâs pill on schedule if you havenât yet. Itâs OK if you take two pills in one day. Youâll take the rest of your pills as normal.
If you forgot two or more pills back to back, you need to take two pills on the day you remember. Then, youâll take two pills again the next day. After that, youâll take your pills as normal.

When Will Regular Periods Resume
The length of time it takes for periods to resume varies from person to person based on a number of factors. Stress, exercise, body weight, and overall health can all influence when periods will return and how regular they will be.
In the absence of another health condition, though, normal fertility – including regular ovulation and periods usually resumes within 3 months.
