Had My Period But Im Pregnant

Hi ladies. If you know me in real life please dont say anything! This is a huge secret right now. I had a normal period last week but then spotted to days this week which prompted me to take a pregnancy test and it was positive immediately! My husband and I are in shock because we were debating between two and three kids but its been decided for us now hahah. We have a son who will be 4 in January and a 6 month old son. I didnt notice my symptoms because Im up all night feeding a baby anyway so Im always tired, wrote off the headache and attributed nausea to maybe getting the stomach bug our oldest had earlier this week. Im wondering if anyone had had a full blown period and gone on to have a healthy normal pregnancy? I never had more than spotting with my other two boys. Im getting hcg levels drawn today when I hear back from my midwife but wanted some input from other real life experiences. Also, this is scary because I had 4 miscarriages between our two current boys so Im worried. Thanks in advance ladies!

An actual period happens when the uterine lining sheds at the end of a menstrual cycle. When an egg goes unfertilized, levels of the hormones that control the egg’s release drop and cause your uterine lining, which has thickened in the first half of your cycle as it awaited a fertilized egg, to slough off and shed as what we refer to as a period.

If you’re pregnant, an egg has been fertilized and implanted in the wall of the uterus. Pregnancy hormones tell your body to maintain the uterine lining, and since it’s not shedding, you no longer have a period. A missed period is why one of the earliest signs of pregnancy .

Why You May Bleed During Pregnancy

First Half of PregnancySpotting during this time is common, especially after sex, a pelvic exam, or a transvaginal ultrasound. In these cases, the blood might be coming from the cervix. It becomes tender during pregnancy and could be a bit inflamed or irritated. This type of bleeding can also occur prior to a miscarriage or with an ectopic pregnancy, but most often it is not a cause for concern.

Heavier bleeding during the first trimester can also be a sign of a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. This bleeding doesnt mean a miscarriage will occur, or that you have an ectopic pregnancy. About half of pregnant women who have bleeding do not miscarry. The most important thing you can do is to let you doctor know about any bleeding, so that you can evaluated for the cause.

Second Half of PregnancyDuring the late second and entire third trimester, causes of bleeding can include:

Bleeding From The Placenta

A vaginal bleed without pain might be caused by an abnormally placed placenta. Its quite common to have a low-lying placenta in early pregnancy.

Usually, by the third trimester, the placenta will have moved up as the uterus grows and is further away from the cervix. Sometimes, though, this doesnt happen.

Here are three different placental problems that can result in a vaginal bleed:

Placenta previa

Placenta previa will usually result in a vaginal bleed at some point in your pregnancy usually after the 20-week mark.

There are different degrees of severity, but all cases of placenta previa require repeat ultrasounds for an accurate diagnosis.

If you have a placenta previa, to prevent risk to your baby, your doctor might recommend bed rest, induction, or c-section if the placenta remains over or too close to the cervix.

This article about placenta previa has more information.

Placental abruption

Another cause of vaginal bleeding later in pregnancies is placental abruption. This is where the placenta partially or completely separates from the wall of the uterus.

Symptoms include severe pain and bleeding.

The blood might be visible or remain in the uterus, which will be tense, tight, hard to the touch and very painful.

Contact your doctor or health care professional if you have any of these symptoms and go immediately to your nearest emergency department.

Depending on the severity of the bleeding, you might be recommended bed rest, an induction, or even a c-section.

What Are The Causes Of Abdominal And Back Pain

Some of the aches and pains experienced during pregnancy are thought to be due to hormonal changes. Large amounts of the hormone progesterone are produced, which are needed to sustain pregnancy. In addition to this, progesterone acts on the muscles, ligaments and joints causing them to become slacker and more flexible. This hormonal effect is thought to be responsible for some of the stitch like pains that some women experience in the lower part of the tummy and in some cases this can be quite severe. The same hormones can be responsible for constipation during pregnancy this can also cause abdominal pain.

The enlarging womb is made up of layers of muscles and is held in place in the pelvis by supporting ligaments. As the womb expands to accommodate the developing baby, it can pull on the ligaments and muscles, to cause these growing pains.

The backache that some women get in early pregnancy is also thought to be due to a hormonal effect, and the supporting muscles are softer.

Abdominal and/or backache can also be a sign of a urine infection. This may also cause burning or stinging when passing urine and the need to pass urine more frequently. You must inform your doctor of these symptoms, so that a urine test can be obtained and treatment given if needed.

  • Molar Pregnancy
  • Early Signs of a Miscarriage

Spotting, Implantation Bleeding and Ectopic Pregnancy are the three that we get asked about the most, so weve got more info on those below. It should be noted that Implantation Bleeding and Ectopic Pregnancy bleeding are generally uncommon.
