Get To Know The Element Characters
Each element has its own set of characteristics that could almost be called its personality. Thats the idea behind these incredibly fun cards, which imagine the elements as living characters. You could use a set of these for all kinds of periodic table activities.

Symbols And How They Are Derived
One may ask, How is the symbol of an element derived? We can see in the table above that most of the symbols are derived from the elements names, by taking either the first or first two letters from the English name of the element.
Some symbols of a few elements are derived from their Latin or Greek names. Let us look at some examples:
The Latin name for gold is Aurum. Hence gold is denoted by the symbol Au.
The symbol ‘Fe’ is used to denote Iron, as the Latin word for Iron is “Ferrum”.

What Is The Periodic Table Of Chemical Elements
The Periodic table of chemical elements is a structured table with a sequence of chemical elements arranged in strict order with the periodic law of chemistry.
This is a clear example of the periodic law, which was formulated by Dmitry Ivanovich Mendeleev in 1869. Nowadays, the formulation of this law is as follows: the elements of the table have changes in their properties in accordance with certain periods.
In order to realize the structure of the periodic table of chemical elements, you must first understand what a chemical element is.
Build The Atomic Structure
The Bohr atom models might seem complicated, but building little atom models is a great way to understand the structure of atoms. Use pipe cleaners and pompoms to make the models and download these simple atomic model cards to go along with them.
Adding a 3-D element is a great way to get the students more involved.

Best Periodic Table For Kids Video
Periodic table is a way to list elements. It is called periodic because elements are lined up in cycles or periods. At first glance, it looks very complex. This listing is done according to the structure of their atoms. It is decided on the basis of number of protons and electron in their outer shell. All the elements are listed in the order of their atomic number, which is same as the no. of protons in each atom. Elements are listed in order of increasing atomic number.
- The Periodic Table was first proposed by Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869. Mendeleevs table contained 63 known elements.
- Now it contains 109 different elements. Each element is of unique type.
- Mendeleevs periodic table had some blank spaces for some unknown elements. And he predicted the weights and chemical behaviour of those missing elements correctly.
- Most of the elements are metals.
- 90 of the 109 elements are found in nature and 19 are only created in laboratories.
- The rows of the periodic table are called periods and columns are called groups.
- There are total 18 groups in the periodic table.
- Atoms with atomic numbers higher than 92 do not exist. However, they can be created in laboratory by bombarding elements with other elements or their pieces.
- Technetium was the first element to be made artificially.
- An elements period number is the highest unexcited energy level for an electron of that element.

Noteworthy Scientist: George Gabriel Stokes 1819
George Gabriel Stokes was an accomplished British mathematician in the 19th Century, but throughout his career, he emphasized the importance of experimentation and problem solving rather than focusing solely on mathematics.
Most of Stokes work revolved around waves and how they move through various mediums, such as water and gas. He experimented with how wind affects the intensity of a sound and how the intensity is influenced by the type of gas the sound waves travel through. He named and explained fluorescence and investigated the wave theory of light. He also worked on understanding the different colored bands that could be seen in a spectrum and made significant contributions to what we know about light and optics.
Stokes is often compared to Sir Isaac Newton because there are numerous parallels between Stokes life and Newtons life: both had breakthrough discoveries, developed laws of motion, investigated light and optics, held the same prestigious Lucasian Chair of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, and served in Parliament.

Memorize The Periodic Table
Memorize the periodic table?? I must admit. I was skeptical that my kids could actually memorize the periodic table. Learn about it, yes. Memorize the whole thing, not so much.
My thoughts wandered to rote memorization and dry drills that would cause my kids to roll on the floor in protest. Their poor little minds would forever be scarred with the aversion to all things chemistry.
Memorizing off a list or chart is not fun for many people and that information can be hard to recall. My kids would need something a little more interactive and more fun. Where in the world would I find that??
I was introduced to theMemorize The Periodic online video program as an alternative to the boring memorization route. It looked interesting so I thought wed give it a try.
Memorize The Periodic Table uses the Link and Story method. This method has been shown to improve recall by between 200% and 700%. In the link and story method, the elements of the periodic table are used as prompts for humorous stories with entertaining graphics and illustrations.
My kids laughed their way through the videos and laughed even more when recalling the elements and the story prompts. The best part is they actually memorized the periodic table! Well, not all of it. They are still working on it, but are over half way through in just 3 days! They even retained what the learned after several days between lesson day 2 and 3.

Elements Are Arranged In Order Of Increasing Atomic Number
Elements of the Periodic Table are denoted by a unique symbol and not its entire name, as some elements names can be long and complex in nature.
Elements are arranged vertically and horizontally. Elements arranged vertically in columns are called Groups and elements arranged horizontally in rows are called Periods.
Further elements are grouped as per periodic trends and properties. Example: Elements in group 1A are soft metals that react violently with water.

How Do You Teach The Periodic Table To Students
The periodic table is a complex concept but breaking it down into smaller, more palatable sections is the best way to ensure a firm understanding of the table. Element symbols are one of the first things students can learn.
Understanding the properties of elements can easily be taught too as students can sing songs, make diagrams, and build models.
Element game cards or an element identification game are easy ways to turn the periodic table into an interactive game to help students identify all the elements.
Internet activities are also an important resource as students can learn more about elements on their own time too.

How To Make The Periodic Table Game:
To make the Periodic Table Battleship game, print out 4 copies of the Periodic Table.
Along the left side of the table, I labeled the rows alphabetically. They already have row numbers along the top. Laminating makes it re-usable!
I used two file folders and hooked them together at the top with a giant paper clip. Attach two of the periodic tables in with that paper clip as well. Then lay the other two periodic tables down on the table in the folder. If you want it to be more permanent you can glue them on or attach with double sided tape.
Make it a bit more complicated by requiring them to have a ship in each of the sections: alkali metals, transition metals, noble gases, halogens, etc.
You play by calling out coordinates, atomic numbers, atomic symbols, or element names. If you miss you put an X on the spot you chose on the upper table.
If you get a hit, then circle it. You can continue playing until one person sinks all of another persons ships. You sink a ship by hitting all the spots in a row the other person circled.
You can begin to get them familiar with the various parts of the table, the properties of the elements, how the elements are arranged, the atomic weight, the element symbols, the number of protons, the number of electrons, their atomic mass, and the order of their atomic number, etc.
