Why Do I Keep Spotting After My Period

Can Spotting After A Period Be A Sign Of Pregnancy

Implantation Bleeding Vs Period â (How to Know the Difference?) ð©¸ð©¸

Yes it can. Implantation bleeding is generally light and short, just a few days’ worth. It usually occurs 10-14 days after conception, or around the time of your missed period. However, vaginal bleeding has been reported anytime in the first eight weeks of pregnancy. Spotting is also common before the start of a menstrual period.

What Is Abnormal Uterine Bleeding

Abnormal uterine bleeding is the name doctors use to describe when something isn’t quite right with a girl’s periods. Doctors also sometimes call AUB “dysfunctional uterine bleeding” . Like lots of medical names, it can sound worse than it is. Most of the time, AUB isn’t something to worry about.

Abnormal uterine bleeding means that periods may be heavier or last longer than normal or not come at all. Bleeding between periods is also a sign of AUB. AUB isn’t usually a major problem, but it can lead some girls to develop anemia .

If a girl has AUB, it might mean her periods last longer or have more bleeding than normal. Or, it might mean the opposite that her bleeding is light and her periods aren’t coming as often as they should.

Because AUB isn’t usually a problem, doctors often don’t do anything about it. But sometimes they take action if a medical condition is causing AUB. Doctors also might treat AUB if it is causing another problem. For example, doctors may worry that a girl could get if she is bleeding more than she should.

When Should I See My Doctor

Bleeding between periods is common in fact, it happens to most women at some point during their lives. However, it is not considered normal to bleed frequently in one month, or to bleed between your periods for several months. Bleeding after having sex should always be discussed with your doctor. There are many possible causes for bleeding between periods and a lot of them arent serious, but you should speak to your doctor if you bleed between periods as it can occasionally signal something serious.

Physical Conditions And Infections

Spotting can also be caused by infections and physical changes in the reproductive tract, or hormonal imbalances. Physical conditions that can cause spotting episodes include fibroids , uterine or cervical polyps and endometriosis .

Pelvic inflammatory disease , which happens when certain pelvic infections go untreated, can also be another culprit for unscheduled spotting. Other symptoms of PID can include pain in the lower abdomen, unusual vaginal discharge, and fever . If you suspect you have spotting and other associated symptoms of PID or of physical pelvic conditions, itâs important to discuss this with your healthcare provider as soon as possible.

Urinary tract infections can cause bleeding from the urethra . Pain while urinating, paired with a small amount of blood on the toilet paper, might be signs of a UTI .

Consistently spotting after penetrative vaginal intercourse is not considered normal. Bleeding after sex is often caused by an issue with the cervix or polyps . Some people may experience spotting after their first intercourse experience, which is normal. If youâre noticing spotting after sex, talk to your healthcare provider.

What Are The Causes Of Early Bleeding

There are a number of causes of bleeding in early pregnancy which include:

Spotting or bleeding may occur shortly after conception, this is known as an implantation bleed. It is caused by the fertilised egg embedding itself in the lining of the womb. This bleeding is often mistaken for a period, and it may occur around the time your period is due.

Hormonal bleeding is when some women experience a light bleed at around four to eight weeks of pregnancy, or around the time their period would have been due. This can be very confusing for women who are pregnant and is the reason many women do not realise they are pregnant for a while. Again, it is totally normal. This usually settles around the 13th week of pregnancy as by this time the placenta is sufficiently developed to produce all of the hormones needed to sustain the pregnancy.

After the egg is fertilised, the fertilised egg then goes on to implant itself into the lining of the womb . Sometimes this results in a little bleeding that shows up on an early scan as a haematoma. This is not anything to worry about. When it happens the woman may notice a small amount of vaginal bleeding, but this is not necessarily the case.

The haematoma will gradually disappear and in most cases, the pregnancy remains safe.

Spotting Vs Bleeding What Is The Difference

According to staff from the Mayo Clinic, spotting occurs when you notice small amounts of blood when you are not expecting your period. The spots of blood are often seen after wiping when you have used the bathroom or you may notice them on your underwear.1

Whereas blood flow associated with spotting will generally be very minimal with a lighter color, bleeding, on the other hand, describes a heavier flow, usually with a darker color. Because blood from spotting is generally older than menstrual blood, spotting may be a darker, brown color that looks like rust marks or spots on underwear. Other causes of spotting may cause a lighter, pinkish color.

The pattern of bleeding and spotting is also different. Menstrual bleeding usually starts as very light bleeding or spotting and gradually gets heavier. The American Journal of Epidemiology reported that during the first 3 days women usually experience heavier bleeding. This gradually becomes lighter and the bleeding lasts an average of 5 days.22

Changes In Hormone Levels

How Do Homeless Women Cope With Their Periods? | Bustle

A common cause of spotting before or between periods is changes in hormone levels. Womens cycles are ruled by hormones and any sudden fluctuations in those hormone levels can cause unexpected bleeding or spotting.

Among the reasons for hormonal changesmany of which are entirely benignis the use of hormonal birth control. If you have recently started a new birth control pill or other hormonal birth control it may take a few months for your body to adjust. The changing levels of hormones can cause spotting for a week or a few days. Failing to take your pill at the same time every day may also lead to spotting.

Many women report spotting during ovulation, which is attributable to the changes in estrogen levels at that time of the month. Just before ovulation , levels of estrogen rise. Once the egg is released, estrogen decreases as progesterone increases. It is this shift in balance between the two hormones that can cause ovulation spotting. For some women who are trying to conceive, this can be a useful sign to help them know when ovulation is occurring.

Few Things That You Should Know

  • Spotting after your period may indicate pregnancy, but it is not always true. It may or may not be implantation bleeding, so you may want to take a pregnancy test to be sure.

  • You can become pregnant only after ovulation and successful fertilization, and the process usually starts at least 10 days after your menstrual cycle. Therefore, the possibility of you becoming pregnant immediately after your monthly period is quite low.

  • Spotting or bleeding 10 days after period ended is not associated with early miscarriage, unless you experience heavy bleeding that is accompanied with cramps.

When To See A Doctor

If vaginal bleeding between periods is heavy or persistent, a woman should seek medical advice.

Being aware of any other symptoms related to spotting between periods can help a doctor to diagnose an underlying medical issue.

If a woman has recently begun taking a hormonal contraceptive, bleeding may settle after 3-6 months. If it does not, see the prescribing doctor. It may be possible to change contraceptive methods to avoid this problem.

STIs are contagious and can cause long-term health problems. If a person suspects an STI is causing vaginal bleeding, they should see a medical professional for testing and treatment. Most STIs are curable, usually with antibiotics.

Treatment will depend on the underlying cause. Keeping track of when bleeding happens, how often it lasts, and how much blood is lost can help a doctor diagnoses a cause.

Cervical cancer testing, known as screening or a pap smear, checks for anything unusual in the tissue of the cervix. The American Cancer Society recommend that women should begin attending cervical screening at the age of 21.

There is no cure for PCOS, but it is possible to manage the symptoms. Treatment can include losing weight, taking hormonal contraceptives, and using metabolic treatments.
