How To Avoid Your Period On Vacation

How To Stop Your Period Indefinitely

How to Delay Your Period for Vacation

#PeriodsOptional isnt just for vacation time. You can skip your periods indefinitely if you use the pill, the ring, or the patch by consistently using your birth control without break weeks.

However in trying to get to no periods, breakthrough bleeding or spotting may occur. If this happens, what you need to do next will depend on what method of birth control you use. For the pill, stop taking active pills for 5 days and then restart on day 6. For the ring, keep your ring out for 5 days and use a new one right on day 6. For the patch, remove your patch and place a new patch on your body on day 7.

If you routinely experience breakthrough bleeding or spotting, it is recommended that you talk to your doctor as soon as possible and use a backup method to prevent pregnancy, such as condoms or abstaining from vaginal intercourse.

If youre getting side effects and your doctor is not a birth control expert, Pandia Health is here to help. Our expert birth control doctors are available to prescribe the best birth control for you.

We pride ourselves on providing expert birth control care. Our doctors prescribe birth control based on the Pandia Health algorithm which takes into account several factors, including age, race/ethnicity, BMI, and your personal medical history, all of which can influence your bodys reaction to birth control. For example, if you are under 30 years old, its best to be on a method that has at least 30mcg of estrogen.

Fight Your Period Jiggle With Gelatin Wiggle

Once again, theres no science behind this, but some people claim that drinking gelatin that has been dissolved in warm water can push back your period for a few hours. To buy yourself even more time, its recommended that you drink the mixture repeatedly.

Aside from being rather unpalatable , drinking copious amounts of straight gelatin could trigger digestive distress and bloating.

Stress May Have An Impact

Stress is known to have the ability to disrupt a normal menstrual cycle. Hormones released during stress otherwise harm the overall health, but when it comes to a period, they have a more evolutionary, primal role.

Essentially, your bodys hormonal balance during stress will disrupt and result in late ovulation. In some women, ovulation may not even occur during stressful times.

Scientists explain this with the bodys strategy to avoid pregnancy in an uncertain environment. Essentially, stress signals that your body is under distress and not in a safe environment. In some cases, a mechanism to prevent pregnancy activate in form of period delay.

How this relates to traveling on your period? Not all trips and vacations are stress-free. You might have a great time, but if you drink too much and sleep too little, your body is actually suffering stress.

Stress can suppress the pituitary gland functions, affecting the production of estrogen, which in return disrupts the ovulation. You can trigger this body response even if you mentally feel good, excited and entertained if youre partying too much and sleeping too little.

Whenever your sleep cycle gets disrupted, theres a possibility for your menstrual cycle to fall out of order as well. If youre switching time zones, your circadian rhythm also falls out of balance.

Is There Anyone Who Should Avoid Taking Norethisterone

Norethisterone is safe for the majority of women, Wilson says. It should not be used for women who have suffered with liver tumours, breast cancer, a history of jaundice during pregnancy, and severe vascular disease.

You should avoid taking the medication if you are pregnant or think you could be, if you are breastfeeding, if you have abnormal vaginal bleeding that hasnt been investigated by a doctor, or if you have a known, suspected or past history of genital or breast cancer .

Those who have recently had angina, a heart attack or a stroke caused by a blood clot should also avoid taking norethisterone.

Dr Lucinda Farmer, spokesperson for the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare , says norethisterone has been shown to be partly metabolised to become the oestrogen hormone ethinylestradiol.

Women being prescribed 5 mg of norethisterone to postpone menstruation could be exposed to 20-60 mcg of ethinylestradiol a day, which is equivalent to the amount found in two combined contraceptive pills, she says. Care should be taken when prescribing these doses of norethisterone in women with contra-indications to the combined pill, especially women presenting with risk factors for venous thromboembolism.

I travel on my period all the time and these tips for dealing with your period always get me through. I may have bled on a few ancient sites, plane seats, and even all over Graceland, but I lived to tell the tale. And you can too.

How To Delay Your Period For Your Holiday

Because the beach + period can be a faff

Technically speaking, you can do whatever you like when youre on your period from sex to swimming, you should never feel like anything is off limits to you because of your uterus. But between the cramps, the mood swings, the bloating, and obviously the bleeding, its also totes fair enough if your period and your holiday are not a match you want to make.

The good news is that with a bit of forward planning, it is possible to put your period off until bikinis and beaches are safely off of your schedule. What you need is a medicine called Norethisterone, which can give you up to 17 days delay.

It comes in the form of tablets which you must start to take three days before your period is due, explains Dr Kieran Seyan, from the LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor Team. You must then take three tablets a day during the time you wish to delay your period. You can take the tablets for a maximum of 20 days, which will delay your period by a maximum of 17 days. When you get back from your break, you simply stop taking Norethisterone and your period should arrive 2-3 days later.

However, it might seem like a magical solution to all of your period-based problems, but as with any medication, Norethisterone is not without its caveats: Dr Kieran notes that it can cause side effects, and very rarely these can be serious including increased risk of blood clotting, stroke, acne, fluid retention, headache and nausea.

Is your period due during your vacation? Skip the bleed!

The patch, the pill, and the ring are 3 hormonal birth control options that allow you to skip your period entirely if you want a month off or want to enjoy your vacation without the stress of cramps and period upkeep.

If you are taking the birth control pill, patch or ring, there is no medical reason why you need to have a bleed every month, meaning you can skip your monthly bleed if you wish. To skip your bleed, all you need to do is make sure you skip the break/bleed week for the patch, ring, or dont take the sugar pill/placebo week for birth control pills and go straight into the next pack.

If you are using the combined birth control pill, simply skip the row of placebo pills or the week off after you finish three rows of active pills and go straight into the next pack. With the ring, change it after 28-30 days, rather than the usual 21, as it has 35 days of hormone in it. Similarly with the patch, just switch to a new patch after week three, rather than having a free week.

When skipping your period with the patch, you should NOT use it for more than 12 weeks in a row without having a bleed. Make sure to have a bleed at least every 12 weeks, otherwise, you will experience a build-up of estrogen and risk blood clots, which can lead to complications and even death.

First: Is It Safe To Delay Your Period At All

So theres some good news here: You absolutely can delay your periodand do it in safe way. But that can only be done with one specific hormonal birth control method: the combination pill .

A birth control pill has 21 days of hormones, usually ethinyl estradiol and progestin, and seven days of a placebo pill that prompts you to have an artificial period,Alyse Kelly-Jones, MD, an ob-gyn in Charlotte, North Carolina, tells Health. To delay your period, you would skip the placebo and immediately start a new pack of pills.

Doing this for just one cycle can delay your period by as much as another three weeks, says Dr. Kelly-Jones. The only caveat is that you need to plan accordingly and with plenty of notice if youre not already on hormonal birth control to begin with. If you come to me two weeks out from your wedding or vacation and arent already on birth control, I probably wont be able to help you, she says. At best, you might be able to delay it in time, but at worst, you might cause all kinds of irregular bleeding, which would be even less appealing.

Thats because, with your birth control pills already in place, your body is like a well-oiled machine, while starting birth control from scratch can sometimes be a lengthy process to find one that works with your body to your liking.

How To Fly Comfortably On Your Period

It can be quite tricky and uncomfortable to travel long distances while on your period. One of the most eventful flights of my life happens to also be the longest one I ever took. It was from New York City to Mumbai. It was 15 hours! I not only had my wisdom teeth decide to prove its existence and give me the worst pain of my life, but I also got my period. I learned to be prepared for it on a long flight. Here are some tips:

  • Get in an aisle seat so that you dont end up bothering people around you every time you need to use the bathroom.

  • Drink loads of water.

  • Pack your period kit in your carry-on luggage and if possible, keep it in your bag which you can keep with you instead of stowing it up.

  • Wear comfortable clothing.

  • Remember to change your tampon every 4-5 hours.

  • Do not drink alcohol.

  • Try and get tons of sleep!

This is something only we experience and our period should never ever stop us from travelling. After all, there is nothing more empowering than traveling on periods and it is always a great reminder for how strong and badass we women are!

Increase Lemon Infusion Intake

Using lemon is more effective if you accidentally get your period a bit early during your vacation or just a few days before your journey.

Lemon also boasts an acidic nature, which benefits in pushing back your menstrual cycle for some time. The acidic content detoxifies the body, shedding the uterine line quickly. This would temporarily cut off the period if you drink it during the cycle.

You can either mix lemon with vinegar and water and drink a combination of these foods. Or simply opt for a lemon water infusion.

    Dont Forget Pain Relief

Periods can be unpleasant and painful. Often accompanied by mild to severe cramps on the first day or two, they can put a damper on what should be a wonderful travel experience.

If youre planning to spend time exploring various locations and participating in walking tours, bring enough painkillers or other remedies to keep you pain-free and comfortable. Dont forget to pack a hot water bag to help ease your pain without any medication.

While it may sound like the last thing you want to do, exercise is also an effective and natural way to relieve period cramps. Your brain releases endorphins when you exercise, and endorphins do not just block pain, but they also trigger a positive feeling in your body, improving your mood and any depression or anxiety associated with your period. So, instead of staying in your hotel room, take a walk and enjoy the sights.

    What Doesnt Work

The internet is full of ideas and ways you can stop your period. But many of them are false. The following methods dont work at stopping your period:

    • Drinking lemon juice.
    • Drinking raspberry leaf tea.
    • Drinking pineapple juice.

Theres absolutely no science behind why these methods would work to stop your period, stresses Dr. Jhaveri. None of these ideas are going to provide enough hormone regulation to stop your period. You can potentially hurt yourself by trying random methods and they can cause irregular bleeding.

Your best course of action? Consult your doctor on the best way to stop your period.

Also, if you have high blood pressure or experience migraines with aura, its not recommended that you take estrogen, which can be found in many forms of birth control.

For most people, using some form of birth control to help stop their period is an option.

If you want to successfully stop your period, talk to your doctor, advises Dr. Jhaveri. Even during a virtual visit, doctors can offer a quick 15-minute consultation to find out your medical risk factors and the best way to stop your period with the amount of time that youre looking at.
