Things To Think About

In the early days and weeks of pregnancy, you may not know if youre pregnant.

But you can do the following things:

  • take a folic acid supplement of 400 micrograms a day while youre trying to get pregnant and until the 12th week of pregnancy
  • take a vitamin D supplement of 10 micrograms a day
  • avoid some foods to protect against infections
  • stopping smoking is one of the best things you can do for your babys health

You can get supplements from pharmacies and supermarkets, or your GP may be able to prescribe them for you.

If you want to get your vitamin D or folic acid from a multivitamin tablet, make sure the tablet does not contain vitamin A .

You can get vitamin supplements containing folic acid and vitamin D free of charge if youre under 18, pregnant or breastfeeding and qualify for the Healthy Start scheme.

Could Things Get Worse

Yes. The Prime Minister and Transport Secretary are pressing ahead with plans to introduce minimum service levels on the railway.

A Government source said over the weekend: The Government stood on a manifesto commitment to introduce minimum service levels. As we have seen only too often in recent months, it is wrong that strikes are preventing hard-working people and families up and down the country from getting to work, doctors appointments and school.

That is why we are introducing this legislation, to keep Britain moving, ensure people can get to work, earn their own living and grow the economy.

The plans were ridiculed by Aslef. Mr Whelan said: The trouble is that Truss doesnt understand the way the railway works.

The train companies dont want to run minimum service levels because they know its a stupid idea. What happens when 100% of passengers try to get on 40% minimum service level trains? It will look like Japan where they cram people in like cattle. And the rolling stock will, next day, be in the wrong place. Which will mess up the normal timetable.

The Government claims that similar legislation exists in other European countries, such as Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. Yes, it does. But what the Government doesnt know or doesnt choose to say is that it is not enforced. Because they know it doesnt work.

Working Out Your Due Date

1-minute read

Once you have confirmed that you are pregnant, you will want to find out when your baby is due to arrive. The average pregnancy is calculated at 282 days from the first day of your last menstrual period.

However babies rarely keep to an exact timetable, so a full-term pregnancy can be anywhere between 37 and 42 weeks. A baby born before 37 weeks is considered to be premature and anything past 42 weeks is considered overdue.

Due dates are usually calculated on your last period instead of the date of conception because of a number of reasons.

  • Although the average woman ovulates approximately 2 weeks after her period, the exact time is not always known.
  • Once an egg has been released, it can remain fertile for up to 24 hours.
  • Sperm can last for up to 5 days after intercourse to fertilise an egg.

If your periods are irregular or you are unsure of the date, an ultrasound will help determine the development of the embryo and your due date. Ultrasound scans can be done at any stage of pregnancy after the first 6 weeks. The best timing for an ultrasound to determine the due date is between 8 weeks and 13 weeks 6 days.

You can use the Pregnancy, Birth and Baby due date calculator to work out when your baby is due.

Some doctors will refer to your due date as ‘expected date of confinement’ or EDC.

Can I get pregnant 12 days after my period ends?

Pay attention to your emotions

When you’re waiting to learn whether you’re pregnant or not, or just finding out, it’s normal to be more anxious than usual. If you’re feeling stressed or worried, talk to your partner or a trusted friend. Or, try writing down everything that’s bothering you. Journaling can improve your emotional well-being, mental clarity, and even physical health.

Avoid overheating

Hot baths are okay during pregnancy as long as they aren’t too hot. But avoid steam baths, hot tubs, and saunas. Elevated body temperature, especially early in pregnancy, has been associated with an increased risk of neural tube defects in babies.

Eat nutritious meals and snacks

Eat foods that support conception and pregnancy such as fruits and vegetables, low-mercury fish, and whole grains. Choose foods containing vitamin C , iron , and calcium . For snack ideas, check out 10 of our favorite healthy snacks for expecting moms.

Cut down on coffee

While you’re trying to conceive and once you get pregnant, experts recommend limiting your intake of caffeine to about one cup of coffee a day. It’s important to watch your consumption of coffee and caffeine overall because excessive caffeine can affect your pregnancy and your baby. See how much caffeine is in different foods and drinks.

Get help quitting

If you need help quitting smoking, drinking, or taking drugs, talk to your healthcare provider and ask for a referral to a program or counselor.

Comprehensive Explanation Of The Menstrual Cycle:

The menstrual cycle has three phases:

1. Follicular Phase

This phase of the menstrual cycle occurs from approximately day 1-14. Day 1 is the first day of bright red bleeding, and the end of this phase is marked by ovulation. While menstrual bleeding does happen in the early part of this phase, the ovaries are simultaneously preparing to ovulate again. The pituitary gland releases a hormone called FSH follicle stimulating hormone. This hormone causes several follicles to rise on the surface of the ovary. These fluid filled bumps each contain an egg. Eventually, one of these follicle becomes dominant and within it develops a single mature egg the other follicles shrink back. If more than one follicle reaches maturity, this can lead to twins or more. The maturing follicle produces the hormone estrogen, which increases over the follicular phase and peaks in the day or two prior to ovulation. The lining of the uterus becomes thicker and more enriched with blood in the second part of this phase , in response to increasing levels of estrogen. High levels of estrogen stimulate the production of gonadotropin-releasing hormone , which in turn stimulates the pituitary gland to secrete luteinizing hormone . On about day 12, surges in LH and FSH cause the egg to be released from the follicle. The surge in LH also causes a brief surge in testosterone, which increases sex drive, right at the most fertile time of the cycle.

2. Ovulatory Phase

What Is An Interruption Of Earnings

An interruption of earnings occurs in the following situations:

When an employee has had or is anticipated to have seven consecutive calendar days with no work and no insurable earnings from the employer, an interruption of earnings occurs. This situation is called the seven-day rule. For example, the seven-day rule applies when employees quit their jobs or are laid off, or when their employment is terminated . When the seven-day rule applies, the first day of the interruption of earnings is considered the last day for which paid .

When an employees salary falls below 60% of regular weekly earnings because of illness, injury, quarantine, pregnancy, the need to care for a newborn or a child placed for the purposes of adoption or the need to provide care or support to a family member who is critically ill, an interruption of earnings occurs. In this case, the first day of the interruption of earnings is the Sunday of the week in which the salary falls below 60% of the regular weekly earnings.

How Are Due Dates Calculated

If you were having regular periods before pregnancy, your doctor will calculate your due date based off of your last menstrual period. This goes back to the fact that in order to get pregnant, your body ovulatedor released an eggroughly in the middle of your cycle and it was fertilized by sperm. That was the moment of conception.

To clarify, the gestational period of 40 weeks actually starts with the first day of your last period, which adds two weeks of time to the gestational period when your baby didnt even exist yetclear as mud, right? Is an ultrasound a more accurate way of finding out my due date?If you are having irregular cycles before getting pregnant, an ultrasound is usually done to find out how far along you are. An ultrasound is actually the most accurate way to date a pregnancy because all fetuses grow at a consistent rate during the first trimester and early second.

In other words, if your baby measures 9 weeks 2 days when you have your ultrasound, thats how far along you are, no matter when your last period was. Some women with regular cycles are confused about why their ultrasound due date doesnt match up with their last menstrual period due date. Ovulation isnt a perfect science and can happen earlier or later than the norm, which might shift your due date slightly.

How Accurate Is The Due Date

The pregnancy calculator gives you an approximate due date. It is worked out by adding 280 days to the first day of your last menstrual period. This is based on a 28-day cycle but is adjusted for longer or shorter cycles.

Your period and ovulation are counted as the first 2 weeks of pregnancy. If you have the baby on your due date, your baby has been growing for 38 weeks, not 40, but you are still classed as 40 weeks pregnant.

Remember that only around 5% of babies are born on their due date so its just an estimation.

The Diagnostic Uses Of Pregnancy Ultrasound

Apart from helping to pinpoint the unborn babys due date, pregnancy ultrasounds are used to diagnose a number of conditions including:

  • Multiple fetuses
  • Health problems with the baby
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Abnormalities of the placenta such as placenta praevia, where the placenta is positioned over the neck of the womb
  • The health of the mothers reproductive organs.

Calculating A Due Date

A typical pregnancy lasts, on average, 280 days, or 40 weeksstarting with the first day of the last normal menstrual period as day 1. An estimated due date can be calculated by following steps 1 through 3:

  • First, determine the first day of your last menstrual period.

  • Next, count back 3 calendar months from that date.

  • Lastly, add 1 year and 7 days to that date.

  • For example: Your last menstrual period began on September 9, 2010. Counting back 3 calendar months would be June 9, 2010. Adding 1 year and 7 days would bring you to June 16, 2011, as your estimated due date.

This 3-step method is referred to as Naegele’s Rule and is based on a normal 28-day menstrual cycle. Therefore, dates may have to be adjusted for longer or shorter menstrual cycles.

You may also estimate your delivery date by using the steps 1 and 2 and the chart:

  • First, locate the first day of your last menstrual period .

  • Next, note the date directly below. This is your estimated date of delivery .
