The Basics Of Birth Control Pills

When you swallow birth control pills, youre ingesting one or more synthetic hormones. This could be a combination of estrogen and progestin, or just progestin, depending on the type of birth control that youre taking. These hormones work to prevent pregnancy in three different ways.

First, they work to prevent your ovaries from ovulating, or releasing an egg each month.

They also thicken the cervical mucus, which makes it harder for sperm to reach an egg if one is released. The hormones can thin the uterine lining, too. This means that if an egg does get fertilized, itll be difficult for it to attach to the uterine lining and develop.

Birth control pills are over 99 percent effective when used correctly. This means taking the pill at the same time every day. If you miss a day or youre late taking your pill, the efficacy can decrease. With typical use, the failure rate is about

Several different types of birth control pills are available.

Some are similar to the pill packs that were first made available in 1960. They included 21 days of pills with active hormones and seven placebo or inactive pills. When you take an inactive pill, it allows for bleeding that mimics normal menstruation.

There are also packs that allow for 24 days of active pills and a shorter menstrual-like bleeding period.

Extended-cycle or continuous regimens consist of a couple of months worth of active pills. They can either reduce the number of periods you have or eliminate your period entirely.

Periods like this may be dysmenorrheaa fancy medical term for pain with menstruation. There are several possible causes of severe period pain, some of which have special treatment options.

• The cells from the lining of the uterus may be growing into the muscles of the uterus or on other organs in the body .

• The muscle of the uterus may be growing fibroids.

• The uterus may be releasing too much of a substance called prostaglandins, causing its muscles to contract irregularly and leading to big-time pain.

The good news is that you dont have to put up with this pain! If youre having abnormally bad periods, talk to your health care provider about what might be causing the pain and how to treat it. There are a few things you can do to make your periods less painful, shorter, or go away altogether.

What Will The Implant Do To My Periods

Although it doesnt happen in all cases, Nexplanon is known to change the bleeding pattern of users, so this is something to keep in mind if you choose to try it out. Studies have found most users experience a reduction in the frequency and volume of bleeding, but some , experience unpredictable, frequent, and/or prolonged bleeding which – lets face it – can be frustrating! In fact, studies show 1 in 10 people stop using the implant due to this unfavourable change in their periods.

Breakthrough bleeding is a common concern among women using hormonal birth control. Its usually a small amount of spotting at a time when youre not expecting your period, though some women have heavier bleeding. Most often, my patients come in saying they feel fine, but are noticing a little spotting when they use the bathroom. Should they be worried?

I reassure them that breakthrough bleeding rarely signals a health problem. And it doesnt mean your birth control isnt effective at preventing pregnancy. But there are ways we can try to fix it.

Why You Cant Have A Period While Pregnant

An actual period happens when the uterine lining sheds at the end of a menstrual cycle. When an egg goes unfertilized, levels of the hormones that control the eggs release drop and cause your uterine lining, which has thickened in the first half of your cycle as it awaited a fertilized egg, to slough off and shed as what we refer to as a period.

If youre pregnant, an egg has been fertilized and implanted in the wall of the uterus. Pregnancy hormones tell your body to maintain the uterine lining, and since its not shedding, you no longer have a period. A missed period is why one of the earliest signs of pregnancy .

Sex During Your Period

The chances are pretty good that you will not get pregnant if you have sex during your period. Menstruation is the signal that the ovum was not fertilized or implanted, leading to a drop in hormone levels and the shedding of the uterine lining. Even if a sperm made it to an egg, which is very unlikely, the uterine lining would not be ready for implantation. So, during this stage in your cycle, your risk of pregnancy remains negligible.

However, the odds of conception during your period arent zero. If you have a very short cycle, ovulation may occur soon after your period. Given that sperm can live inside you for up to three days, having sex at the end of your period may lead to fertilization in the days following it. One study charting the most common conception days in the menstrual cycle shows that odds start to rise on day 7 LMPjust a week past your first day of bleeding.

Its also important to note that what you may think is a period might not be. An estimated 2.8% of people with periods have spotting around ovulation, which is actually when you are most fertile. In other cases, spotting may be implantation bleeding, a very early sign of pregnancy. Unlike a regular period, spotting in these circumstances is typically lighter in color and flow.

Combination Birth Control Pills

If a combination birth control pill is started for the first time on the Sunday after your period begins, your period should occur about 25 days later. Ask your healthcare provider which day is the best to start your specific pill pack. If your period begins on a Sunday, you can start the pill pack on that Sunday.

• In general, about 3 days after finishing all of the 21 active tablets in a 28 pill pack, most women will start their period.
• If you use a 28-pill pack, youâll get your period during the week you take the reminder pills.
• If you use a 21-day pill pack, youâll still get your period the week you do not take any pills. Remember that the 21-day pack has no reminder pills. Use a reminder to help you stay on track.

Why Cant You Technically Have A Period When Youre Pregnant

Throughout the month, your body prepares for pregnancy. It does this by building up the endometrium, or uterine lining. If you become pregnant, this lining serves to help nourish the fertilized egg at the very early stages of pregnancy. If you dont become pregnant, your body sheds the endometrium, via your period. The Period You Get While On The Pill Isnt A ‘true’ Period

Sure, you bleed during the week that you take the sugar pills. But technically thatâs âmonthly withdrawal bleeding.â Itâs slightly different than a regular period.

Normally, you ovulate in the middle of your menstrual cycle. If the egg your ovaries release isnât fertilized, your hormone levels drop, causing you to shed the lining inside your uterus, and you get your period.

Birth control pills, though, prevent ovulation. With most types, you take hormones for 3 weeks followed by 1 week of pills without them. Though they keep your body from releasing an egg, they usually donât prevent it from building up the lining of your uterus all month. The period-like bleeding during that fourth week is your bodyâs reaction to the lack of hormones from the last week of the pill.

Fibroid Pregnancy: Is It High Risk

Among the complications of pregnancy among women with fibroids are placenta previa, fetal malpresentation, premature rupture of membranes, placental abruption, severe postpartum hemorrhage, or cesarean delivery.

Your obstetrician might watch you closely and order additional sonograms or ultrasounds to check on the size of the fibroids and to make sure a fibroid is not in the way of the birth canal. Fibroids can grow larger during the first trimester of pregnancy.

It is common for patients with fibroids to have healthy pregnancies. However, fibroids can affect pregnancy outcomes depending on their size, location, and number. It is possible for patients with fibroids to have a premature delivery or to require a cesarean section. Additionally, fibroids have also been linked to miscarriage.

Taking more than the prescribed number of pills in one day is not going to stop your period right away. Depending on how many you take, it may cause you to feel sick, but its not going to magically make your period disappear.

In fact, Dr. Dweck says there are instances in which taking two pills in one day is recommended to catch up for a missed pill. But whether or not it will eventually stop your period depends on your individual circumstances. I got the Nexplanon implant in 2015 and had it removed around nine or ten months later.The birth control pills I was taking triggered migraines, and the birth control shot had a lot of unpleasant side effects. Also, I loved the idea of not having a period each month.

The insertion process was simple, and I didnât find it painful. Unfortunately, I experienced several unpleasant side effects. I would bleed for about three weeks of every month, I gained quite a bit of weight, and had extreme mood swings.

I had the implant removed because of all of the negative side effects I was experiencing. The removal process was more tricky in my case than the insertion. It had migrated, and my doctor had difficulty removing the implant.

The implant did not work for me, but I have friends who have the same implant and they love it. If youâre interested, go ahead and try it. But listen to your body.
