Women Not Taking The Combined Oral Contraceptive Pill
If you are not taking the COC pill then a hormone tablet called norethisterone can be prescribed. The dose is one tablet three times a day. You start three days before a period is due. It can be continued until you want to have a period. Your period will then normally begin 2-3 days after stopping it. It can be taken for up to 3-4 weeks if necessary. This is only for use on an occasional basis for special events, rather than something to be taken regularly.
Norethisterone is normally safe to take. However, if you have an increased risk of having a deep vein thrombosis this method may not be suitable for you. Your doctor will be able to discuss this with you. Some women have side-effects such as bloating, stomach upset, breast discomfort and reduced sex drive .
A different hormone medicine called medroxyprogesterone may be advised instead of norethisterone because of it has a lower risk of causing a DVT.
The Risk Of Venous Thromboembolism And Period Delay Tablets
It is well documented that hormonal medicines containing estrogens are associated with increased risk of VTE, but that increased risk is less than the risk during pregnancy but higher than not using estrogens. Therefore it is vitally important that anyone who uses estrogens or hormonal contraception beware of this very serious risk. A VTE is a blood clot that usually starts in veins in the extremities of the body, for example, the lower leg. Typical symptoms will include swelling of the area, redness and discomfort. The blood clot represents a risk because it can travel very quickly to the heart or lungs which can ultimately and very quickly prove fatal. Whilst the absolute risk is very low for an event like this it is very important that the user is aware of the possibility of a VTE.
