A: Irregular bleeding is the most common side effect of birth control pills. It is especially common during the first three months as your body adjusts to the hormones in the medication. However, other things can cause prolonged bleeding too. If the bleeding is especially heavy , persists throughout the whole month or occurs only with intercourse especially if youve stopped using condoms you should see your womens health care provider to make sure nothing more serious is going on.
The most common cause of irregular bleeding is missed pills, so make sure you are taking the pill every day, and at the same time every day.
Birth control pills can cause a lot of other side effects, especially bloating, nausea and breast tenderness. Most side effects resolve after a few months, but the clinicians in our Womens Services Department usually recommend that you check in with your health care provider after your first 3 months on the pill to make sure everything is going OK. How To Take Loestrin Pills
Before taking any medication, follow the directions from your physician and on the prescription label.
You may have to use backup birth control when you begin taking this pill.
Talk to your physician about which day is best for you to start taking Loestrin pills. It is important to take it at the same time every day .
Take the first Loestrin tablet in the pack on the first Sunday following the beginning of your menstrual period or on the first day of your period. Pick a time that you are able to take the pill consistently every day and that you will easily remember . Take one pill each day until the pack is empty. Then start a new pack the very next day so that no days pass without taking a pill.
Loestrin 24 comes with: 24 blue pills, 2 white pills, and 2 brown pills. Loestrin 24 blue pills are active combination pills . The 2 white pills are also active but only contain the estrogen. The last 2 brown pills are non-hormonal pills that contain ferrous fumarate, or iron. They are there to remind you to keep taking a pill every day.
Tell your physician if bleeding is quite significant or if it occurs at unexpected times throughout the month.
Inform your doctor and use a backup birth control if you experience diarrhea or acute vomiting .
Since a prescription is required, youll need to see your physician regularly while taking birth control pills.

Sometimes the non-hormonal pills also have supplements in them, like iron, which can be helpful for your general health but arent needed for pregnancy prevention.
If you skip your non-hormonal pills and jump right to your next pill pack without taking any break, you can skip your period. You can do this every once in a while , or you can do it every month. Its totally safe to skip your period using birth control pills, and it wont affect how well they work to prevent pregnancy. If you do this, you may have some spotting, especially if you havent done it before or only do it every now and then. This is totally normal and safe.
If you dont take the hormone-free pills and instead take a break from pill-taking, youll still get your period. Just make sure you remember to start your next pack on time, or youll be at risk for pregnancy.

Is anyone here ttc after bc? Im starting to get frustrated and regret taking bc. I got off of Loestrin in Oct 2012. I got AF on Nov 25, Dec 26th and January 19th. AF was very light about 3 days long each cycle.
I decided to do OPK clear blue digital and got a smiley face on CD 23 in February!! BD and followed SMEP. I believe Im 15 DPO today. I checked HPT this evening and got BFN!!!

Try to take your pill at the same time every day . If you miss 1 or more pills, take it as soon as you remember and double up to catch up in your pill pack. Be aware that you will probably have some bleeding for a few days and it is ok to continue taking the pill.
The 21 and 24 day pill packs have placebo pills and your period will usually start after the first or second sugar pill. It is ok to restart a new pill pack even if you are still on your period.
