How To Tell If Your Ovulating With Irregular Periods

Ive Been Using Contraception Will This Affect My Cycle

Track your Ovulation if you have irregular periods |Basal Body Temperature & More-Dr. Manjula Deepak

This depends on what type of contraception youve been using. If youve been taking the pill, your period may be irregular when you first come off it, so try to give yourself up to 3 months for your natural menstrual cycle to get back to its normal routine.

The first period after stopping the pill is known as a withdrawal bleed. The next one after this is your first natural period.

The contraceptive injection can also affect your cycle. Your periods may change and become irregular, heavier, shorter, lighter or stop altogether. This can carry on for some months after you stop the injections.

If you use the contraceptive implant your fertility will return to normal as soon as it is taken out.

Look For An Increase In Cervical Mucus

When youre nearing ovulation, your cervical discharge will prob look like clear, raw egg whites. You can usually even stretch it between your fingers.

Here are three ways to check your cervical discharge:

  • Before you pee, wipe the opening of your vagina with white toilet paper and observe the color and feel of the mucus.
  • Look at the color and texture of discharge in your underwear.
  • Put clean fingers into your vagina, and then check the color and texture by rubbing the mucus between your thumb and index finger.

Ovulation problems can be caused by other factors.

    • Being overweight or underweight can lead to hormone disorders that can cause a woman to not ovulate or ovulate irregularly.

    • Certain medication can affect the hormones in a woman’s body and disrupt her ovulation cycle.

    • Polycystic ovary syndrome is a hormonal disorder that causes enlarged ovaries with cysts that form on the edges of the ovaries. One of the symptoms of PCOS is irregular or no ovulation.

    • Thyroid disorders, such as an overactive thyroid or an underactive thyroid, can disturb ovulation because both conditions create problems with the levels of hormones in the body.

    • Premature ovarian failure is when a woman’s ovaries stop working before she turns 40, causing her to stop ovulating.

Some causes of irregular periods and abnormal ovulation may be solved by making lifestyle changes. Talk with your doctor, who can help determine the best plan for you.

Irregular Periods Can Be Caused By Non

Lynn points out that irregular menstrual cycles can also be caused by:

    • Perimenopause As you enter the transition to menopause, which can last as long as 10 years, your menstrual cycles will become erratic as part of the process. If you skip more than two periods, you are probably in late perimenopause. Its been estimated that 70 percent of women experience menstrual irregularities in the approach to menopause.
    • Stress and anxiety Chronic stress or even short-term anxiety about a specific problem can wreak havoc with your hormone balance, causing a missed period and irregular cycle.
    • Extreme exercise Exercising too much can throw off the timing of menstrual bleeding and sometimes stop it.
    • Eating disorders, extreme dieting, or weight loss Being underweight, whether from extreme exercise, dieting, an eating disorder, or illness, can have the same effect.
    • Age As mentioned, perimenopause and menopause have a major effect. But being young can create irregularities as well. Once menstruation begins in young women, it can take several years before it falls into a pattern, says Lynn.
    • Birth control And not just birth control pills IUDs, implants, and rings can also cause irregular bleeding.

Calculate Based On Your Menstrual Cycles

How to determine ovulation date, ALEBIAFRICANCUISINE.COM

If you have a regular cycle, ovulation is likely to occur 14 days before your next expected period.

Since you wont be able to pin down the exact day when you ovulate from this method, you need to add 5 days before and 4 days after this date to get a date range.

Generally speaking, from day 9 to day 18, youre fertile and likely to get pregnant.

How about if your cycles are irregular? This is how you can calculate your ovulation:

    • First day of ovulation = the shortest cycle length 18 days
    • Last day of ovulation = the longest cycle length 11 days

For example, if your shortest cycle lasts for 25 days and the longest lasts for 35 days. Your ovulation window could be from day 7 to day 24 .

As you can see, the date range can be pretty wide if your cycles are very irregular. This, therefore, is a less accurate method to calculate ovulation when compared to the other methods.

When Should I Take A Pregnancy Test With Irregular Periods

Irregular periods can make it hard to judge when to take a pregnancy test. According to the FDA, as many as 20 women in 100 will not detect a pregnancy on the first day of their missed period, partly due to irregular cycles.

One option is to test 36 days after the start of your last menstrual cycle or 28 days after having sex. By then, the level of the pregnancy hormone human chorionic gonadotropin should be high enough to detect a pregnancy.

If you dont want to wait that long, one OB/GYN suggests taking a pregnancy test 14 days after having sex. If its negative, repeat it in about a week.

    Fertility And Ovulation Monitor

Tracking ovulation with irregular periods can be difficult. But there are ways to help you understand your menstrual cycle and help you know when you are ovulating.

Fertility and ovulation monitors are excellent at helping you make sense of your unique cycle and pattern. They can help you detect hormonal and temperature changes which signal ovulation.

It is important to mention that not all fertility and ovulation monitors are created equal especially when it comes to women with PCOS. If you read the fine print on a lot of them they say that they will work for most women except women with PCOS.

However, there is one brand that is highly accurate for women with PCOS and that is OvuSense.

OvuSense is the most advanced home fertility monitor. It measures continuous Core Body Temperature using a specially designed vaginal sensor clinically proven in 2 trials and 6 clinical publications.

OvuSense is able to track your fluctuations in progesterone and can predict ovulation 24 hours in advance using the cycle data and can confirm the exact date of ovulation with 99% accuracy, and can discover your unique pattern each cycle. This is why this tracker is recommended for women with PCOS.

If your cycle is irregular, using OvuSense is probably one of the best ways to track ovulation with PCOS.

Changes In Your Basal Body Temperature

While you may not actually feel this symptom, it can still be a sign of ovulation. As mentioned above, your basal body temperature will rise during ovulation and stay elevated during that time. After tracking your basal body temperature for a few months, youll begin to more easily notice the patterns and identify notable changes.

Understanding when you ovulate is key to getting pregnant, but it can also give you clues about why youre suddenly experiencing certain symptoms. When you know the signs of ovulation, you can be better prepared, regardless of whether or not youre trying to conceive. The more in tune you are with your body, the better youll be able to predict when ovulation will occur.

    Irregular Periods And Ovulation

I am having irregular periods. How do I know when I am ovulating?

Its possible to ovulate without later bleeding like a period. This often occurs because of previous uterine scarring or certain hormonal medications.

Its also possible to have menstrual-like bleeding without ovulation. This generally happens when the uterine lining becomes so thick it becomes unstable and naturally sloughs off.

The uterine lining can become thick without ovulation if the hormone estrogen, which is produced prior to ovulation, continues to be secreted unopposed by the other female hormone, progesterone, which is produced after ovulation.

There are many possible causes for irregular menstruation, and many of the causes can affect ovulation or make getting pregnant more difficult. In some cases, the cause of irregular menstruation is unknown.

Some causes that may affect ovulation and your ability to carry a pregnancy include:

What Fertility Treatments Can Help When You Have Irregular Periods

If you talk to your doctor about medical assistance for getting pregnant with an irregular period, youll likely be prescribed medication to induce ovulation. One of the best and most effective ways to get pregnant with an irregular period or with a condition like PCOS is medication like Letrozole or Clomid, Dr. Conti says. These treatments make you reliably ovulate every single month as if you had a normal period.

While these medicines dont erase the underlying problem, they help your body ovulate each month that you take them. The goal is to increase the rate of pregnancy to what it would be if your cycles were regular. Sometimes thats all you need to help the sperm reach the egg and conceive. If not, treatments like in-vitro fertilization and IUI can help increase your chances of getting pregnant.Dr. Conti also recommends scheduling a preconception appointment before you actively begin trying to get pregnant so that you can prepare for what your fertility journey may entail. You can also ask any questions you may have about your cycle so that you know whether or not youll need to take some additional steps to conceive.
