How Accurate Is A Baby Due Date Calculator

A due date calculator is only an estimate. Your healthcare provider will examine you and your developing fetus to confirm your due date.

To get a more accurate idea of when your baby will be born, your provider will perform an ultrasound. During an ultrasound, your provider measures your baby. These measurements help your provider determine your babys gestational age and confirm your due date.

Your baby is a tiny ball of several hundred cells that are rapidly multiplying and burrowing into the lining of your uterus. The cells that become the placenta are producing hCG, the pregnancy hormone. It tells your ovaries to stop releasing eggs and keep producing progesterone. Once there’s enough hCG in your urine, you’ll get a positive pregnancy test result.

Why Is It Important To Calculate My Due Date

Its important to know your due date for planning purposes knowing your expected delivery date helps you prepare to welcome your baby. Youll have time to pack for the hospital and get the things you need for the baby, like a car seat. If you have other children, counting down the days until the new baby arrives can help siblings prepare for a new family member.

Knowing when youre due also allows you to get appropriate prenatal care. This includes taking prenatal vitamins and getting prenatal screenings at the right times during your pregnancy. Your provider will also measure your babys size and position throughout your pregnancy to ensure that your baby is growing properly.

How Is My Due Date Calculated

Pregnancy Due Date Calculator (FIND YOUR DUE DATE)

There are several ways your due date is determined. If you happen to know the day you conceived, you can count 38 weeks from that day to find your due date.

But very few expectant moms know exactly when they conceived. Even if you only had sex once during your fertile period, you wouldn’t conceive on that day unless you happen to be ovulating. Sperm can live for up to five days inside your fallopian tubes. So, it could be up to five days after you have sex that you release an egg and it gets fertilized by a waiting sperm. That’s the day you conceive.

So, without knowing the day of conception, how does anyone determine a due date?

How To Calculate Due Date For Twins

If you naturally conceived twins or multiples and havent already been told your pregnancy due date by your doctor, you can use The Bump due date calculator above based on your LMP, just as you would if you werent doubling down on babies. How to calculate due date for multiples is the same method youd use for a singleton baby, but keep in mind that delivery day recommendations may change: For example, di/di twins are usually delivered between 38 weeks and 38 weeks and six days instead of 40 weeks. So just know that twins may arrive earlier than the due date noted by the pregnancy calculator. A first-trimester ultrasound is the most accurate way to calculate due date, and changes to the date after that measurement is done are extremely rare.

Now that you know what month baby will be born in, you can also get the scoop on if your wee one will supposedly be a boy or a girl. Use the Chinese Gender Chart to predict baby’s sex while you wait for the official ultrasound or prenatal testing results.

How To Calculate Your Due Date

How To Calculate Your Due Date by LMP, Week 6-1
  • Pregnancy Calendar: How Many Weeks Pregnant Are You?
  • There are two ways to calculate your due date. The first is by counting from the first day of your last period. This method is most accurate if you have a regular menstrual cycle and you know the exact date of your last period. However, if your cycle is irregular, or youre not sure of the date of your last period, you can use the second method: an ultrasound.

An ultrasound can accurately pinpoint the date of conception, and from there, your healthcare provider can calculate your due date. However, regardless of which method you use, its important to remember that due dates are only an estimate. Most babies are born between 38 and 42 weeks, so even if your due date is calculated to be earlier or later than that, theres a good chance your baby will arrive around the same time as most other babies.

    • IVF day 3 transfer: If your embryo was transferred to your uterus after three days of embryo growth, this method calculates your estimated due date based on 263 days from your date of transfer.
    • IVF day 5 transfer: If your embryo was transferred to your uterus after five days of embryo growth, this method calculates your estimated due date based on 261 days from your date of transfer.

What Happens During A Pregnancy Ultrasound

    During a transvaginal ultrasound:

  • You’ll empty your bladder and undress from the waist down .
  • You’ll lie on your back with your feet in stirrups .
  • The transducer transmits sound waves, and a computer translates the resulting echoes into pictures on a video monitor, making your baby appear on the screen before your eyes. Bone is white, fluid is black, and soft-tissue organs appear as shades of gray.
  • The sonographer records pertinent information and takes pictures or video for your provider to interpret. You can watch the process on the screen, if you like. Your provider will discuss the results with you.
  • During a transabdominal ultrasound:

  • You’ll lie on your back on an examination table with your abdomen exposed.
  • An assistant will put gel over your belly to help the sound waves move more easily.
  • The sonographer slides the transducer back and forth over your stomach. The transducer transmits sound waves, and a computer translates the resulting echoes into pictures on a video monitor, making your baby appear on the screen before your eyes. Bone is white, fluid is black, and soft tissue organs appear as shades of gray.
  • The sonographer will record your baby’s measurements and take still pictures or video for your provider to interpret. You can watch the process on the screen, if you like. Your provider will discuss the results with you. Ask whether you can get pictures to take home, either printed out or on a disc.

How To Calculate A Menstrual Cycle And Menstrual Period

The menstrual cycle begins on the first day of your period. In other words, day one of the cycle is the day one of your period, cycle day two is the second day of your period and so on. In general, bleeding is there for three to five days and differs from one woman to another.

An important point to note is that the cycle begins from the day of your regular bleeding but not spotting. For instance, you started spotting on March 3, but the actual bleeding began a day later. So the first day of your menstrual cycle is March 4. Letâs say you bleed for five days, so, the duration of your menstrual period is five days for the month of March.

Now, if your next period started on April 2, then your menstrual cycle length is the number of days from March 4 to April 1 , which is 29 days. You should not count the first day of your next period because that day will fall under the next menstrual cycle.

In general, menstrual period is the number of days you bleed regularly and menstrual cycle is the number of days from first day of your last period to a day before your next period starts. The average length of the menstrual cycle is 28 days but varies from person to person.

When Do You Get Your First Ultrasound

Why NFP Matters for Your Birth

More and more doctors have ultrasound equipment in their office and are doing ultrasounds for their patients during the first trimester as early as 6 to 10 weeks. When you call your healthcare provider to schedule your first prenatal appointment, ask whether you’ll be having an ultrasound. Your provider may want you to have an early ultrasound if you’ve had a previous pregnancy complication, such as a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy.

Transvaginal ultrasound also makes it easier to diagnose early pregnancy problems, such as a miscarriage or a molar or ectopic pregnancy.

Not all women have a first-trimester ultrasound. It’s standard to have just one ultrasound during pregnancy a mid-pregnancy transabdominal ultrasound between 18 and 22 weeks. This is sometimes called an anatomy ultrasound, because it evaluates your baby’s anatomy. You can also find out your baby’s sex at the mid-pregnancy ultrasound if you want .

    Calculating A Due Date

A typical pregnancy lasts, on average, 280 days, or 40 weeksstarting with the first day of the last normal menstrual period as day 1. An estimated due date can be calculated by following steps 1 through 3:

  • First, determine the first day of your last menstrual period.

  • Next, count back 3 calendar months from that date.

  • Lastly, add 1 year and 7 days to that date.

  • For example: Your last menstrual period began on September 9, 2010. Counting back 3 calendar months would be June 9, 2010. Adding 1 year and 7 days would bring you to June 16, 2011, as your estimated due date.

This 3-step method is referred to as Naegele’s Rule and is based on a normal 28-day menstrual cycle. Therefore, dates may have to be adjusted for longer or shorter menstrual cycles.

You may also estimate your delivery date by using the steps 1 and 2 and the chart:

  • First, locate the first day of your last menstrual period .

  • Next, note the date directly below. This is your estimated date of delivery .

  • Is It Possible For My Due Date To Change

Typically, an ultrasound is used to confirm your due date , and once a due date has been selected, it does not change no matter how many additional ultrasound exams you may have during your pregnancy, states ACOG.

Still, ACOG also notes that subsequent changes to the EDD should be reserved for rare circumstances, discussed with the patient and documented clearly in the medical record. A pregnancy without an ultrasound examination that confirms or revises the EDD before 22 0/7 weeks of gestational age should be considered suboptimally dated.

How Do I Use A Home Pregnancy Test

For best results when using a home pregnancy test:

    • Make sure the test is current. Check the expiration date on the package, especially if you’ve had it for a while. If you’ve been storing the test anywhere that gets moist or warm, like the bathroom, it may have deteriorated. If that’s the case, it’s better to throw it away and get a new one.
    • Test first thing in the morning. Your urine is most concentrated when you first get up, so hCG levels will be easier to detect at that time.
    • Read the directions carefully. Directions vary with different brands. Some require you to urinate in a cup and then use the dropper provided to place a small sample in the testing well. With others, you can pee directly onto the testing device. And some let you do either.

The tests also vary in how they display the results. For example, some show pink or blue lines on the test strip, while others reveal a red plus or minus sign in a window. “Digital” tests tell you in words whether you’re pregnant. Most have a control indicator to indicate whether the test is valid.

It may take up to 10 minutes to see results. If the control indicator doesn’t show up properly, the test may be faulty. If this happens, you can usually call the manufacturer and have them send you a new one .

If you have questions about how to use a test, call the manufacturer’s toll-free number on the package instructions.

What If I Have Irregular Periods Or Long Cycles

How to Calculate Pregnancy Due Date, Pregnancy Calculator by Last Period

Some women have cycles that are consistently longer than the average 28-day cycle. In these cases, a pregnancy wheel can still be used, but some simple calculations are necessary.

The second half of a womans menstrual cycle always lasts for 14 days. This is the time from ovulation to the next menstrual period. If your cycle is 35 days long, for example, then you probably ovulated on day 21.

Once you have a general idea of when you ovulated, you can use an adjusted LMP to find your due date with a pregnancy wheel.

For example, if your menstrual cycle is usually 35 days long and the first day of your LMP was November 1:

  • Subtract 14 days to find your adjusted LMP date .
  • After you calculate your adjusted LMP date, simply mark it on the pregnancy wheel and then look at the date where the line crosses. That is your estimated due date.

Some pregnancy wheels may allow you to enter the date of conception which occurs within 72 hours of ovulation instead of the date of your LMP.

Why Is The Calculated Due Date Important At All

With the calculated key date, you know in which week of pregnancy you are, how your child is developing in the womb and which examinations are on your preventive care plan and when. The expected delivery date is not only important for you and your baby, but also important for your employer . So that he can plan, you should let him know the expected date of the birth as soon as possible. However, this date is not yet binding for maternity leave which begins six weeks before the calculated date of birth. Your gynecologist only issues the official certificate shortly before the start of maternity leave . The health insurance company and the employer then receive this certificate.Incidentally, this is the date for the start of the protection period even if a caesarean section is planned well before that. If, for example, maternity leave is shortened by two weeks before the expected birth, that is no cause for alarm. The lost time is simply added to the end.
