Can You Get Pregnant Without Ever Having A Period

Irregular Periods And Ovulation

I Had Unprotected Sex And I Didn’t Get Pregnant. Why?

Its possible to ovulate without later bleeding like a period. This often occurs because of previous uterine scarring or certain hormonal medications.

Its also possible to have menstrual-like bleeding without ovulation. This generally happens when the uterine lining becomes so thick it becomes unstable and naturally sloughs off.

The uterine lining can become thick without ovulation if the hormone estrogen, which is produced prior to ovulation, continues to be secreted unopposed by the other female hormone, progesterone, which is produced after ovulation.

There are many possible causes for irregular menstruation, and many of the causes can affect ovulation or make getting pregnant more difficult. In some cases, the cause of irregular menstruation is unknown.

Some causes that may affect ovulation and your ability to carry a pregnancy include:

Who Does Anovulation Affect

Anovulation can affect anyone who has ovaries and is of child-bearing age, which, on average, is between the ages of 12 and 51. If any of the following conditions or situations apply to you, youre more likely to experience anovulation:

  • You have just started getting periods .
  • You are in perimenopause .
  • You have a very low body mass index , which is usually either from having anorexia or from doing long-term excessive exercise.

Our Midwife Melissa Says:

Yes, it is possible to get pregnant without having a period. This is because we ovulate two weeks before we menstruate. When we ovulate, we are fertile, and it is at this time that we can fall pregnant.

We are only fertile for about 12-24 hours, and after this time, the egg dies if it is not fertilised. However, sperm can survive for up to 5 days. Hence, even if intercourse occurred say three or four days before ovulation, it would be possible to become pregnant.

If you are having your first period after having your baby, you will ovulate before you have your first period, and you can get pregnant from this first ovulation, even though you have not yet had a period.

There are some easily recognisable signs that can tell you that ovulation is about to occur. If you are wanting to avoid or achieve a pregnancy, you could be observant for these signs and use this knowledge to achieve or avoid pregnancy. This is called the Billings Ovulation Method.

Can you get pregnant if you have sex while you are in your period?

Yes its possible to get pregnant if you have unprotected sex during your period. However, its less common for this to happen.

Heres the deal: A woman is most likely to get pregnant from sex that happens just before and during ovulation . Ovulation happens in the middle of the time you get periods, usually about 14 days before your period starts. Its more likely that you could become pregnant from sex during your period if you have a shorter menstrual cycle.

All of this might sound really complicated, especially if you arent sure how long your menstrual cycle is, or when youre ovulating. During the first few years that you have a period, its pretty typical for your menstrual cycle to be irregular which makes this stuff even harder to keep track of. But if you use a birth control method like condoms or the pill every time you have sex, your chances of getting pregnant are really really low, whether youre on your period or not.

I Got Pregnant Without A Period After Baby Number 1

Several months ago, led by the sudden belief that I was unexpectedly pregnant, I headed to my laptop and began to type in “pregnant w.” The search results I was specifically seeking popped up first: “pregnant without a period,” immediately followed by “pregnant wedding dress.” Clearly, I was not the only woman looking for information on experiencing something outside the generally assumed order of operations. In theory, I knew I could get pregnant postpartum without having a period, but 14 months in, I just didn’t really expect it. I was still managing a baby! Surely no other babies would have the audacity to arrive unannounced. A quick cut to the plot twist: my uterus was gosh darn full of audacity I was pregnant, and I had never had a period postpartum.

I had exclusively breastfed my daughter, Melby, since birth, never seeing any signs of a period returning. Several of my girlfriends with similarly aged babies had started their periods again even though they were also breastfeeding, which is simply to say, clearly there is no exact science to the postpartum experience especially with so many varied elements at play.

When I tracked back and did the math, I realized I had gotten pregnant basically within days of ending breastfeeding.

A month later, I found out I was pregnant.

I like to think this little person was just eager to join us, and so, we are equally eager to meet them.

And just as I am now, I know that that love will, too.

What Should You Do If You Think You Might Be Pregnant

If your period is late or youre having other early pregnancy symptoms, its a good idea to take a home pregnancy test.

Signs of pregnancy include things like swollen or sore breasts, frequent urination, nausea with or without vomiting, and tiredness. You may also experience less common or even strange symptoms, such as constipation, a metallic taste in your mouth, or dizziness.

There are several different types of pregnancy tests, including home kits that test urine for the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin . You can pick one up at most pharmacies or grocery stores or even online.

Home tests range in sensitivity, so a negative result doesnt always mean you arent pregnant. If you get a negative result and still suspect you might be pregnant, consider taking another home test in a few days.

As a general rule of thumb, you may want to wait until after your missed period to test. By that time, theres usually enough hCG in your system to be detected by most tests. However, some tests may give you a positive result as early as 4 or 5 days before your expected period.

Still not sure? Try making an appointment with your primary care provider. They can test your urine in the office setting for hCG. Beyond that, your doctor may also give you a blood test that can tell you the exact level of hCG circulating in your body .

Risk Of Pregnancy In Menopause

Can I get pregnant if I have sex during my period?

Suppose a woman is in menopause and undergoes assisted fertilization treatment. In that case, she can conceive a pregnancy, and while there is much less chance that the fetus will have some genetic alteration, there may be some risks during pregnancy. When the woman is previously studied, these risks can go down, ruling out possible diseases or conditions that could generate a risky pregnancy. On the other hand, assisted fertilization involves periodic controls and monitoring of the pregnancy necessary to resolve possible complications.

Among these complications in the pregnancy of older women are:

  • Preterm delivery: delivery occurs earlier than expected, which carries risks for the baby, as it may require special care and assistance.
  • Postpartum complications: increased bleeding, infections, and postpartum depression are some of the possibilities.
  • Problems with the placenta.
  • Gestational diabetes is a malfunction of the pancreas during pregnancy, which causes glucose levels to rise above the ordinary. It involves certain precautions, rigorous monitoring, and a special diet.
  • Arterial hypertension: it is the increase in pressure above standard limits. It can bring complications to the liver, kidneys, and nervous system levels.
  • Kidney problems can be overloaded and not work correctly or become infected more easily.
  • Depression and psychological disorders are more likely in older pregnancies.

When Does Ovulation Happen

Ovulation usually happens about 10 to 16 days before the start of your next period, so it helps to know your cycle length before you start trying to get pregnant.

You may have not known when you ovulate within your cycle, and if you have been using a hormone contraceptive such as the Pill, you wont have had a natural menstrual cycle for a while, because the Pill prevents ovulation from happening.

As a first step, mark on your diary the dates that you bleed during a period. You can then count how many days from the first day of your period to your next period to work out the length of your cycle.

Fertility Tracking For Women With Pcos And Irregular Periods

If women are not ovulating or ovulating irregularly, as in the case of polycystic ovary syndrome , they may experience irregular bleeding. Women with PCOS have bleeding that occurs randomly, not in response to a true cycle. As a result, women with PCOS cannot use their period to track their cycle. They would be better suited to discuss alternative methods of tracking fertility with their health care provider.

Similarly, women who experience irregular periods should not count on using their period to track their fertility. An average period cycle lasts 21 to 35 days from the start of one period to the start of the next period. If your periods fall out of this timeframe, then they may be irregular and not associated with ovulation.

Women may experience irregular periods for a variety of reasons like being underweight or constant and intense exercise, Harper said. However, irregular periods may be an indicator of an underlying health issue like PCOS. Speak with your provider if you believe you have an irregular menstrual cycle.

Ovulation Without A Period

Again, since your period results from ovulation, it is uncommon to ovulate without having a period, but not impossible. Factors such as uterine scarring or becoming pregnant can cause your period not to occur.

If you have had a dilation and curettage procedure, a C-section or reproductive disease, you may have scarring on your uterus. If so, the usual thickening of the uterus lining that normally happens after ovulation does not occur. You may ovulate without having a period, or you might have a light period.

You also may ovulate without periods if your ovaries release an egg between 12 to 16 days before you expect your period to begin.

Yes, women can get pregnant with an irregular period. However, the ability to get pregnant decreases significantly. The disadvantage is ovulation becomes difficult to determine. The pregnancy success rate of a healthy woman with a regular cycle is 30%. Studies show this decreases exponentially if periods are off by ten days or more.

Consult A Health Care Provider

Lifestyle changes can sometimes help improve the chances of conceiving, but they cant replace medical treatment for underlying conditions. A health care provider can determine the cause of irregular cycles that may be making conception difficult.

A health care provider will probably perform a physical examination and ultrasound, and may order laboratory tests to measure hormonal levels. This will give them the necessary information to diagnose any health conditions that might be causing irregular cycles.

Theyll also ask about menstruation and look for symptoms of anovulatory cycles .

Once they have determined a diagnosis, a health care provider may be able to prescribe treatment. They may also be able to advise on how to get pregnant fast with irregular periods naturally or make a referral for a fertility specialist.

Can You Get Pregnant Right After Your Period

Yes. Immediately after your period is still not the ideal time to get pregnant, but you are more likely to conceive at this time than during your period. That’s because you’re closer to the time when you will ovulate.

Again, two factors can increase your chances of getting pregnant right after your period:

  • A short menstrual cycle
  • The shorter your cycle and the longer your period, the more likely it is that you’ll be fertile during the last few days of your period or in the days just afterward.

Instead, they all stayed small and thats why my ovary was full of cysts.
