Those arent the names of contestants on Americas Next Top Model but rather popular brands of continuous birth control pills.

These pills require taking active pills for 3 months in a row and then taking a week of inactive placebo pills. Aunt Flo might show up for some spotting between months but is only in full flow for 4 weeks out of the year when youre taking the inactive pills.

This can also happen with injectable birth control methods like the Depo shot.

Can Birth Control Help With Cramps

I am 14 and I have the worst cramps ever. Every time I have my period they seem to get more painful and last longer. I have tried aspirin and other painkillers. How do I deal with these cramps? There are times they are so painful I can’t walk. My mom said I could get on birth control, but would that even help for cramps? Tysha*

Lots of girls get cramps at the beginning of their periods. Sometimes, medicine like ibuprofen may help .

Getting regular exercise can also help reduce cramps in some women. Soaking in a warm bath or putting a warm compress on your stomach won’t make cramps disappear, but may help your muscles relax a little.

It may sound strange, but when these methods don’t work, birth control can actually help with cramps and are often prescribed for this reason.

Birth control works because it decreases the amount of prostaglandins chemicals your body produces to make the muscles of the uterus contract. With fewer contractions, there is less pain. Birth control pills also can decrease the amount of blood flow with a girl’s period.

Even if you don’t think you’re interested in birth control pills, if you have severe cramps that keep you home from school or from doing stuff with your friends or that seem to be worsening over time, visit your doctor or nurse practitioner for advice. There are many forms of birth control that are not pills that can also help. Asking a health care provider is a great way to find out what’s going on and the best way to handle it.

When To See A Doctor

Most cases of cramps can be dealt with either using home remedies or over the counter medicine. However, some cases may warrant a visit to the doctor such as:

  • Severe cramps lasting more than 4 or 5 days but no period
  • When you have nausea and vomiting
  • When you have a fever
  • When you miss your periods for two times in a row

Generally, if you feel anything you have never felt before, make sure you pay your doctor a visit.

How Birth Control Pills Work

Most birth control pills are combination pills. This means that they contain synthetic forms of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone.

These hormones help stop pregnancy by preventing ovulation, the development and release of an egg from your ovaries. The hormones also thicken your cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to reach an egg. The lining of the uterus is also altered to prevent implantation.

The minipill only contains progestin, a synthetic form of progesterone. It also stops ovulation, alters the cervical mucus, and changes the uterine lining.

Taking your pills properly not only helps prevent pregnancy but can also help keep cramps at bay. If you miss pills or take them late, hormone levels may change and trigger breakthrough bleeding and mild cramping.

Could I Be Pregnant

How to Get Rid of Period Cramps Naturally

When you experience period pains but have no period, you could indeed be pregnant.

If you are expecting your period and the pains come about around a week before the period, then it could be implantation cramps rather than the period.

You may confuse implantation cramps with a period but you need to know that implantation cramps are less intense.

While you can use the length of the pains to also differentiate between a period and implantation, it is never a sure way to do it.

This is because implantation cramps can take anything from a few hours to a week before they subside.

If instead of a period you see a light pink or light brown discharge, then you should be sure of being pregnant. That is unless you are harboring a disease.

Cramps are usually the last sign that your period is coming, though, and happen 1-2 days before the blood appears. It could also be caused by bloating, a common symptom around the time a period is due. Pain caused by bloating isnât usually as low down in the abdomen as period cramps.

If youâre having them mid-cycle they could be down to trapped wind.

If you regularly experience mid-cycle cramps, keep a symptoms diary and speak to your doctor.

Tender Or Sore Breasts

If you boobs are sensitive to even the softest touch, then you may have a bun in the oven. Sore breasts can appear as early as two weeks after conception. As soon as the egg is implanted, your body starts making HCG the pregnancy hormone needed to support a pregnancy. The rapid increase of this hormone leads to breast tenderness or fullness.

Some women might mistake this for regular breast pain before a period, but in early pregnancy, your breasts will feel 100 times more sensitive.

Physical Or Psychological Stress

Though some stress can help you challenge yourself, too much can have a negative impact on your health. While we dont know much about the relationship between stress and periods, we do know the hypothalamus controls the pituitary gland, which controls the thyroid, adrenal glands, and ovaries. All of these factors work together to manage the hormones that affect your menstrual cycleestrogen, progesterone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and luteinizing hormone.

Stress can throw your hormone levels off and, as a result, leave you with period symptoms but no period. If youre feeling stressed, take some time to learn coping mechanisms, rest, and reset your body and mind.

Other possible signs of stress: Fatigue, change in libido, upset stomach, insomnia.

Are There Other Reasons Im Cramping Without A Period

GIRL TALK: (Birth Control, Cramps, longer periods and gaining weight)

Thanks to the fairly central location of our reproductive organs, its pretty easy to mix up other cramp-causing conditions with your period. For example, a fairly serious cause of abdominal pain is appendicitis. You can check for this by pressing on the right side of your body, between navel and side, and then letting go. What youre looking for is more pain in the release than the press. That rebound tenderness and fever are two sure signs its time to get to the hospital ASAP!

With an urgent issue like appendicitis ruled out, several other things might be the culprit. It could be that certain penetrative sex positions have irritated your cervix, or that you have a urinary tract infection . Or, its a digestive issue like lactose intolerance, gluten sensitivity, an ulcer, or IBS.

This wide range of causes means that seeking medical attention if the issue persists is a pretty good idea. If you miss more than three periods, definitely seek medical care.

And as medical self-advocacy best practices suggest, you can bring a list of things youve ruled out or things you think it might be along with you. You might not know what is or is not significant, and a good doctor will understand that. Its better if you tell them everything than leave something out!

What Does It Mean If I Have Cramps A Week After My Period

There are several reasons you might experience unusual cramping a week or so after your period. Cramps that last after your period has ended or pain that occurs throughout your cycle may be linked to a condition like endometriosis or fibroids.

More rarely, cramps that suddenly appear after your period could be linked to ovulation or the implantation of a fertilized egg in the wall of your uterus.

When To See A Healthcare Provider

Talk to your healthcare provider if you experience spotting during the first few months of taking a new type of birth control pill.

Also, speak up if you experience bleeding that is heavy or persistent or spotting that worsens several months after starting the pills.

The dosage could be too high, and a simple adjustment could fix the problem. Or there may be a co-occurring condition causing the abnormal bleeding.

There could be another explanation, too: pregnancy. If youve missed a pill or taken one later than usual, theres a risk you are pregnant. The blood could be a sign of implantation.

A thorough evaluation by a healthcare provider should reveal the cause of the bleeding.

Is Prolonged Bleeding Normal After Starting Birth Control

Q: Is it natural to have prolonged periods after just starting birth control? I started taking the pill when I started my period and it still persists.

A: Irregular bleeding is the most common side effect of birth control pills. It is especially common during the first three months as your body adjusts to the hormones in the medication. However, other things can cause prolonged bleeding too. If the bleeding is especially heavy , persists throughout the whole month or occurs only with intercourse especially if youve stopped using condoms you should see your womens health care provider to make sure nothing more serious is going on.

The most common cause of irregular bleeding is missed pills, so make sure you are taking the pill every day, and at the same time every day.

Birth control pills can cause a lot of other side effects, especially bloating, nausea and breast tenderness. Most side effects resolve after a few months, but the clinicians in our Womens Services Department usually recommend that you check in with your health care provider after your first 3 months on the pill to make sure everything is going OK. If you have any questions or concerns about birth control, theyre happy to answer them for you.

Can You Still Treat Period Pain If You Arent Having Your Period

You should get the problem diagnosed first before you begin treating your symptoms you should get a diagnosis from your doctor to make sure it is period pain. For example, conditions such as untreated STIs can lead to infertility or further health complications, and though you can take painkillers to help with the pain this would also need antibiotic treatment. Another condition which needs emergency medical attention is an ectopic pregnancy. This is where a fertilised egg implants itself outside of the womb such as in the fallopian tubes. If this occurs, it is not possible for the pregnancy to survive and it will need to be removed by medicine or surgery. The symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy include:

  • Symptoms of pregnancy, i.e. a missed period
  • Diarrhoea or vomiting

If you are worried that you might have an ectopic pregnancy you must see a doctor urgently.

Once you know the problem, then you can try to treat it if you have been diagnosed with period pain there are treatment methods available to help relieve the symptoms:

  • Painkillers ibuprofen or mefenamic acid can help to manage period pain. These have been shown to be more effective at managing the pain than paracetamol, although some women prefer the latter or cannot take NSAIDs. Your doctor can prescribe stronger painkillers if you find these are not effective at managing your symptoms. Usually, naproxen or codeine are sufficient for period pain.
