What It Is
Menstrual cycles that are less than 21 days are considered to be short menstrual cycles. In other words, if less than 21 days have passed from the first day you got your period to the next time it begins, your cycle is short. This usually starts to happen naturally as you begin to hit menopause. If you are of childbearing age, a short cycle is not normal.
Impact on Fertility
If you have a short menstrual cycle, pregnancy becomes a challenge. It could be either one of two things: your egg supply is decreasing, as in the case of older women closer to hitting menopause, or your luteal phase is too short. The luteal phase is the most important phase if you are trying to conceive. It begins from the time of ovulation and will end only when you get your next period. If the phase is too short, even if your egg has been fertilised, it will not have enough time to latch on in the uterus before being flushed out during your period.
Check Your Cervical Mucus
The same hormones that control your menstrual cycle also affect the mucus that your cervix makes. Just before and during ovulation, the amount, color, and texture of it change to make it easier for you to get pregnant.
As your ovaries prepare to release an egg, your cervix makes more mucus. A few days before ovulation, it may be sticky and cloudy or whitish. Then, right before you ovulate, the mucus gets slippery, like egg whites. It may stretch across your fingers if you spread them apart. This stage usually lasts 3 or 4 days, which is when you’re most likely to get pregnant.
To check your cervical mucus:
- Use your fingers or a tissue to check the opening of your vagina for mucus a few times a day. Make sure your hands are clean before you start. Write down whether it’s cloudy and sticky or clear and slippery.
- Chart your cervical mucus changes and your basal body temperature to get a clear picture of where you are in your cycle.
Keep in mind that other things, like breastfeeding, can change your mucus. Using douches or other hygiene products can also affect it. Gynecologists usually don’t recommend these products.

The charts and logs section will show you either a list log of periods or you can tap charts and view charts for menstrual cycle lenths, numbers of days your period lasts, symptoms, weight, temperature, and moods.

While fertility apps may not be able to accurately predict ovulation, Dr. Chan says they can help women become more aware of their menstrual cycleespecially if they want to get pregnant.
“Before they are trying to get pregnant, people don’t really keep track,” Dr. Chan says. “When they bring the data collected from the fertility app to me, it’s really useful. I can see how long their cycles are.”

How Accurate Are Fertility Apps
“Unless someone is checking ovulation through physical means, like by using an ovulation prediction kit, the cycle app is just providing an estimate of when their fertile days are,” Dr. Chan says.
In fact, a 2018 study found that the accuracy of prediction by menstrual cycle apps was no better than 21%.
Garmin Menstrual Tracking: Insights
The Garmin menstrual tracking feature also offers up something a bit different, and very useful, and thats personalised insights based on whereabouts in your cycle you are.
Some period tracking apps already deliver these kinds of insights, but more often than not theyre useless or patronising along the lines of telling you to stock up on tampons and ice-cream as PMS is about to kick in.
Garmins insights, however, are different because they feel relevant and geared up to fitness and performance. For example, on Cycle Day 13 Garmin says my body should be able to handle more endurance-based training today.
Fair enough, this nugget of info is small, and will need to be expanded on to become indispensable in the face of mounting competition from other apps and wearables, but this kind of insight is a step in the right direction.
More personalised information is something we are increasingly looking for from health and fitness tech and something that brands like Garmin, Fitbit and Apple should be able to provide the more data they collect about us.

Garmin plans to add the functionality to the Fenix 5 Series, Fenix Chronos, Forerunner 935, Forerunner 945, Forerunner 645, Forerunner 245 and Forerunner 245 Music at a later date too.
Once installed, you can head to the app, click on Health & Performance, then scroll down to Menstrual Cycle. Youll then be asked a series of questions to get started, including your average cycle length, when your last period was and which kind of contraception youre using.
