According to clinical guidelines, the average woman is potentially fertile between days 10 and 17 of her menstrual cycle
This assumes that ovulation occurs exactly 14 days before the onset of the next menses, and that the fertile window extends before and after ovulation however, these assumptions are based on outdated information
When To See A Doctor
If you have fertility concerns, its generally advisable to see a medical professional after trying for a year to get pregnant with either timed intercourse or timed insemination, if the individual is using donor sperm, says Dr. Acharya. For individuals 35 and older, Dr. Acharya recommends seeking care within six months rather than a year due to their advanced reproductive age.
In some instances, however, it may make sense to see a doctor sooner. If someone is concerned, then it makes sense to reach out immediately, like if their cycles are irregular, she adds.
There are a number of approaches a doctor, usually an obstetrician-gynecologist or fertility specialist, may take to help those experiencing issues with ovulation. This could include lifestyle interventions, such as dietary changes, advising weight loss or determining whether the individual is taking any over-the-counter supplements that could be affecting ovulation. In other cases, individuals may need medication to induce ovulation and to prompt the body to release the egg.

Calculate When Ovulation Starts
If you have a 30-day cycle, then ovulation will occur approximately on day 16 of your cycle. Ovulation occurs 10-14 days before your next period, so you will get an approximate ovulation date by subtracting 14 from the number of days in your cycle . This means that ovulation will occur 16 days after your period starts. If you have your period on January 1, ovulation will take place on January 17.
Use the chart below to determine when youre most likely to ovulate based on the length of your menstrual cycle. Find the length of your cycle in the left-hand column to see how many days after the beginning of your period you will ovulate and when youre at your most fertile.

What To Expect At Your Appointment
During your first visit with a fertility specialist, your doctor will ask a lot of questions about your history, to try to understand factors that may be making it harder to become pregnant. They may order some blood tests to try to understand any irregularities that might be keeping you from getting pregnant, and to make sure you are in the best possible health to become pregnant. Theyll also order a on your partner though this wont be performed on the day of your initial appointment. Depending on your medical history, you might also plan an ultrasound and additional imaging to further explore. If you arent ovulating, your doctor may prescribe medications, including ones that can help induce ovulation. The best choice is very personal and your doctor will help you understand all of your options.
Wherever you are on your fertility journey, remember that approximately 85% of healthy women will get pregnant within a year of trying. For those who struggle to conceive, you can increase your chances by mixing love with science and seeing a doctor who specializes in fertility.

Tracking Ovulation At Home
While the most accurate way to confirm ovulation is with an ultrasound or hormonal blood tests ordered by your doctor, you have options when it comes to tracking ovulation at home.
- Ovulation predictor kits . These are generally available OTC at your corner drugstore. They detect the presence of LH in your urine, which usually means you will ovulate soon.
- Fertility monitors. These are also available OTC. They track two hormones estrogen and LH to help identify your fertile window. Fertility monitors can be pricier than options that track LH only. Some monitors claim to detect 4 or more fertile days each month with 99 percent accuracy .
Always follow the manufacturers instructions to ensure youre making the best use of at-home trackers. Talk with a doctor or pharmacist to determine which of these tools is right for you.

Buy An Ovulation Predictor Kit
Don’t want to mess around with mucus? You don’t have to. Many women use ovulation predictor kits, which identify the date of ovulation 12 to 24 hours in advance by looking at levels of luteinizing hormone, or LH, the last of the hormones to hit its peak before ovulation.
All you have to do is pee on a stick and wait for the indicator to tell you whether you’re about to ovulate. These kits are more accurate than the use of apps which predict when you should be ovulating, but not necessarily when you are ovulating.
A less precise and rarely used approach is a saliva test, which measures estrogen levels in your saliva as ovulation nears. When you’re ovulating, a look at your saliva under the test’s eyepiece will reveal a microscopic pattern that resembles the leaves of a fern plant or frost on a window pane. Not all women get a good “fern,” but this test, which is reusable, can be cheaper than the kits.
There are also devices that detect the numerous salts in a woman’s sweat, which change during different times of the month. Called the chloride ion surge, this shift happens even before the estrogen and the LH surge, so these tests give a woman a four-day warning of when she may be ovulating, versus the 12-to-24-hour notice that standard ovulation predictors provide.
The saliva and chloride ion surge tests have not been well studied and tend to be used much less frequently.
Can You Ovulate More Than Once In A Given Cycle
Maybe, but its not clear whether this would have any additional effect on fertility. One study from 2003 suggested that some people have the potential to ovulate two or three times in a given menstrual cycle. But other researchers disagreed with the conclusions, emphasizing that only one fertile ovulation happens per cycle.
Its possible to release multiple eggs during one ovulation. Releasing multiple eggs can happen spontaneously, or as part of treatments for infertility. If more than one egg is fertilized, this situation may result in fraternal multiples, like twins. Approximately 2 out of every 3 sets of twins are fraternal twins.

Tracking Basal Body Temperature
People can work out roughly when they are going to ovulate each month by tracking their daily basal body temperature. For most people, the temperature reading will be 12 days before their period starts.
To use this method, a person needs to measure and record their temperature each day using a basal body thermometer. It is best to take the reading at the same time every morning, ideally before getting out of bed in the morning.
Rectal thermometers are usually more reliable than oral thermometers. Because the change in temperature is typically very small, it is important to use a thermometer with an accurate and easy to read scale.
Basal body thermometers are available in pharmacies, and a person can also purchase them online.
There are also many smartphone apps that allow people to easily record their basal body temperature and track their fertility cycles. Some thermometers even come with their own apps.
Tracking basal body temperature over multiple cycles can help a person predict when ovulation is likely to occur.
Reasons For Delayed Ovulation
There are a number of reasons why ovulation may be delayed.
Some people simply have a longer first half of their cycle. For some women thats pretty consistenttheyll have a delayed ovulation every month, says Dr. Acharya. For those women, theyre probably ovulating just further into the cycle than a woman with a 28-day cycle.
Its also possible to have a cycle where you dont ovulate. This is simply due to variation in the natural cycle, explains Dr. Acharya.
However, in some cases, delayed ovulation could occur alongside an underlying issue, such as polycystic ovary syndrome. Taking a hormonal medication, such as Plan B, may also cause delayed ovulation, as could extreme stress beyond the typical day-to-day stressors. Malnutrition can also cause delayed ovulation.

How To Know When Ovulation Occurs For Cycles Longer Or Shorter Than 28 Days
Because the length of the luteal phase is relatively rigid, its easy to determine when you ovulated once your period starts: about 14 days ago. Its not as easy to determine when you will ovulate. But a few tools can help you estimate:
Tracking your cycle
Tracking can help you identify patterns in your cycle and estimate a cycle length thats typical for you. You can roughly calculate your ovulation day by subtracting 14 days from your average cycle length.
Say your average cycle is 32 days . A 14-day luteal phase would put your ovulation day around Day 18 of your cycle.
Say your average cycle is 22 days. A 14-day luteal phase would put your ovulation day around Day 8 of your cycle.
Keep in mind its normal for your cycle length to fluctuate from month to month, so this method is just an estimate.
Also keep in mind this method assumes your luteal phase is 14 days long. While 14 days is typical for most, the luteal phase can vary between 10 and 16 days. If youre on either end of that range, its more accurate to determine your average ovulation day using an ovulation test strip, or by taking your temperature.
Ovulation test strips
Ovulation test strips are over-the-counter sticks you pee on, and they reveal when youll ovulate. Its recommended you start using ovulation test strips no later than Day 8 of your cycle, then continue to test every day until you see a positive test. A positive test usually means youll ovulate within the next 24 to 36 hours.

From The Menstrual Period To Ovulation
When your menstrual cycle begins, your estrogen levels are low. Your hypothalamus sends out a message to your pituitary gland which then sends out the follicle stimulating hormone . This FSH triggers a few of your follicles to develop into mature eggs. One of these will develop into the dominant follicle, which will release a mature egg and the others will disintegrate.
As the follicles mature they send out another hormone, estrogen. The high levels of estrogen will tell the hypothalamus and pituitary gland that there is a mature egg. A luteinizing hormone is then released, referred to as your LH surge. The LH surge causes the egg to burst through the ovary wall within 24-36 hours and begin its journey down the fallopian tube for fertilization.Ovulation Predictor Kits work by detecting this LH surge. The follicle from which the egg was released is called the corpus luteum, and it will release progesterone that helps thicken and prepare the uterine lining for implantation. The corpus luteum will produce progesterone for about 12-16 days
If an egg is fertilized, thecorpus luteum will continue to produce progesterone for a developing pregnancy until the placenta takes over. You can begin looking for pregnancy symptoms as early as a week after fertilization. You can also begin testing for pregnancy as early as 7-10 days past your ovulation date with an Early Detection Pregnancy Test.

Changes In Body Temperature
When youve just ovulated, your body temperature may increase very slightly, by about half a degree Celsius. If youre using temperature as a means of keeping track of when you are most fertile, you need to use a special thermometer to take your temperature every morning before you get out of bed. If you record the readings every day using a graph or a spreadsheet, its possible to learn your pattern over time. The time when you are most fertile is 2 to 3 days before the rise in temperature.
When Do Most Girls Get Their Period
Most girls get their first period when theyre around 12. But getting it any time between age 10 and 15 is OK. Every girls body has its own schedule.
There isnt one right age for a girl to get her period. But there are some clues that it will start soon:
- Most of the time, a girl gets her period about 2 years after her breasts start to develop.
- Another sign is vaginal discharge fluid that a girl might see or feel on her underwear. This discharge usually begins about 6 months to a year before a girl gets her first period.

How Long After Period Do You Ovulate
Now we know what period cycle means, how to predict next period and how to know next ovulation date.
Next, how to calculate how many days after period do you ovulate.
Period length can vary from woman to woman. Most women have period for about 5 days. It possible your period is shorter or longer. However, normal length for period is two to seven days.
Preparing For The Next Period
As the empty follicle shrinks, if the egg is not fertilized, levels of estrogen and progesterone decrease. Without the high levels of hormones to help maintain it, the thick womb lining that has been built up starts to break down, and your body sheds the lining. This is the start of your period and the beginning of your next menstrual cycle.
As the empty follicle shrinks, if the fertilized egg has not implanted into the womb, your level of progesterone decreases. The womb no longer needs to maintain an environment to support a baby so your body needs to reset ready for the next cycle. Any PMT symptoms that you have will start to decrease. Without the high levels of hormones to help maintain it, the thick womb lining which has built up starts to breakdown and your body will shed this. This is the start of your period and the beginning of your next cycle. For illustration purposes only
If the egg has been fertilized and implanted into the womb, the empty follicle is maintained by the increasing level of pregnancy hormone . It continues to produce estrogen and progesterone for much longer until the placenta is mature enough to support the developing embryo. For illustration purposes only
If the egg has been fertilized, it may successfully implant itself into the womb lining. This usually takes place about a week after fertilization.

How Long Should A Normal Menstrual Cycle Last
An average menstrual cycle lasts 28 days, defined from the first day of menstrual bleeding to the first day of bleeding of the next period. However, irregular periods are very common. An irregular period is defined as a cycle that varies by more than seven to nine days.
There are several reasons why women may have abnormal periods, which can include fibroids, ovarian cysts, polyps, and even something as common as stress.
If youve constantly had an irregular period, please contact us for an appointment to determine the underlying cause and initiate treatment, said Dr. Martinelli.
Discharge Changes When You Ovulate
The changes in your discharge over the course of your menstrual cycle also hold clues about when you might be ovulating.
If your cervical mucus is
- Dry or sticky: Its unlikely youre ovulating
- Creamy: Ovulation may be coming
- Wet or watery: Ovulation may start soon
- Wet and stretchy : You may be at your day of ovulation
Its worth noting that cervical mucus is just one component of vaginal discharge, which can also include vaginal lubrication, arousal fluid and more.
Again, making such observations is not an exact science and no womans body is a clock. But if you keep a period diary and ovulation calendar, it might be worthwhile to also note any observable changes to cervical mucus. Over time, you may see a pattern emerge.

Using Ovulation Test Kits
Ovulation predictor kits are available from chemists and are quite easy to use. They work by detecting a hormone in your wee that increases when ovulation is about to take place. The simplest urine kits test for luteinising hormone , which surges 24 to 36 hours before ovulation. This will help to identify the best 2 days for conception, although you can be fertile for a day or so before and after this time.
It is best to become familiar with your usual menstrual cycle to help figure out when you should start testing. If you have an irregular cycle, then an ovulation predictor kit can help you identify the time of ovulation, but you will probably end up using a lot more of the test strips. There is also no evidence that using an ovulation predictor kit will improve your chances of getting pregnant naturally.
