This sentence is saying that the person is going to the store, and the parentheses are just adding extra information.

But if you changed the sentence to Im going to the store, it would mean that the person is going to the store right now. So be careful with how you use parentheses and periods in your writing, because they can change the meaning of a sentence very easily!

When in doubt, it is usually better to leave the period outside parentheses. This will help keep your text easy to read and understand. However, there are a few exceptions to this rule. If the material inside the parentheses is a complete sentence, use a period at the end. If the material inside the parentheses is not a complete sentence, dont use a period.

If an entire sentence is contained in parentheses, put the period outside the closing parenthesis. Always consider what will make the text easiest to read and understand when deciding where to put a period in relation to a parenthesis.

Quick Summary Of Parentheses Punctuation

Parentheses are a pair of round brackets used to separate a parenthetical word or phrase from a sentence. Theyre used to enclose additional information in a sentence, or show that the information is an aside.

Lets look at when to use punctuation inside parentheses.

If the information inside the parentheses contains a list, you should separate the items with commas.

  • I love my pets , but Im not allowed to keep them in my new apartment.

If the parenthetical expression is a complete sentence that requires a period at the end, then the period goes inside the parentheses. Question marks and exclamation points that are part of the parenthetical material should also go inside the closing bracket.

  • Your sick brother wants you to visit.

However, if the information inside the parentheses doesnt form a complete sentence, you shouldnt include a period inside the closing bracket.

When the parenthetical element occurs at the end of the sentence, the period should go outside the closing parenthesis to bring the sentence to a close.

Question Marks And Exclamation Points With Parentheses

Place a question mark or exclamation point before a closing parenthesis to punctuate the text inside parentheses. If the punctuation mark is meant to punctuate the surrounding sentence, place it after the closing parenthesis.

Examples

  • We should order food.
  • We should order food .
  • Letâs order food .
  • Letâs get some food.
  • but

Parentheses Exclamation And Question Mark Rule

When an exclamation or question interrupts is offset in parentheses within a complete sentence, always place your end mark before the closing parenthesis. You also must capitalize the first word after the beginning parenthesis because it is considered an entire sentence.

For example:

  • My little league baseball team will attend the Major League playoffs this year.
  • The new house we bought is located at the end of a cul-de-sac with a beautiful lake view.

Formatting The Period Outside Parentheses

Period Before Or After Parentheses Citation

Now that we have seen how punctuation should be inside the parentheses lets look at some cases where they should go outside parentheses.

  • Ive eaten a lot today , so I will probably skip dinner tonight.

In this example, the parenthetical statement is a simple list that cant stand alone as a sentence. In addition, it is found within the middle of a full sentence , so the period should follow the entire statement.

  • Unfortunately, I dont think I can supply silverware , but I can try to bring something else.

In this example, the parenthetical statement is a small dependent clause that cant stand on its own. Also, it acts as an extra note to the main sentence, so the period should go at the end!

  • Please show up to the convention on time .

In this example, the parenthetical statement is a simple time. Again, it acts as a note to specify what is being said in the full statement. Even though it is at the end of the whole sentence, the period should go outside the parentheses.

In Which Cases Is A Comma/period Placed Inside Or Outside Of Parentheses

Are there cases where a period is placed inside parentheses? In which cases the period should be placed inside the parentheses?

The Penguin Handbook says it more clearly than I could:1

  • Examine the material enclosed by parentheses. Is it an entire sentence? If so, place the period inside the closing parenthesis.
  • If the parenthetical material is part of another sentence, place the period outside the closing parenthesis.
  • Sometimes the parenthetical material is part of a longer sentence part that will be set off by a comma, colon, or semicolon. These pieces of punctuation always come after the parenthetical material, never before it or inside the parentheses.
  • From the Guardian style guide:

    parentheses

If the sentence is logically and grammatically complete without the information contained within the parentheses , the punctuation stays outside the brackets.

    • Great answer, so I upvoted it, but one question, can you ALWAYS put a comma inside a parenthesis in AMERICAN STYLE? For example: As long as you’ve watched the first season that shouldn’t be a problem.Feb 7, 2018 at 13:28
    • I don’t think so.

If what is enclosed in the brackets is a complete sentence, it makes sense to put the full stop inside the sentence too. If the bracketed words form part of a sentence that is not itself bracketed, then there is no reason not to put the full stop where it would go anyway, at the end of the sentence .

However IMO, if two full stops should be needed, then only put one outside .

When The Parentheses Are Part Of A Complex

This sentence type is made up of two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.

A comma or pair of commas normally offset a dependent clause. If parentheses follow the dependent clause, a comma will follow the closing parenthesis.

    • The people of the neighborhood, who needed a lot of help , have finally found a way to pay us back!

A helpful way to remember the correct usage is to look at the sentence as a whole. If you removed the parentheses, would there still be a comma? If the answer is yes, you should include a comma after the closing bracket.

    For example:

    • The sun is shining through the clouds , so I think we should go swimming with the neighbors.
    • The sun is shining through the clouds, so I think we should go swimming with the neighbors.

    Exclamation Points And Question Marks

Finally, well look at exclamation points and question marks. Like periods, these are forms of terminal punctuation, so they usually indicate the end of a sentence. However, unlike periods, you can use an exclamation point or a question mark within brackets mid-sentence. For instance:

    The man left a note.

Here, we use a question mark to show the bracketed text is a question.

Its worth noting here that the punctuation inside brackets does not affect the rest of the sentence. And as such, when a sentence ends with bracketed text that includes an exclamation point or a question mark, we still need to add a period after the closing bracket. For example:

    I was not invited .

    I was not invited

Use Parentheses To Add Accessory Information

    English Punctuation: Parentheses

We call parenthetical sentences accessory because we should be able to remove the bracketed clause without obscuring the sentences meaning. For example,

    With parenthetical material:

    • I now have 50 plants , as opposed to the 72 that stood before the windstorm.

    Without parenthetical material:

    • I now have 50 plants as opposed to the 72 that stood before the windstorm.

As shown above, we can remove parenthetical information without eliminating the meaning of a sentence. However, we can also use parentheses to clarify terminology or provide formal, scientific names. For example,

    • The horticulturist is selling the philodendron for $350.
    • People say the Pink Princess are rare, but theyre not.

There are also times when parenthetical sentences occur outside of a complete sentence. For example,

    • I began homeschooling the kids on September 12.

For this particular example, its correct to treat parenthetical material as an independent clause and use a period inside the brackets. However, using parentheses in this manner is somewhat uncommon for formal writing. To write more fluidly, we recommend structuring the sentence as such:

    • I began homeschooling the kids on September 12 .
    • Note: Since the second example now consists of a dependent clause , the period goes after the closing parenthesis to mark the end of the entire sentence.

Examples Of Commas Used After Parenthesis

Here are a few examples of commas used after a closing parenthesis in a sentence:

    • To put it simply , there was no way that he could have won without cheating.
    • We told him to come at six oclock , but he still arrived hours past that.
    • A warm welcome to all , and now I ask you to turn your phones off as we start the show.
    • The mystery of the missing necklace, which had plagued Anns mind , had finally been solved.
    • Although their parents were sure theyd be fine , they still asked that they keep their phone locations turned on.
    • I havent decided if I want to go to the party , but Ill go with you if you want me to.

Reason #: Add Extra Unrelated Commentary

Parentheses allow writers to add related but not totally necessary information to a sentence. As you probably noticed from the first two sentences in the black box above, the parenthetical phrases werent necessary for the sentence to make sense, but they gave additional insight and personality. Heres another sentence with a parenthetical phrase:

    • Rhianna was casually eating cheese and crackers after school when she suddenly realized she was supposed to be at her track meet.

In that sentence, youll see that there is additional related information, but the information isnt necessary for the sentence to make sense. Remove it, and the sentence is just fine.

When The Parentheses Are Part Of The Introductory Statement

An introductory phrase is a clause without a subject and verb. It is typically followed by a comma, which shows that the main idea of the sentence is yet to come.

If a parenthetical element is a part of the introductory phrase, a comma will come after the closing bracket.

    • Around this time of year , Susan liked to go abroad.

Question Marks And Exclamation Points Sometimes Go In Parentheses

    Pin on a writer

If a sentence already has a question mark or exclamation mark, you dont need to add another one inside the parenthetical expression if it contributes to the question or exclamation.

    • Have you seen my cat ?
    • I cant believe I failed that class !

However, if the parenthetical expression has a different tone than the whole sentence, add the appropriate punctuation mark inside even if its just a fragment or a word to show the tone change.

    • My cat is missing so were searching for her.
    • I retook the class last week and passed this time.

If the parenthetical expression ends the sentence, add a period after the parentheses to end the sentence . It looks weird, but its correct.

    • My cat is missing .
    • I retook the class last week .
