First Is It Safe To Skip Your Period

The short answer is, yes, you can safely skip your period by either ditching the placebo week and going directly to a new pack of pills, ring, or patch. Some people may naturally just stop getting their period over time while using certain forms of birth control.

The long answer, however, is a bit more involved. First, the period you get on hormonal birth control is not even really your period, its actually withdrawal bleeding, according to the Mayo Clinic. During a menstrual cycle without hormonal birth control, your endometrial lining thickens in anticipation of an embryo implanting. If pregnancy does not occur, your body sheds this lining, and you get your period. Since hormonal birth control works by suppressing ovulation , theres nothing extra to shed if you dont become pregnant. The bleeding is simply your bodys response to stopping the hormones.

You should have your period during your fourth week on the pill. When you start a fresh pack of tablets, your menstrual period will end. However, this does not mean that you cannot get pregnant while on the pill it is only because there are no new hormones in your system yet that prevents ovulation from happening again so quickly after your last period.

Will Taking Two Birth Control Pills In One Day Stop Your Period

Taking more than the prescribed number of pills in one day is not going to stop your period right away. Depending on how many you take, it may cause you to feel sick, but its not going to magically make your period disappear.

In fact, Dr. Dweck says there are instances in which taking two pills in one day is recommended to catch up for a missed pill. But whether or not it will eventually stop your period depends on your individual circumstances. Some people will have irregular bleeding after taking two pills, while others will remain on schedule, Dr. Dweck explains.

Whats Normal Bleeding While On The Contraceptive Pill

Your bodyâs response to your pill will depend on the type of pill you take, and your own bodyâs hormones. If youâre taking a typical 21/7 monophasic pill , bleeding may start on day two or three of your placebo week and last 3-5 days on average. A few people may have only one day of bleeding mid-week, and others may have bleeding that extends into their next pill pack. Up to 1 in 10 have no withdrawal bleeding at all .

Bleeding on the contraceptive pill is also likely to change over time. In people using the 24/4 day pill , about 1-2 in 10 had no significant withdrawal bleeding by the 6th pill pack . Bleeding also tended to decrease over time.

No bleeding can also signal a pregnancy. Take a pregnancy test if youâre unsure, especially if you havenât taken your pills correctly in the previous pack.

How To Keep Your Menstrual Cycle On Track

If you miss your period while on the pill and you havent missed any doses, pregnancy isnt likely. Instead, the hormones in the pill are likely the cause. If you miss a second period and havent missed any doses, pregnancy is still unlikely. At this point though, if youre sexually active, its still worth taking a pregnancy test or calling your doctor.

Your doctor can help you address any other factors that may be at play. After youve pinpointed the cause, you should be able to get your period back on a regular cycle. You may be able to do this in a number of ways:

  • Make sure you take time to relieve stress. Try breathing techniques, yoga, restorative walks, and even journaling to get at the root of your stress.
  • Eat a healthy diet and work to keep your weight in a normal range. If you suspect you have an eating disorder, tell a friend or your doctor so they can point you to the resources you need to get help.
  • Keep up with regular exercise. Your activity level may seem manageable to you, but see if stepping back a bit helps your regular bleeding resume.

The only time that a professional might want to tell someone else is if they believe youre at risk of harm, such as abuse. The risk would need to be serious, and they would usually discuss this with you first.

While we use the term spotting for bleeding between periods, that doesnt mean it only leaves a spot.

Sometimes, youll notice blood on toilet paper, but its not enough to continue flowing. Other times, breakthrough bleeding can resemble the flow of a regular period.

Spotting generally lasts less than a few days, so hold tight it should be over soon.

If you find youre soaking through a tampon or pad, call your healthcare provider.

While it isnt necessarily cause for alarm, theres a good chance heavy breakthrough bleeding will cause you to ditch your pill altogether, or signify that you may have other underlying causes, so discuss alternatives before deciding youre fed up.

When Is Not Having A Period Not Okay

Despite the many ways in which people can safely avoid having periods, it is very important to know that sometimes not having a period is a sign that something is wrong. If you are not using hormonal birth control and you are naturally not having your period, you may have a condition called amenorrhea. Primary amenorrhea refers to a someone age 15 or older who has not begun menstruating. Secondary amenorrhea refers to someone who used to have regular periods in the past, but then has stopped getting for more than three months in a row.

There are a lot of reasons why amenorrhea happens, such as hormone imbalances, stress, being overweight or underweight, use of certain drugs or medications, ovarian or uterine disorders and, of course, pregnancy. If you are not using hormonal birth control and you are not having your period, start by taking a pregnancy test. If the test is negative, make an appointment with your healthcare provider to find out what is going on. Amenorrhea can lead to serious health problems, such as endometrial cancer or bone loss, so it should not be ignored.

Do Birth Control Pills Cause Weight Gain

It is a misconception among many ladies today that birth control pills contribute to increased body weight. However, various studies have revealed that this is not actually possible. According to experts, the effects of birth control pills on the body weight are minimal, if any. However, the pills may make the body retain more fluids, hence making you feel as if you are gaining weight. This effect is particularly on the thighs, hips and breasts. The estrogen hormone in these pills can also make the adipose cells larger, but not cause weight gain.

Causes Of Missed Period On Birth Control

Nausea and Other Pregnancy Symptoms With a Negative Test

There are several potential causes of a missed period when youre taking birth control. They may include:

Stress

Stress is one of the most common causes of a missed period. Research shows that women under stress during their cycle are much more likely to experience irregular or missed periods.

Stress has a significant impact on the hormones within your body. These hormones have the ability to create changes or a delay in your menstrual period.

Changes in diet and exercise

Any drastic changes in eating habits can affect your menstrual cycle. Diet can affect hormone levels and ovulation. If either are disrupted, you may experience a delayed or missed period.

If you are incorporating new or increased physical activity into your regular activity, it may be disrupting your menstrual cycle. Prolonged periods of intense exercise can alter your hormone levels, leading to missed or suppressed menstruation.

Weight loss

Significant weight loss can lead to lighter or missed periods. The presence of fat in your body can increase the level of specific hormones in your body. Losing dramatic amounts of weight will impact your hormone levels. This often leads to irregular periods and can be an underlying cause of a missed period on birth control.

Long-term effects of continuous birth control

Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism directly affects hormone levels. Women who experience hypothyroidism almost always have irregular menstrual cycles.

Pregnancy

Is It Breakthrough Bleeding Or Implantation Bleeding

Its difficult to tell if the bleeding youre experiencing between cycles is breakthrough bleeding or implantation bleeding. Implantation bleeding is any bleeding or spotting you experience 10 to 14 days after conception. Some women experience this, and others may not.

Both may happen between normal menstrual cycles. Both may be light enough to not require a tampon or pad. That said, breakthrough bleeding can occur at any time, and implantation bleeding only happens a few days before a missed period.

The best way to tell if youre experiencing implantation bleeding is to either take a home pregnancy test or visit your doctor for a blood test.

How To Start Your Birth Control Pills

Try to take your pill at the same time every day . If you miss 1 or more pills, take it as soon as you remember and double up to catch up in your pill pack. Be aware that you will probably have some bleeding for a few days and it is ok to continue taking the pill.

The 21 and 24 day pill packs have placebo pills and your period will usually start after the first or second sugar pill. It is ok to restart a new pill pack even if you are still on your period.
