Why Did I Get My Period Early On Birth Control

How Long Does It Last

Why you can skip your period while taking birth control

Breakthrough bleeding related to most types of hormonal birth control usually stops within 3 to 6 months of starting it.

Episodes of bleeding can last longer if youre taking a continuous birth control pill or if you often forget to take your pill.

With the implant, the bleeding pattern you experience in the first 3 months is often a sign of how itll be moving forward.

What Others Say: Experience And Advice

In my opinion, having an early period on the pill is normal and it occurs occasionally. The period occurs early sometimes for no actual reason and sometimes if you miss your pill or take it later than you have to. I think that when you are in the middle of using the pill, the body is adjusting to hormonal changes taking place. Sometimes, spotting, breakthrough bleeding or the skipping of a period can occur too, which isnt abnormal as well. Keep on taking the pills without changing the way you take them. I think it is best to take the pills in the pack without getting too concerned about what the body is doing. With the bleeding occurring early, it is normal that you wont bleed during the inactive week. I dont think you need to worry as it only means that the cycle is a little off thats all.

I have been taking the yaz birth control for over 5 months and I had a heavy period this morning. The blood that came out was of a brownish red color. However, the bleeding stopped afterwards. However, I wasnt supposed to have my period today even though I am sexually active.

Some Women Can Improve Breakthrough Bleeding On Their Own

Quitting smoking can help. So can taking birth control pills at the same time each day.

If youre getting continuous hormones with birth control pills or the ring, try scheduling a period every few months. This gives the uterus a chance to shed any built-up lining. It can help reduce irregular spotting and bleeding.

According to medical experts, having a period for a shorter amount of time than usual is normal if youve been on birth control pills for a few months. Between 10% and 20% of women experience light or no period after having the sixth pack of birth control pills. Women who have missed their period and are experiencing common pregnancy symptoms that include nausea and soreness of the breasts should get a pregnancy test immediately.

Using Birth Control Pills For Health Conditions

Taken correctly, birth control pills can be more than 90% effective in preventing pregnancy. The pills can also be used to treat some gynecological conditions. The usage can cause spotting or bleeding for different reasons.

Birth control pills may be prescribed for the following conditions:

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome is a hormonal disorder that affects the ovaries and is characterized by low progesterone levels. While birth control pills can help treat PCOS, the sudden spike in progesterone can cause spotting due to the shedding of the uterine lining. Irregular bleeding usually stops after a few menstrual cycles.
  • Endometriosis occurs when uterine tissues grow outside of the uterus. Birth control pills can relieve symptoms by keeping the body in a steady hormonal state. Even so, spotting affects up to 50% of women with endometriosis during the first three to nine months of starting oral contraceptives.
  • Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths that tend to occur during the childbearing years. Birth control pills do not make fibroids grow and can reduce the vaginal bleeding fibroids sometimes cause.

    • When changing the type of birth control pill or the dose of estrogen.
    • When a woman does not take her birth control pill correctly, missing doses or not taking them at the same time each day.
    • After using birth control for a long time, which can affect the lining of the uterus and cause bleeding.
    • During the first few days of using an intrauterine device , one either with or without the synthetic hormone progestin some women continue to experience spotting between periods with an IUD.
    • When using the Depo-Provera birth control injection.

Could An Irregular Cycle Be Part Of Puberty

If youre in puberty, you no longer have to ask yourself, why did my period come early?. This is a time full of change and uncertainties, and your reproductive system is just as affected as the rest of your body and mind. Changes in hormones are natural and marked by many things mood swings, increased sweating, and getting your period included.

However, simply getting your first period doesnt mean you should expect your hormones to balance out. In fact, it takes a few years for a consistent cycle to develop, so having a shorter cycle one month and a longer one the next month is to be expected.

Moreover, some studies claim that your period coming early or late for up to six years after it first started is completely normal.

While this is comforting news, it doesnt always bring peace of mind if you experience significant pain or feel like something is definitely wrong. A typical Gynecology service that most clinics provide includes talking to a doctor and having the outer genital parts examined.

Is Not Having Your Period During Placebo Week Normal For Women

    Light Bleeding After Plan B

The cause of menstruation is a sudden drop in female hormone levels. Estrogen and progesterone are produced artificially with the pill. As a result, having menstruation while on the pill is not a natural period.

The period of a woman is never necessary when using birth control. Whenever a woman is on the pill, the body reveals that a woman is not pregnant.

Using birth control to skip a period is safe when using pills that have an extended life span. These offer women four periods a year and skip placebo week by using the 21 or 28-day packs of pills.

Whenever a woman uses birth control, it is also common to bleed outside of the placebo week. In fact, 20% or 1 out of 5 women experience this when using the birth control pill. Any bleeding should no longer occur after three months of pill use. Women will want to contact a physician if bleeding does not stop after this amount of time.

What To Know About The Last Week Of Birth Control Pills

As a woman, it is important to know about the effects of birth control pills during the last week of use. The best way to learn more about how birth control pills affect you during the pills last week is to consult with an Alpharetta gynecologist.

When taking birth control pills, one of the things that women will want to find out is why they dont have their period during the placebo week.

One of the reasons women dont get their period while on the pill is the synthetic hormones present in the pill. These synthetic hormones make the uterus lining thinner, and as a result, ovulation and fertilization stop. When this occurs, the uterus lining begins to shed while a woman is menstruating.

Birth control is potent, and as a result, it can make the uterus thinner to the point where nothing is left to be thinned out. This is why many women cannot have their period whenever they are using birth control.

Using Birth Control To Treat Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding

Abnormal vaginal bleeding may be caused by more serious factors, such as polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, pelvic organ infections or certain cancers. Birth control pills, patches, implants, injections or rings that contain a combination of the hormones estrogen and a synthetic form of progesterone may be used to treat the abnormal vaginal bleeding caused by these conditions. These low doses of hormones regulate the menstrual cycle, reducing or eliminating the abnormal bleeding.

Talk to your healthcare provider if you experience spotting during the first few months of taking a new type of birth control pill.

Also, speak up if you experience bleeding that is heavy or persistent or spotting that worsens several months after starting the pills.

The dosage could be too high, and a simple adjustment could fix the problem. Or there may be a co-occurring condition causing the abnormal bleeding.

There could be another explanation, too: pregnancy. If youve missed a pill or taken one later than usual, theres a risk you are pregnant. The blood could be a sign of implantation.

A thorough evaluation by a healthcare provider should reveal the cause of the bleeding.
