What Does Fertile Mean On Period Tracker

Short Menstrual Cycle And Fertility

What does a Heavy Period mean for fertility? | The Fertility Expert

Here is how a short menstrual cycle affects your fertility:

What It Is

Menstrual cycles that are less than 21 days are considered to be short menstrual cycles. In other words, if less than 21 days have passed from the first day you got your period to the next time it begins, your cycle is short. This usually starts to happen naturally as you begin to hit menopause. If you are of childbearing age, a short cycle is not normal.

Impact on Fertility

If you have a short menstrual cycle, pregnancy becomes a challenge. It could be either one of two things: your egg supply is decreasing, as in the case of older women closer to hitting menopause, or your luteal phase is too short. The luteal phase is the most important phase if you are trying to conceive. It begins from the time of ovulation and will end only when you get your next period. If the phase is too short, even if your egg has been fertilised, it will not have enough time to latch on in the uterus before being flushed out during your period.

Check Your Cervical Mucus

The same hormones that control your menstrual cycle also affect the mucus that your cervix makes. Just before and during ovulation, the amount, color, and texture of it change to make it easier for you to get pregnant.

As your ovaries prepare to release an egg, your cervix makes more mucus. A few days before ovulation, it may be sticky and cloudy or whitish. Then, right before you ovulate, the mucus gets slippery, like egg whites. It may stretch across your fingers if you spread them apart. This stage usually lasts 3 or 4 days, which is when you’re most likely to get pregnant.

To check your cervical mucus:

  • Use your fingers or a tissue to check the opening of your vagina for mucus a few times a day. Make sure your hands are clean before you start. Write down whether it’s cloudy and sticky or clear and slippery.
  • Chart your cervical mucus changes and your basal body temperature to get a clear picture of where you are in your cycle.

Keep in mind that other things, like breastfeeding, can change your mucus. Using douches or other hygiene products can also affect it. Gynecologists usually don’t recommend these products.

Period Tracker Vs Iperiod Vs Period Diary: User Interface

Period Tracker uses a standard type of navigation with a main splash screen that gives you an overview of your current or next expected cycle. Along the top you’ll see an expected start date . Underneath that you’ll see a countdown to your next cycle. When you start you can tap the Period just started button on the main screen. It will turn into a period end button that you can tap when it’s over.

Along the bottom you’ve got a navigation menu to view more detailed information. You can add notes, view a full calendar, view logs and charts, change settings, or jump into the social section.

The calendar view will give you a complete month or list view of any symptoms or events for that month. There are also icons that represent different things such as your period dates, fertile days, ovulation, intimate encounters, spotting, and more. You can add moods and symptoms to the calendar at any time by just clicking the “+” sign in the upper right hand corner of the calendar. Here you can take notes, add symptoms for a specific day, log your moods, and enter your temperature, weight, and more.

The charts and logs section will show you either a list log of periods or you can tap charts and view charts for menstrual cycle lenths, numbers of days your period lasts, symptoms, weight, temperature, and moods.

Garmin Menstrual Tracking: What Is It

Garmins new menstrual cycling tracking feature allows you to track your period, and a range of other symptoms, as well as see predictions about when your next period is due. Although design and data can differ, there are lots of period tracking apps on the market, including Clue, Dot Fertility and Natural Cycles, just to name a few, which all offer a similar experience.

What Garmin is offering here isnt new. But whats interesting, and promising, about this move is that information about your menstrual cycle could feed into what Garmin already knows about you data about menstruation, fitness, sleep and stress is now, essentially, in one place. Or at least thats what companies like Garmin, Fitbit and Apple want to be the ultimate health-tracking solution so you only need one wearable and one app.

Although it sounds a bit ominous that one company might know everything about you, from how you slept last night to whether youre ovulating right now and what you had for dinner today, its also extremely useful.

For example, you might be able to better understand how your sleep is affected by your menstrual cycle and make changes to improve it. You could figure out what exercises are best suited to your energy levels around the time of ovulation or show your GP how your moods are changing a lot depending on your cycle.

Why Fertility Apps Can Be Helpful

What Does Fertile Window Mean

While fertility apps may not be able to accurately predict ovulation, Dr. Chan says they can help women become more aware of their menstrual cycleespecially if they want to get pregnant.

“Before they are trying to get pregnant, people don’t really keep track,” Dr. Chan says. “When they bring the data collected from the fertility app to me, it’s really useful. I can see how long their cycles are.”

How Accurate Are Fertility Apps

Dr. Jessica Chan, a Fertility and Reproductive Medicine expert at Cedars-Sinai, says that all menstrual cycle apps use approximate dates to figure out when a woman might be ovulating.

“Unless someone is checking ovulation through physical means, like by using an ovulation prediction kit, the cycle app is just providing an estimate of when their fertile days are,” Dr. Chan says.

In fact, a 2018 study found that the accuracy of prediction by menstrual cycle apps was no better than 21%.

Garmin Menstrual Tracking: Insights

The Garmin menstrual tracking feature also offers up something a bit different, and very useful, and thats personalised insights based on whereabouts in your cycle you are.

Essential reading:

Some period tracking apps already deliver these kinds of insights, but more often than not theyre useless or patronising along the lines of telling you to stock up on tampons and ice-cream as PMS is about to kick in.

Garmins insights, however, are different because they feel relevant and geared up to fitness and performance. For example, on Cycle Day 13 Garmin says my body should be able to handle more endurance-based training today.

Fair enough, this nugget of info is small, and will need to be expanded on to become indispensable in the face of mounting competition from other apps and wearables, but this kind of insight is a step in the right direction.

More personalised information is something we are increasingly looking for from health and fitness tech and something that brands like Garmin, Fitbit and Apple should be able to provide the more data they collect about us.

This is where the big benefit of having female health tracking tech within established wearable ecosystems could be its another way to find out more about you. But the key is converting that data into useful insights rather than more charts, graphs and cold, hard stats.

Track Your Most Fertile Days

Generally, the best chance of pregnancy is when sex happens 1-2 days before ovulation. If you have a regular 28-day cycle, count back 14 days from when you expect your next period to start. Plan on having sex every other day around that time — say, days 12 and 14. Keep in mind that having sex every day may lower a man’s sperm count. Your cycle may be longer or shorter, so an online ovulation calculator may help you figure out the likely day.

Garmin Menstrual Tracking: Getting Set Up

Trying to Conceive? Try These Top Tips to Boost Your ...

Setting up menstrual tracking on the Garmin Connect app is unnecessarily confusing. Thats because youll need to download the Connect IQ app for menstrual tracking. But we couldnt do that from within the app itself. You have to do it from the separate Connect IQ app or opening Garmin Express on a laptop, plugging in your compatible Garmin device and adding it that way. Granted this only took 15 minutes in total, but it felt like a lot of hassle for what should have been a simple process.

A note on compatibility too. The Menstrual Cycle Tracking feature will work with the Forerunner 645 Music, vívoactive 3, vívoactive 3 Music and fnix 5 Plus Series watches. Garmin plans to add the functionality to the Fenix 5 Series, Fenix Chronos, Forerunner 935, Forerunner 945, Forerunner 645, Forerunner 245 and Forerunner 245 Music at a later date too.

Once installed, you can head to the app, click on Health & Performance, then scroll down to Menstrual Cycle. Youll then be asked a series of questions to get started, including your average cycle length, when your last period was and which kind of contraception youre using.

How Does Natural Cycles Calculate The Fertile Window

The Natural Cycles app is powered by an algorithm that analyses temperature data to predict and identify ovulation. This technology means the app can learn your unique cycle and removes an element of human error involved in traditional fertility awareness-based methods. Its also completely hormone-free.

The app works in two ways: prevent mode and plan mode so you can tailor it to your reproductive health needs. Natural Cycles provides a daily fertility status and, as birth control, tells you if you need to use protection to prevent pregnancy. Natural Cycles does not protect against STIs.

    What Is The Fertile Window

Contrary to popular belief, you cant get pregnant every day of your cycle. There is actually a small number of days when its possible to conceive. So, what is the fertile window? Read on to find out when you are most fertile, whens the best time to get pregnant, and how understanding the fertile window can also prevent pregnancy.

    Should You Track Ovulation

    Do irregular periods mean infertility?

The short answer: It depends on what you want and need.

“The most obvious reason someone would want to track their ovulation would be focused around the potential to become pregnant,” Nicole Telfer, naturopathic doctor and science content producer at Clue told CNET. “A person can only become pregnant if they have unprotected sex five days before ovulation, plus up to 24 hours after ovulation has occurred. It’s actually a relatively short time frame.”

And even then, a mature egg only lives 12 to 24 hours after release from the ovaries, so try to have sex within that window if conception is the goal.

Another problem is, Telfer says, ovulation does not happen at exactly the same time and can change from cycle to cycle. People who want to get pregnant often track their cycles and ovulation to help them determine when would be the ideal time to plan sex so that their chances of conception increase.

Other than pregnancy, here are a few reasons you may want to track ovulation:

Tracking ovulation may help you avoid pregnancy. On the flip side, if you’re not trying to get pregnant at the moment, tracking your ovulation can assist with contraception efforts.

“For those who are not ready for a baby, tracking ovulation is a great way to know when you should be extra careful,” Janell Sanford, Pharm.D. and Pill Club pharmacist-in-charge told CNET, “and perhaps double up on hormonal and non-hormonal contraception to avoid getting pregnant.”
