At your visit, you may also get an HPV test, short for Human papillomavirus. This test, like the Pap smear test, can also be performed during your menses. The HPV test does not detect cancer, rather it is used to determine if there is the presence of the Human papillomavirus, which may lead to cancer, according to The British Journal of Cancer please see www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov for more information.

It is important to remember that these tests are essential in the early detection and possible prevention of serious health concerns in the future.

Our doctors understand that your appointment may be scheduled months in advance, so you may end up at our office while you are on your menstrual cycle. According to the American College of Gynecology, at www.ACOG.org, it is a good idea to keep your appointment and go ahead with the test, rather than miss your test because of your period.

Its not every day that four related OBGYNS visit the show — so, needless to say, our studio audience jumped at the chance to pick the brains of Dr. Joanna Bedell, Dr. Sara Bedell and Dr. Vicky Bedell, and their mom, Dr. Janet Gersten.

As suspected, making an annual appointment for when youre on your period isnt ideal — and for a couple of reasons.

“The best time to actually schedule an appointment would be mid-cycle, which is usually one to two weeks after your period has started,” advises Dr. Vicky Bedell.

And there are essentially two reasons for that.

The first one is that your breasts aren’t as swollen or tender then, making exams and mammograms a little easier for your providers .

Hey, any tip that makes these visits more comfortable is a tip we want to hear!

Secondly, that excessive bleeding can actually interfere with a Pap smear result, so light bleeding or no bleeding is ideal.

Naturally, a girl should see us at any age if she has medical issues or questions. But even if there are no concerns, 13 to 15 is when a girls body is changing and she starts exploring her sexuality.

This initial appointment is meant to educate patients and to establish a relationship with them. We discuss menstrual issues, puberty and prevention of pregnancy and STIs . I have found that, at times, girls are more open with their physician than they are with a parent. In those cases, I encourage girls to try talking to their parents, too.

As a gynecologist, I am comfortable prescribing different methods of birth control, including contraceptive pills, patches, vaginal rings, IUDs and subdermal implants. I prefer the term hormonal regulation, since these can help menstrual irregularities, in addition to preventing unintended pregnancies.

My colleagues and I call ourselves the HPV vaccine police. We are making efforts to ensure our patients receive the vaccine, which is approved for girls and boys ages 11 through 26. This often works! We also screen for STIs, including chlamydia and gonorrhea.

Additionally, we discuss general physical health, including BMI and involvement in sports, and emotional and social health. I ask what they do after school and about their interests. Your Menstrual Cycle Has Changed

How to be more confident talking about sexual health with your gyno ...

If your old reliable cycle has started to shift by a couple of days you may worry that something is wrong, but period changes are more common than you’d think. “I have patients coming in all of the time saying, ‘I have always had a five-day period and now I have a three-day or a seven-day period,'”Leah Millheiser, director of the female sexual medicine program at Stanford University Medical Center, M.D., tells SELF. But what’s “normal” for your period can change over time.

Anything from stress to weight fluctuations to hormonal changes can trigger this. However if your period becomes really irregular or you’re skipping periods, get checked out by your gyno to rule out a possible health problem, such as PCOS.

Can You Get A Pap Smear On Your Period

Now that you know what happens at a gynecology appointment, we would like to answer some common questions about testing. Can you get a Pap smear at an OBGYN appointment during your period? Yes, you can. It is ideal, however, to schedule your Pap smear test, short for Papanicolaou test, about 5 days after your period, according to the American Society of Clinical Oncology. You can read more about this at www.ASCO.org.

Is it ok to go to the gynecologist while having your period and still get a Pap smear? Yes because it can detect precancerous or even cancerous changes in the cells of the cervix, it is important to not miss a Pap smear. Your doctor will normally wipe away the blood or any vaginal discharge before taking the sample. This process will help enable the lab to detect any cell abnormalities in the sample.

Can you get a Pap smear on your period and it still be accurate? A Pap smear test can still be performed even if you are having your period and the accuracy of the test is rarely affected with light or normal bleeding, according to studies done by The British Journal of Cancer please see www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov for further research on this topic.

If your pap smear interpretation is inconclusive, you may need to reschedule a second Pap smear test. Make sure and reach out to us with any questions you have about getting a Pap smear, especially if your period is heavy.

Its Ok If You Want To Reschedule

Ultimately, your comfort is whats most important here! So, if for whatever reason you want to reschedule for a time you wont be menstruating, do that.

Theres one big caveat to this: You shouldnt reschedule if the reason youre going to the gynecologist is because your period is heavier than usual.

If something unusual is going on with your cycle, its important not to delay care, says Gersh.

To reiterate: Theres *no* medical reason to reschedule.

Being on your menstrual cycle isnt going to have an effect on your visit or results.

Thanks to new tech, the findings of your Pap smear, STI tests, and pelvic exam will most likely be the same as they would if you werent bleeding!

Your Period Doesnt Stop And Start

Dr. Nguyen tells HG that a lot of women think their period stops in water and then picks up again. But thats not the case. Your period does not stop when you are in the water. The pressure from the water may slow the flow, but your period will continue when you get out of the water, she says. So if you want to protect your new bikini, dont assume you wont bleed while taking a swim or that a leak is impossible.

While it may be possible to have inconclusive pap results while youre on your period, its also very likely that they would come out without any issues.

The reality is that we often schedule these appointments weeks in advance. Unless your period arrives every month like clockwork, its hard to figure out whether youre going to be on your period that far ahead.

About 30% of women have irregular periods, and all of them need to get regular pap tests. It would make no sense to have almost a third of the female population put off going to their gynecologist because they are experiencing one of the very things OB-GYN are experts about.

Starting Menopause: Ages 45 To 54

The average age of menopause is 50 to 52. At this stage in life, many women are having irregular or heavy periods. Their hormones may be fluctuating, leading to typical menopause symptoms, such as night sweats, mood swings, and hot flashes.

Well talk through all those issues at your annual visit and determine next steps. There are many options to treat these symptoms, including:

  • Lifestyle changes
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Alternative, complementary approaches, such as meditation and acupuncture

This is also the age when most women should be having regular screenings for a number of other potential issues. Tests like mammograms, bone density screenings and colonoscopies can help women keep a clean bill of health as they get older.

The 2015 American Cancer Society guidelines suggest that women start getting annual mammograms at age 45 instead of age 40. This change is controversial among doctors and patients, so talk with your doctor to determine what youre comfortable with and at what age you should start getting mammograms. The American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommends that women start mammograms at age 40.

The other issue at this age is bone health. While a woman is still having her period and producing hormones, estrogen protects the bones. Once a woman stops having her period, the ovaries decrease the amount of estrogen being produced and there is some bone loss, which can lead to osteoporosis, which can put you at risk of fracture.

Does The Gyno Care If You Shave

Getting The Most From Your Gyno Visits

Menstrual Cup Medium Size

More than half of all women consider their gynecologists to be their primary care providers and rely on them as their main sources of care.* That means for the majority of women, an annual gyno visit might very well be the only contact they have with a physician all year.

Considering its importance, women should take every opportunity to make the most of their appointments. Here are five tips that can help you prepare for your next visit and maximize the experience to the benefit of your good health.

To go with the flow or not to go with the flow. That is the question your health practitioner must answer. Your annual exam may be scheduled months in advance but as the date looms near, so can your period.

Most doctors agree that the best time to undergo an exam is mid-cycle, a week or two after your period. Your breasts aren’t as swollen then, making exams and mammograms a little easier for your providers .

Moreover, the absence of blood makes it easier for a Pap smear to detect the possibilities of cancer, precancerous cells, infections or sexually transmitted diseases. If you’re seeing a doctor because of a vaginal discharge problem, the presence of blood can also interfere with tests.

On the other hand, if your problem is irregular or heavy bleeding, your doctor may prefer to see you while you’re on your period.

When it’s time for your appointment and that time of the month hits, call your doctor’s office to determine the best course of action.
